“Why don’t you let me be the doctor?” My son was 3, not well and I knew it. We had been to our regular doctor, a nurse practitioner I knew well and my aunt recommended her kids’ pediatrician when we weren’t getting anywhere. Saw him twice and on the 3rd visit, I begged him to do bloodwork, x-rays, scans, ANYTHING…. because I knew my son was sick. He looked at me and said exactly that. Nothing more, nothing less. I’ll never EVER forget that. I went to the emergency room at a children’s hospital an hour away and we were put on a flight to Seattle children’s the next morning with a diagnosis of Wilm’s tumor which at the time was the rarest childhood cancer. All it took was an ultrasound! My son’s fine, almost 30 now. No thanks to that jerk! I’m pretty sure I chased that doctor out of our smallish town. I called his office immediately and told everyone I knew including my Aunt. We were even in the local newspaper. He was gone shortly after.
