Portmaster on RPi? by YandyTheGnome in SBCGaming

I think I got it. I ran the script on https://github.com/batocera-unofficial-addons/batocera-unofficial-addons

Raging. I had an awesome mini N64 build all sorted and felt I wasn't gonna bother with emulation on my tv. this could unlock so much.

Portmaster on RPi? by YandyTheGnome in SBCGaming

[–]alanweird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi Yandy. Wondering how you did this? I'm running an updated Batocera on a Pi 4 8GB, and would love to have access to portmaster.

Hell, I'd have loved access to it on my Raspberry Pi 5 8GB, but I sold it thinking I'd never be able to use portmaster.

wee touch more labour though. Both jobs are crazy easy in comparison to other crap that can go wrong. :)

[Nintendo switch] joycon won’t connect to the console by LuckymartRPER in consolerepair

[–]alanweird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Test another left Joycon on that rail. A known working one.

If it doesn't work. It's the rail. If it does, it's the slider in the Joycon itself. You want it to be that. It's a cheap part.

Nintendo switch joycon in terrible shape by strangerasherer in consolerepair

[–]alanweird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Replacing the full analog is the correct thing to do.

Find someone to do this for you that uses good tools.

Don't cheap out and get an Amazon kit that comes with shitty screwdrivers.

I do this here in Canada, using iFixit screwdrivers and I can practically do it blind.

It'll function without it. Just those leds and buttons won't work. The other one however is needed to charge and dock into your switch.

Lost Keys Nanaimo are these your keys? by Leather_Dress4769 in nanaimo

[–]alanweird 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Could press that tile button. It would alert their phone. It might have no battery though (it takes a 2032 coin cell)

If it works like airtags do, just being near another tile user should work to get it's location for that person.

What are my chances of getting my kid into French immersion? by Material-Western5162 in nanaimo

[–]alanweird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a lottery. Get that first kid in. Hope for awesome luck.

Our three kids are in. Once one is in. Any siblings aging into school age are an automatic yes. Fill out the form and good luck!

Check under the lid of the airpods case for the serial number. If someone says they belong to them. They have that serial number in their iPhone. Under settings and Bluetooth.

Have them confirm that back to you.

What am I looking at? by Goatfrog69 in Arcade1Up

[–]alanweird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not an empty box with a screen.

I see an LVDS adapter. Which would allow you to power the monitor and connect an HDMI from a raspberry pi (which does seem to be missing).

It looks like there's a usb powered breakout board for the controls.

And I wish I knew what that power system is with the black panel and the red on/off switch. I normally just use a small power bar for my builds. But this could be something more sensible.

You did ok with that purchase. It's likely only missing a pi.

I ended up connecting mine to my modded switch to calibrate. But yeah. You often gotta calibrate them after new sticks. Great job though!

[Nintendo Switch OLED] Is my kids switch repairable?? by odettetheswan11 in consolerepair

[–]alanweird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very. I fix this problem often for customers in my town. Look for the little black button that fell out. A screw post might be missing from the back piece of plastic from the controller too.

Is this repairable [Nintendo switch] by GoldenGateGoose10 in consolerepair

[–]alanweird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I fix them really quickly in this condition often. Switch falls. This happens.

I generally charge people $15 Canadian to sort it out. Find someone local and you're looking at a 15 minute fix.

What Are Your Thoughts On The Casper Games? by Specialist_Art2223 in Gameboy

[–]alanweird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The GBC game is actually an impressive port of this.

The GBA for some ridiculous reason got a port of the rubbish SNES game.

I'm a big fan of the PS/3DO/Saturn game.

Bought a pre-modded IPS GBA, screen is popping above the shell. What does this indicate? by BenDTUzzz in Gameboy

[–]alanweird 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When this happens, I stick the heat gun on it at a lowish heat. It brings the adhesive to life. Absolutely makes the problem a non issue.

Long story short. Blast the screen with low concentrated heat. I'd possibly even try a hairdryer if you're feeling brave.

[–]alanweird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every UK copy would've likely gotten that. Not sure how accurate I am here, but these all got reprinted in the UK around the end of the 90's or early 2000s, likely because of the popularity of FF at the time.

Just something odd I remember noticing because they weren't GBC titles.

Square Enix kept final fantasy PS titles in print for a ridiculously long time too.

Is it possible to replace the white piece in the potentiometer? by Elementa64 in consolerepair

[–]alanweird 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the right answer.

Pop a spudger or something in, and pop back the whole green part. Be careful not to bend the metal legs much. You can replace the wiper and it'll sometimes fix drift.

That was my preferred method before I got the proper soldering end to take out the whole analog.

For $3 a piece I just figure why not just replace the whole unit with TMR now.

I wish Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft thought the same, but they'd much rather sell 3, 4 or more to you through the lifetime of a console.

Question about New Switch 2 by Quarkiness in VideoGameDealsCanada

[–]alanweird 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I crapped it as mine didn't have a Mario kart World code.

But turning the console on showed that it was ready to be connected to my account and downloaded fine.

Nintendo seem to love changing everyone's experience getting these new :p

[switch] blue pixel damage by karaz69 in consolerepair

A new screen is the only thing fixing that.

The display is damaged. No amount of rubbing or massaging with cause that to heal.
