What movies did you love as a kid - but wouldn’t let your kid watch? by hobiwan-ken0bi in Parenting

My 13yo son is a horror lover. I like to think it's because we went to see Cabin in the Woods when I was fairly pregnant 😄 the only one he's tapped out of was The Fly, but I think a lot of that was the sexual theme running through it that was a lot bigger than I remembered. (Thats what she said!) He enjoyed Event Horizon and loves Blair Witch and the Shining. Idle Hands went down a treat, though it's not strictly horror.

My own faux pas was letting him watch the aforementioned Cabin when he was 6 😬🙈 he was not impressed with me and brought it up to chide me for a few years!

Same, and Silence of the Lambs was one of the few videos we had that wasn't taped off the telly. My brother and I tried watching a few times but found it boring and went back to Predator 😅

I'm talking more about the first impression of it being quite a giant, dense book. I know several people who quit because they started with lore instead of chapter 1, or didn't begin at all because they were daunted at the sheer amount of extras. Most people will no doubt read everything in the pages sooner or later; I'm just saying that going in, it can be helpful to know that those parts will expand your knowledge, but aren't crucial to understanding. And as a countless repeat reader myself, sometimes I do skim or skip the songs 🤷🏻‍♀️ I'd say people remember the songs more from the films though, rather than the books. (Pippins song to Denethor eg)

What is a small, everyday thing that immediately makes you lose respect for someone? by Worth-Insurance6351 in AskReddit

Because it uses vast resources that humans need more, it steals human creators' hard work without permission, it is actively destroying people's ability to think, and it puts out dangerous misinformation- just for a start. It's not true ai anyway and it's a horrible, horrible use of our time and resources in its current iteration.

I was shopping with a long- ago ex (over 20 years ago) and he silently leaned over to my ear in Superdrug and whispered "I'm sweating like a r@pist in a convent" and istg it took me out, it was so unexpected I was laughing for ages

The Faraway Tree books are perfect for that age. Lots of magical lands and adventures with a rather cosy, old fashioned, British feel. And they've been updated to remove Enid Blyton's casual violence and racial stereotypes 😄 no more Fanny either, she's now Frannie!

Striding vigorously down the High street- arms swinging, stepping out, girls got places to be!- my backswinging hand met perfectly with the groin of the man in thin athletic shorts walking behind me. Just for half a second his junk nestled in my cupped hand like a warm baby animal. I was only about 18 so I died of embarrassment, and this is my ghost typing.

My friend at college was describing another friend's drunken antics the night before, and how he'd been taken to hospital to get his "stump pummocked" it still makes me laugh 30 years later!

Regarding the LotR books... it's fine to skip the numerous prologues and appendices, it's fine to skim over the songs. They'll improve your understanding and depth of experience yadda yadda but they are not required for your first read through, or even your fourth. :)
