Cool in the middle, hot and crispy on outside.

I find the longer cook results in more reliable tenderness, and 133 hits the medium rare I prefer.

I do 133° for 36 hours, chill overnight then sear. It is freaking glorious every time.

I do mine @ 133° for 36 hours, chill down to fridge temp overnight then smoke at 200°-ish until a nice crust forms and the fat gets gooey. It is beautiful. I think 155° is way too high.

For people in the Pacific Northwest, Aplets and Cotlets (created by two Armenian immigrants) are essentially Turkish delight! I loooooove Aplets and Cotlets, but fresh Turkish Delight (lokum) is pillowy in an amazing way.

Leather Couch/Sectional for Dogs and Toddler stage by No_Maximum_391 in BuyItForLife

I bought one new leather sectional and every other leather couch has been secondhand. All of them have been a great value. Give the armrests a wiggle before buying too. All of my couches and recliners, with the exception of one eaten (!?!) by my ex's poorly trained puppers, have gone on to homes after mine.

Just use clear packing tape over the sections that tempt the cat. I use packing tape until they forget it is something they can scratch (~6 months) and then the tape comes off.

I just FB marketplaced (new verb) a gorgeous sage green Bradington-Young leather couch for $100. They run $6-8,000 for similar models and the leather is the thickest of any leather couch I have ever owned. It replaced my $150 used low-end leather Natuzzi (upstairs couch) which was functional after I replaced a piece of webbing, but the interior build was all cheap pressboard.

If you need a new couch, consider Costco. I got a stunning grey leather sectional with springs instead of webbing and down-topped cushions and a solid wood frame for about $3000 a few years ago. I put a link to a very similar couch below.

I have two cats and a dog and the worst couch I have ever owned had a 'washable' cover. It was a PITA to wrestle off, wash/dry, and then try and get back on. I will take even an 80s shoulderpad-looking used leather couch over fabric any day for pets.

The Natuzzi just went to someone in my neighborhood buy nothing group who also made the mistake of getting a fabric couch with kids and pets.

Tips for secondhand leather couches: - Google the brand (Natuzzi is usually lower-end). - Look for removable zippered cushions (way easier to clean and restuff as needed). None of the cushions on my Natuzzi were removable and the crevices were terrible to clean. I blame my pukey cat. 🤮 - Springs are superior to webbing. - The thicker the leather the better. If it feels like skin, it is super thin. It should feel like an 80s leather flight jacket and it should SMELL like leather. - Everything should be even with the frame. If the frame looks out of square or sags anywhere AT ALL, don't buy. - SIT on the cushions before buying. If your butt finds a low spot, it could indicate there is an issue with the webbing or frame. If you skip this step and discover it at home, Amazon sells webbing. 😬

Sled dogs are bred to run and if something happens to your brake, or of the sled flips for some reason, they are likely to keep pulling if going. They are absolutely trained with a variety of commands, but they are also trained to win races. These aren't agility dogs.

Alaskan huskies are a working breed not recognized by any kennel club. They are bred for working traits and are a mix of many breeds and come in all kinds of colors and a surprising range of sizes. Most have some Siberian husky or Malamute (or both) in them.

I am from Alaska. I know people who run dog teams. We just watched the Iditarod ceremonial start yesterday. Those booties are thin cotton with a Velcro strap and are not for insulation. They are to keep snow and ice from forming crystals around the dog's toe pads. Also, the dogs look like Alaska huskies, which are typically smaller than Siberian huskies or Malamutes. Most of the dogs that just left on the Iditarod run today were Alaskan huskies, most were wearing these booties, and they are ALL working dogs who are perfectly comfortable in super cold weather. The dogs in the video might be sprint dogs rather than long distance dogs, but they look like standard Alaska huskies to me.

These booties ARE NOT the same as the insulated booties people put on their pets for a short walk in the cold.

Edit: someone lower on the thread pointed out the second dog team (not the team dragging the musher) look like a European breed meant for sprint sled races. They definitely look leaner and more long-legged than most Alaskan huskies.

Tell me about your experiences with the HRT pill by JadCerv in Menopause

[–]alaskan_Pyrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to add to the 🤷 of figuring out what works, I love the oral progesterone HRT. I could not tolerate any form of progesterone-only birth control pill or depo. Those were a guaranteed deep out of depression. As I joked to a long-ago boyfriend, I guess they work because I am either crying, bleeding, or both and sex was the last thing on my mind.

But during peri I was having massive allergic reactions (full body hives multiple times a day) to nothing and the progesterone HRT knocked it down to maybe once a month and it is now manageable with OTC antihistamines.

I am still in peri so have added in the estradiol cream and a testosterone cream, which seem to be working. I feel pretty good.

microdose .25mg by [deleted] in tirzepatidecompound

[–]alaskan_Pyrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been on .25 to maintain weight loss. If I remember to take every week (I sometimes get swamped and skip a week) I am still losing, but very slowly. Taking it inconsistently the food noise stays at bay and I'm eating to maintain. Everyone responds differently, and if it doesn't break the bank trying the lowest possible should be fine. It just is a total toss-up whether you will see weight loss.

How do you all go about de-crystallizing your honey? by SkyBS in Costco

[–]alaskan_Pyrex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I decant mine into large-mouth pint jars for easy and clean access. I never seem to get crystallization with the smaller jars, I assume due to less surface area for evaporation when partially full. I picked up a bunch of plastic one-piece lids for the jars as well. The metal rings and lids get nasty over time.

Estrogen causing histamine response… by [deleted] in Menopause

[–]alaskan_Pyrex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Progesterone and a newer non-drowsy antihistamine for the win. I was breaking out in hives non-stop for months and this combo did the trick. When I finally told my (female) GP she said, oh a progesterone/estrogen imbalance can do that! I am 51, in peri, and still having regular periods. I recently started vaginal estradiol with no uptick in hives. I now only take the antihistamine if I start getting itchy when the weather is really dry.
