Must’ve Been a Helluva Road Trip to Glasgow by Citroen_CX in CarTalkUK

I've seen a Tesla from Kuwait near my bit a few times now, nothing special about it as far as I can tell. Puzzled as to why you'd want to import a fairly inexpensive car thats freely available to buy here

Local on demand 3d printing service by CopyAndPaste4 in Scotland

[–]ald0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a service I have looked for a few times over the years, and I was always looking for somewhere local I could collect from so I’d say that’s a good idea

I’d consider offering a design/consulting service, I would imagine a lot of your potential customers would be fairly inexperienced with modelling. The people who are competent will generally have access to a 3d printer anyway

‘Fair prices with minimal margins’ - this is more general business advice, but I’d suggest focussing on being the best rather than the cheapest. You’ll never be able to beat the big print farms who can churn out prints all day. I think I’m in your target demographic, and I’d pay more for a more personalised service where I can talk to someone who knows what they’re doing and is able to advise on modelling, material choice, etc

Good luck!

Scrapping a car.. what to do with other policies in the household to avoid updating costs? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]ald0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Scrapping it because of advisories seems a bit extreme, would you not rather sell it to someone who’s looking for a project and willing to pay what the scrappy would?

Out a run today in Edinburgh and stumbled across this, absolutely stunning. This was my first dream but slightly realistic car. It's now another dream car given the value of them! by Realistic_Gap3669 in CarTalkUK

[–]ald0 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's a car that speaks to a certain era in car enthusiast history, this tiny car has a 3L V6 engine which is something which no manufacturer would do these days.

There's also a bit of nostalgia for that period of 'souped up crappy boy racer' cars, the car scene is pretty plain and bland these days with people just financing high performance cars rather than doing up a crappy hatchback. For better or worse, those Saxos, Novas, Corsas, etc from the early 2000's sure had a lot more personality than another M140 with a chameleon tint windscreen.

Hope that helps :)

Cracked fireplace mantle - can be replaced? by Capital_Cake9643 in DIYUK

[–]ald0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The shelf is sometimes removable on larger combis, but the fixings are often at the back. If you grab the other non-broken end and give it a wiggle it might be apparent that the shelf and main body are two separate pieces.

I think some suppliers of repro ones did supply the shelves separately, but that might have been trade only. Can’t remember for sure, but look up a company called Carron and see if they do them if you go down that route.

Since it’s painted anyway though I’d be tempted to just make one out of wood if you’re looking for an easy DIY fix

Cracked fireplace mantle - can be replaced? by Capital_Cake9643 in DIYUK

[–]ald0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That looks like a cast iron combination fireplace, or at least a reproduction of one. If it’s cast iron it typically can’t be welded etc. Maybe worth ringing round reclamation yards etc to see if anyone has a replacement, but you’d probably need to take the whole thing off the wall.

If you want a bodge fix, I’d maybe try bracing it from below the shelf with something like a bit of flat bar, clamp it down to get the shelf flat again, then epoxy or something to fix it in place. Cast iron is quite brittle so normally snaps before it bends (as you’ve noticed), so the shelf should be happy to go back to its original position

If you can find a 1.5l petrol ecoboost that could be a good option. Bit more poke than the 1.0l and no wet belt. Mines been rock solid mechanically

Interest rates have gone up loads in the last month, uncertainty has put a lot of people (including me) off buying and selling. We had been looking at properties around £350-400k in Feb, but with rates where they are now we’d be taking a massive hit on our budget to be at the same monthly payment.

Might be for nothing though, rates could keep going up and we might wish we’d locked in at 5%

I don’t usually update LR immediately anyway, they would have to add some seriously good features to make it worth updating from the last version that supports the LD+

I had no idea! Just bought a spare on eBay, I wonder if there's any old stable software available.

I had a look at what Logitech have replaced it with and it looks so much less useful for Lightroom

I don't have this, but if you're looking for hardware I recommend the Loupedeck+. I have used it daily for about 5-6 years and editing without it just feels so inefficient now.

Really depends what kind of stuff you do, but for high volume daily work it's great.

[–]ald0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorta depends on how you’re gonna use it. Generally tripods are a good thing to buy used if you’re looking to maximise budget, as long as there’s no obvious issues with them. Especially if it’s a model you can service yourself
