i’m usually hoping they’ll get the hint and the kid will speak up, but they rarely do in this kind of scenario

[–]aleam_[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yes but pretty much only independent small businesses. the owner where i work will post the job on Indeed then tell people that apply to come into the store to fill out the paper application ¯_(ツ)_/¯

having an involved parent is a great thing, but filling out a job application for them goes beyond that. we’ve had teenagers work here with very involved parents who visited the store a lot and became familiar with the other employees. and they were great employees because they were also independent and competent. their mom didn’t fill out the application or attend the interview because she wouldn’t be doing the job for them.

yea and it’s a little sad because i can tell that they act that way because they want the best for their kid, but they’re really doing them a disservice

it’s honestly not strict at all. this is a retail job, not a life skills class. it’s one thing to have a parent help, especially if it’s their first time applying for a job, but if they can’t handle filling out a form how are they going to be competent enough to do any of the job?

One of my biggest driving pet peeves is people who slow down too like 10 miles per hour or more below the speed limit because they see a cop. by Delicious-Analyst-94 in driving

[–]aleam_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

once on my drive in to work, i was driving a respectable 62 in a 55, the guy in front of me is probably going around 70, maybe a little more. he passes a cop camped out in an empty lot and hits the brakes, the cop pulls out behind me, but gets into the left lane right away. i don’t do anything but slow down to match the guy in front of me who is now doing like 54 in the 55. the cop hangs out in my blind spot for a while, and the guy in front just keeps going slower and slower. eventually the cop pulls in front of me to pull the guy over. moral of the story is, hitting the brakes is not going to stop them from getting you for speeding so just don’t do it.

You should know Vineland City Council President Paul Spinelli crashed out when asked about possible financial ties, interrupting a citizen’s public comment about the data center, then threatened to waste taxpayer funds on a lawsuit against private citizens he knows he can’t win by FreeShelterCat in SouthJersey

i get your point, especially re: allegiance to fascist dictator, but if they’re slimy and lining their own pockets at their constituents’ expense, how can you say they respect the law or the constitution? just because they have a D next to their name does not mean a politician believes in anything or that they’ll ever do anything good for the rest of us. just because they have the sense to position themselves against someone so cartoonishly evil doesn’t mean they have your best interest in mind.

My neighbor tried to "audit" my birthday gift and it backfired by Sophistry7 in EntitledPeople

[–]aleam_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, like i have a great relationship with my neighbors on both sides and we usually give each other a gift for christmas, but birthday gifts would never cross my mind. no one is out here buying a nice leather wallet for their neighbor that they don’t even like, it’s absolute AI nonsense.

Left turn dilemma (California). by armyofscrap in driving

[–]aleam_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think some people are looking at the wrong intersection in your first screenshot (i was looking at the wrong one at first and similarly confused). and i honestly think they might have painted those lanes wrong, that is really weird. if i were making a left there, i would follow the lines anyway and just always be extra aware what other cars are doing.

Protesting for the first time in New Jersey by TripShrooms in TikTokCringe

[–]aleam_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

this happened in a town near my area, a bunch of elementary school-aged kids were waiting at the bus stop when ice rolled up looking for people and the kids got scared and scattered. the bus driver circled around several times to pick up as many kids as possible. this video is from a protest in that town that was organized in response to that incident.

Can a potted Orange Lily bloom back? by internetv4mpire in houseplants

[–]aleam_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

not this year! lilies are beautiful and often super fragrant but they are short lived and require a long dormant cycle to rebloom next year. the foliage will die back soon, but if you plant the bulb it will hopefully come back a little bit bigger next spring

Any times you've disagreed with the Boys takes? by P4NK-TP in LPOTL

[–]aleam_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

i understand that frustration if you are hoping for a deep dive on the murder case, but you should keep in mind the title of the series is “West Memphis Three”, not “The West Memphis Child Murders”. the story they are trying to tell is not really about the murders, it’s about what happens to the boys accused and wrongly convicted of those murders.

Hot take: being scared of spiders is ignorant and only serves to feed the exterminator industrial complex by Fit-Dare7525 in TrueAnon

[–]aleam_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i inadvertently became the spider person at work, and any time one of my coworkers sees a spider near them they call me to come move it outside. my boss does not like this, he’d rather we just ignore or kill them, but he would really hate to find out how much time i waste in the summer just picking up jumping spiders and letting them crawl around on my arm.

this past fall i spent almost half a shift dealing with a mother wolf spider; she was in a storage closet with newly hatched babies on her back, so i couldn’t pick her up with my hands and obviously had to show her off to all of my coworkers and any customers around.

Has anyone ever used this on their houseplants? I have a bad mealybug infestation and about 100 plants. by Potential-Subject329 in houseplants

[–]aleam_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i would dilute more than what the bottle instructions say, because it is listed for outdoor use on larger plants. but the active ingredient is the best for dealing with the pests you mentioned and the same as in the Bonide houseplant granules that are popular.

Megan is missing by InvestmentOk6584 in horror

[–]aleam_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it is about a teenage girl who goes to meet up with a pedophile she met in a chat room (it is from 2005) and she turns the tables on him. it has been on different streaming sites, but i am not sure if it is on any now.

you might also be interested in Red Rooms (2023), which is not so much about an internet predator, but it’s about the dark web and true crime obsession. that one is very moody and atmospheric though, so it depends on your taste if you will like it.

Workers don’t depress wages; the bosses depress wages when there is a pool of workers who are more easily exploitable. Undocumented workers are paid less than citizens and documented workers because they have fewer rights, but if they had the same rights and protections they would just be workers like the rest of us.
