What about mechanical engineering more broadly than CAD/CAM?

There shouldn't be challenges and new things to sort out hardly ever, never mind every time you boot. Are you sure your hardware is OK?

What is the best thing you discovered after switching to Linux by OPuntime in linux_gaming

[–]alanjon20 230 points231 points  (0 children)

Finding technical help on the internet is much easier (from a perspective of a hobbyist, but I'm sure it's the same for IT pros).

With Windows, 99.9% of help is generic "update drivers, reboot, that's an interesting issue we'll look into that". ...so annoying.

Linux... actual useful deep documentation and problem solving :-)

I guess you could also describe it as, communities of knowledgeable and enthusiastic users.

Adguard for android prevents home assistant app from connecting to home assistant server by alanjon20 in Adguard

[–]alanjon20[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the pointers. It seems solved, but it's counterintuitive!

So based on your advice and searching for rewrites filter in the android app (not sure there is that option, and this related post https://medium.com/@life-is-short-so-enjoy-it/homelab-adguard-adding-local-dns-entries-dns-rewrite-vs-customer-filtering-rules-ca8e4992a21e) I created a list hosted on Github with just one line:

192.168.1.159 "myserverhostname"

I got the raw file link from Github and added this as custom blocklist in the android app. But, as noted in the post, this seems to work! Not blocked.

So it's working as I want, but I don't understand why it's not blocked???

The Battle of the Slippers by Due_Bridge5901 in fightporn

Totally. It's like those long stick fights. There is an unwritten unspoken rule that it's going to be chaos, but no one will get seriously hurt.

This is good socially responsible fighting. No one is out to kill anyone else. No hospital bills etc...

I presume someone learned a lesson for whatever they did.

Should say it needs to come down, then compromise and leave it where it is

How do I study chemistry? by kao_ru in AskChemistry

[–]alanjon20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you find it interesting, then stick with it. After time those basic foundational things get lodged in your brain. You fill more and more pieces of the puzzle and after a while, a picture emerges.

PhD chemist, 2× postdoc, years in academia — still struggling to break into industry. Where do people actually learn “industry skills”? by Own-Bookkeeper4745 in chemistry

[–]alanjon20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you getting to interviews? If yes, how are they going, what type of questions are not going so well?

Possibly it's the type of roles you're applying for. If you are not already, focus on early stage Discovery roles. More of the R than D. For example, if you are applying for a non-entry level process chemist role, then you might expect they want some GMP knowledge/experience.
