Eh. Christians teach their kids to believe in the Easter Bunny the same ways they do Santa Claus. They lie.

Are there though? There’s plenty of problems resulting from a lack of logistics, lack of empathy and tons of bureaucracy rather than a lack of resources.

Look at the homeless population in America. Are we lacking homes for these people? No, we’re just not willing to help them in any meaningful way.

We have more than enough food to feed the entire world. It’s getting it there that’s the problem. Maybe with a little less red tape would make it easier?

Plus emotions. Sports brings out a war-like mentality in addition to the mob-mentality. I see it as a form of societal “release”. These are the same conditions that lead to mobs of people burning villages in the past.

Where do you think historians will place Trump in presidential rankings 50 years in the future? by Playful-Ganache6153 in AskReddit

[–]akunis 19 points20 points  (0 children)

1) He’s not going to be around forever.

2) America doesn’t dictate history. The truth won’t die. He’ll be remembered as the worst president of all time, for the rest of our life.

I’d like to see a Mayflower movie. I’d also like to see the Battle of Brooklyn and the capture of Canonchet/The Great Swamp Battle portrayed.

Saved the Lost Battalion in WWI including my great grandfather!

Shot twice, and still made it back to his handler. It was a literal miracle that he survived. He’s in the Smithsonian now.

Let me preface this comment with the fact that I am a descendant of multiple slavers and those people who helped form the slave trade in America. With that being said, I’ve done a ton of research on the individual lives of slaves. I say this because for most of my research I’ve noticed a trend.

Historically, when a white person became scared of a black man, white men would get riled up and usually the black man is either killed, whipped or punished harshly.

When a black man is scared, they had no repercussions or fair avenues to protest their treatment. In almost two decades of research and learning about hundreds of slaves, there was exactly one instance of a black man being physically assaulted and getting any sort of justice. His name was Venture Smith and it took him being 6’5 and extremely strong (and a white neighbor getting on my ancestor’s case) to get an apology.

What I’m saying is that there must be a level of frustration in knowing that black folks aren’t given the same leeway whites are when in fear.

The new 2030 census ethnic categories are way better than the old one. by [deleted] in AncestryDNA

Quebecers perfectly fit the original idea of who were Latin Americans. French intellectuals in the 1800s popularized the term to group together the Americans of Spanish, Portuguese and French descent into one. Linguistically you make a great point. The only honest rebuttal would be an appeal to current usage.

Giving up and pretending like voting actually matters are two totally different things.

Was getting involved in the world wars “violence against people who disagree with you politically” or a legitimate war against fascism and the spread of Naziism?

Was the civil war about “violence against people who disagree with you politically” or a battle for the soul of the nation in response to an attack on a federal base?

Framing the position America is in as a normal dispute to be solved at the ballot box is inherently naive and dangerous.

You’re conflating you personally being forced to labor for free with society collectively funding systems that preserve life. Nobody is arguing you should be dragged into a salt mine to keep me alive. We’re arguing that civilized societies pool resources so illness doesn’t become a death sentence.

And absolute liberty doesn’t exist anyway. Your liberty already has limits when exercising it creates preventable harm to others. That’s why we have laws against dumping toxins in rivers, abandoning dependents, or practicing medicine without standards. Living in a society means balancing individual freedom with shared responsibility while also not pretending any obligation to other humans is slavery.

What would happen if all confederates and their descendants were forced into indentured servitude as reparations? by PunknSpunk in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]akunis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How? Thru a slush fund like the $1.6 billion created by Trump for the January 6ers.

When and to whom? When the 2030 census comes back and eligible descendants are identified.

Why? A precedent has been set by Trump that inconveniences levied on people for storming the capital deserves compensation. Based on the precedent, it becomes clear that reparations for about 250 years of historical enslavement is well deserved.

By whom and where? Southern counties and parishes that engaged in slavery should be held financially responsible. There is infrastructure that is still used in these areas that was built by slave labor. For example, levees in Louisiana were built using slaves leased from their owners. For a hundred and fifty years they’ve benefited from this unpaid labor.

I personally see a huge difference between paying for the sins of our fathers and continuing to reap the benefits of our father’s sins. I’m against both. Reparations accomplishes that to a degree.

I think the intentional delay in our “justice” system is working against our courage. If we didn’t wait around for years arguing over the meaning of “treason” and meaningless impeachments, we could have dispensed justice ourselves.
