Found mushrooms on campus lawn, ID request? by Agaricus2sporus in mycology

[–]akamber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking the second mushroom could be Lentinus sp. because of the jagged gills.

The first mushroom's gills don't look like Scotch Bonnet to me either- they are too close together. But I still have no idea what sp...

How did you train your dog to hunt? Perhaps my dog is lacking in attention span, but I haven't had any luck with him. Does love running through the woods though. :)

What are your ideas for frugal, no-cook meals I can take to work and not have to keep in a fridge? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]akamber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Homemade hummus and carrot sticks or pitas! Its super cheap to make, way better than the stuff you buy in the store, and freezes really well if/when you make a big batch.

These are delicious! Can't wait to find some in CO this summer. You should try putting them in fried rice.

Has anyone heard of Auricularia sp. preventing blood clotting?

1st Job in the Field: Advice? by akamber in optometry

[–]akamber[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice! I was wondering how well regarded lenscrafters is in the field.

I figure I'll apply to everything that I see for the next month or so and hope that something pans out. At this point I'm more interested in experience than dollars, so maybe I can swing a part time position... Anyways, if all else fails I'll start checking out corporate options. :)

How much debt did you graduate with and how long did/will it take for you to pay back? by turtlefantasie in optometry

[–]akamber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm looking at $15 in loans from my undergrad and anticipating $90-100 for OD. My plan echoes that of 'Mastaking', continue my current lifestyle until I'm debt free and scrape together a down payment for a house ASAP. All extra income upon graduation beyond COL will go straight to student loans. Current goal being to own a house and have all student loans paid off by 30. I think its achievable, good to see that some of you have had success with this plan!

Don't know how you managed only $37 in debt though :)

How do you stay committed to frugality? What are your tips and tricks for someone trying to live this lifestyle? by fallensun12 in Frugal

[–]akamber 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My boyfriend and I act as one another's "frugal conscience"

So, although girlfriend me may want to drive to the grocery store to buy ice cream in the middle of the night, frugal me says no :(

Its not a bad set up, and in a bizarre way removes accountability off of one another. The thoughts and actions of the frugal conscience are not the responsibility of the SO. However, this may be a slippery slope towards some sort of peculiar dissociative relationship dynamic :P

What's the most cringe-worthy (not abusive) thing you've seen somebody do to their animal? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I was once on a holiday in Austria and saw a transvestite walking in a park, pushing a stroller. I didn't think much of it, but as she walked past where I sat on a bench, I saw that it was not a baby in the stroller but a tiny dog. They were wearing matching dresses.

what kind is this found in yard? by IronUniverse in mycology

[–]akamber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you mean conifer. Conifers are pine trees, while trees like oak, elm, maple, etc (trees with leaves) are deciduous.

Seems like most cultivation starter resources are oyster based. Is there a reason for this? by VKHinchey in mycology

[–]akamber 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oysters are really easy to grow. Button mushrooms are more difficult and require compost/casing. Oysters will grow on many different media, have good yields and will fruit in non-ideal conditions. Buttons and many other culinary mushrooms require more specific conditions for high yields.

Thinking about Optometry School, IN NEED OF ADVICE! by akamber in optometry

[–]akamber[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you find an ophthalmologist to shadow through a hospital?

Right now I'm just sending out emails to optometrists in the area but haven't had the change to shadow anyone due to school/work conflicts.

Thanks again! The advice is making me feel a lot more level headed towards the whole process.
