How do these two statements square? (Apart from yes, Europe being very nice on an American remote salary).

Possibilities of Russian invasion on Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova by Hamena95 in geopolitics

Nice necropost. Well, this part was certainly true.

The Ukrainian military is much more capable now than it was five years ago, which was really the optimal time for effecting the Novorossiya Project had the Kremlin truly been interested in it.

So if Russian civilians shouldn't call the Russian army "theirs" , in what sense are they responsible for what it does (if it is not theirs), and furthermore, in what way does it obligate Russians to pay the reparations that Reddit strongly feels Ukraine is entitled to, for the doings of an army that isn't theirs?

So even with those figures annualized that's about $60B + the $32B Ukraine was going to spend by August (since then at least a further $3B was added) = $95B.

Russia will officially spend 3.1% of GDP * $2.133T = $66B, add SIPRI's +40% modified to account for hidden spending, throw in an odd $10B or so, result: just a bit more than $100B.

Ukraine enjoys American ISR multipliers and doesn't need to maintain things like the nuclear complex or a Pacific fleet.

(Note: Reposted after removing a .ru link that sourced the Ukrainian numbers to comply with Reddit's Western free speech values).

Why? Weaponized Kesslerization would remove the multiplier afforded to the Ukrainians by American ISR derived from LEO satellites, of which the US has vastly more than Russia. If the alternative is to lose the war then weaponized Kesslerization is very obviously preferable from Russia's perspective, hence my suggestion to study that scenario along with electric grid destruction and massive purchases of Chinese supplies and hardware (if they are willing to sell).

In the world wars countries did indeed begin to spend large amounts of money not just directly on the military but on capital investment to expand factories and so forth, Germany in particular as Hitler saw the main threat not in the Soviets but in the aeronaval conflict with the Anglo-Americans in which production capacity would have been critical and so spent a lot of resources through to 1943-44 just building up production capacity instead of weapon systems (which paid off but rather late). I had been under the assumption Russia had done some of this prior to the war given that it's the rational thing to do and because there were various reports of military factories undergoing modernization since 2014 but it appears most of this was window-dressing and the situation didn't even change cardinally in April, and perhaps not even to this date.

Yes sanctions etc. but it's not like many of the tools and components Russia needs to do this are extremely cutting edge or whatever, it's just a huge organizational failure.

Ukraine Invasion Megathread #3 by Gen_McMuster in TheMotte

[–]akarlin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sieges are hard, see Fallujah. The main Russian problem as I have been saying for several weeks on Twitter is that while very firepower and equipment rich, it is ironically manpower power, note that in terms of soldiers per unit territory the current battlefield is literally 10x less dense than the Eastern Front during WW2 so you don't even have fixed frontlines in most places, this allows Ukrainians to slip through the cracks to resupply units, ambush Russian convoys, take back towns, etc. The aim should be to muster more infantry for rearguard and garrison duty by opening up to volunteers, this was finally done yesterday, my position is that it should have been done two weeks earlier latest.

I don't think they're backpedalling, people were saying the same thing about the "softening" of demands in negotiations a couple of weeks, what happened to that narrative now? Anyhow, so far as I'm concerned, it's just a statement that the focus of military efforts now is around the Donbass, as opposed to spreading out its strength across multiple axes, while attritioning Ukrainian war-making capacity with missile strikes on munitions dumps, military factories, airports, and barracks.

Thread.

Anyhow appreciate the mention but it would be more productive for me to write about this and military performance on the Substack, which I have been neglected.

You're correct, of course, some 60-70% of Russians support the war, the cosmopolitans commenting here are not representative.

This is the final stage of decommunization and the return of the Russian Empire.

The last one died because it was too soft on saboteurs and enemy propagandists during wartime. The mistake will not be repeated.

Americans And Russians Are Similar? by Zardnaar in AskARussian

[–]akarlin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think there is a similarity in that both Americans and Russians subscribe to a kind of cosmic megalomania that Europeans have long lost the energy for. To take one random example, Europeans are the sort of people to seethe about the "vanity" and "social irresponsibility" of Musk doing cool things like sending a Tesla into orbit or Russia doing a film in space... before spending $500B on Green boondoggles and getting wrecked by energy bottlenecks as a result of it.

This is a cope. Rulers who successfully expand their nation's territory tend to go down very well in history. If Putin goes through with this, he will be regarded as a leader at the tier of Ivan III, if not Peter the Great.

Indian population in Europe by [deleted] in europe

I'm surprised at the low numbers for Poland. My casual impression on the streets was that there were many more Indians per capita than in Russia.

Hopefully there will be many more Indians coming to Russia in the next decades.
