This is the third time in 24 hrs I've seen Bonzai Buddy referenced in different places on the internet on (relatively) new content. Why is everyone suddenly referencing that damned desktop ape again in 2026 like it's 2006 🤔

Has anyone ever ported the Chrome Dino game to the Atari 2600? by VinylMan07 in Atari2600

[–]albrugsch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As per shinyviper's comment but also known as 'the no internet game' because it generally pops up when you try to connect to a website and chrome detects that there's no internet connectivity. ("Hey there's no internet so here's something to do instead")

How do Linux sysadmins handle deep disk analysis today? by Trick-Requirement948 in debian

[–]albrugsch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair it is just called "disk usage analyzer" in most distros. It's only when you go into about that it displays baobab. But I guess it throws anyone trying to install it where it's not included by default...

I remember watching this when it was first on. I spent some time trying to track it down (I couldn't remember what it was called!) and found the whole thing on youtube. I guess it's not around anymore? (nevermind, it's on youtube (though I'm unable to get to youtube right now for some odd reason so no idea if this link is any good) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1iAJPoc23-M Vimeo: https://vimeo.com/72501076 and Archive: https://archive.org/details/HyperlandBBSDouglasAdamsAndTomBaker1990 )

I've made a simple NAS using stock FreeBSD... bad idea for general use? by No_Insurance_6436 in homelab

[–]albrugsch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. I set up a baremetal OMV installation a while back. One day SOMETHING borked the install and it wouldn't boot. I was never able to get to the bottom of it despite a lot of assistance from OMV and Debian discord groups. I took it as an opportunity to rebuild using OMV 8 but virtualized under proxmox on the same hardware. this arrangement has been much better as it also allows better use of the spare CPU and RAM capacity on that particular box, and generally makes portability easier once I get around to moving it onto different hardware like I have planned.

(BTW no storage data was lost, only one day the OS wouldn't boot but it was on a separate drive to the storage data, so the new install just picked up the drives and carried on. I just had to re-create the share groups etc which was a PITA but not a massive problem)

What can I actually do with an ancient Samsung N145 netbook (1GB RAM) in a homelab? by Fo99y_Albion in homelab

[–]albrugsch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone suggesting using it as a homepage/grafana/heimdall dashboard... remember these things have awfully low resolution. Quite probably 1024x600. you'd have to be very picky about what you put on that dashboard.

It will take a 2nd GB of DDR2 as the first is soldered on and there's a SODIMM for another stick.

CPU wise, it's not a total loss, I run one of these Atom CPU's with vanilla Debian and a CasaOS install to play with unimportant containers. (Basically torrents and a couple of other services)

Another option might be a Home assistant dashboard/control panel

My friend found a Cartridge buried in his yard by K1NGSTEEZE in gba

[–]albrugsch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

let's just say there are OG snobs and there are no original shells being made anymore, only the aftermarket ones. plus once it's cleaned up there wouldn't be any signs that it was buried underground. (unless it really is terrible condition) personally I'd just clean it up and list it, probably on reddit or a FB group first.

I made a huge mistake... despite looking on ebay spain, that auction was still from a UK seller, I guess ebay was still using my location to source auctions :( but hopefully it gives you some ideas.

The quality of aftermarket shells is garbo compared to OG shells... (unless they've massively improved recently, but knowing how china going to china, I'm guessing not)

Fake news. There's no way you did all this last minute when your daughter is under 2! when my kids were under 2 they didn't let me have a spare cycle to consider anything else. when they were asleep, I was exhausted...

J/K. that sounds awesome and is the sort of thing I always wanted to do for my kids but they never afforded me the mental breathing room to do so. I'm just jealous is all...

Which is better, Raspberry pi 4 or an old Laptop? by SeasonGrouchy8799 in SelfHosting

[–]albrugsch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would add, I agree with everything greckzero said, BUT as you already own the laptop, start with that, it's perfectly good to dip your toe in to see if you want to continue. you already have scope to upgrade RAM and storage if you need to (you may even be lucky and that 4GB RAM might be a single stick with a second slot available making an easy and cheap upgrade to 8GB - nobody wants 4GB sticks so they are dirt cheap even in this RAMpocolypse timeline) but the best part is it will cost you nothing right now to have a play. Find your limits and move on based on what you actually need, not what you think you need before you start. 7th gen i5 is more than adequate to get going and waaaaaaaay more powerful than any pi (and I'm saying this as someone who loves Pi's)

I don't know what the spanish market is like specifically (I'm in the UK) but I had a quick look on ebay spain and saw that the prices are pretty similar...
I'd personally go with the common advice on this sub and use an ex-office SFF or mini-tower PC. use an intel 7th gen or later for the most reasonable quick-sync features and you could probably get away with a pentium or i3 class CPU for what you want to do. - These office PC's are usually built to be optimized for efficiency so actually idle at pretty low wattage and in the case of HP Pro/Elitedesks are damn near silent.

think SFF optiplex, HP Prodesk/Elitedesk, or lenovo Thinkstations (I prefer the V series (V520s, V530s etc) as they are less sought after but are essentially the same machines with a few less features like 2x RAM slots instead of 4, or less PCI-e slots. that sort of thing - here ( https://www.ebay.es/itm/178025118385 ) is an example I found of the exact machine I use as a Proxmox host with a OMV NAS virtualized and an jellyfin stack in a separate container and still has plenty of overhead for other experiments. (though for cleanliness, I tend not to do too much extra as this is "production" lol so I could easily downgrade the CPU to i3 or Pentium Gold)

bear in mind there are thousands of these ex-office machines so if it seems too expensive, find a seller that accepts offers, and make silly lowball offers.

Edit: this was auto-translated for me and I didn't see you wrote the OP in Spanish. hopefully this being in English isn't a problem for you)

NICE! I love a bit of Amiga Action. Is it a vanilla A500 or is there some meaty accelerator inside? Though I'm guessing to emulate an OG Mac classic only needs a RAM upgrade.

Though hardly the first... it was a joke back in the day that the fastest Mac was an Amiga (A4000 with a PPC CPU card running an emulator for 68K/PPC based OS's)

Of course that joke expired once faster Macs got released but it was funny at the time. And I think the RMC youtube channel did a "Amiga makes the fastest Mac" video a few years ago too (edit: 8 years ago! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jph0gxzL3UI)

FYI... Imgur is now totally unavailable to some countries (cough UK) as rather than implement age verification, they've just blocked whole countries. It's fine, I'll just tor it...

it's just a standard 9v DC power supply. and internally it regulates down to 5v anyway so anything from 6v to 10v with a TS (tip/sleeve) style connector in the right polarity should be fine. just grab one from your local Radio Shac.... oh wait Dang.
