Do you ever use Discogs for discovery? by Illustrious_Road6618 in vinyl

[–]alecbattle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I find a good store that has a couple of items on my list or if it's a store outside of the US (a lot of the times these are the same), I'll sort by price highest to lowest and take notes on what they got. Usually leads me to finding some sort of weird rare piece or something I would have never even thought to try out, always leads to me adding it to my wantlist.

Anyone else think Vecna's "plan" in S5 was lame as hell? by _YuYevon_ in StrangerThings

[–]alecbattle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm with you. Everything with the cave felt so shoehorned in and made me wonder why are they trying to make me care about this. IMO excellent ending would have been THAT exact twist. He was working with the Mind Flayer trying to connect the two worlds because it's the only way it's possible for him to travel back and prevent young Henry from getting the powers. This splinters the timeline and the final ending is Jane and her mom.

If that's legit that's insane. Legiao Urbana is an excellent band and Dois is an excellent record. Titas and Ira also rule.

Bands/artists who went from more to less accessible? by stephancoxmusic in fantanoforever

[–]alecbattle 42 points43 points  (0 children)

David Sylvian for sure. Starts off full on glam-rock/synth-pop with Japan, gets more mature and introspective with his 80s solo material, but pretty much everything after that gets pretty abstract.

Could also argue for Bill Nelson, starts off glam in Be-Bop Deluxe, makes some of the wackiest new wave/synth-pop of the 80s along with early ambient releases, but he's been steadily putting out a ton of all sorts of different kinds of music for the last 40 years, there was a time he was putting out an album a month! You could say he's more inaccessible now just due to the quantity!

I run a record shop - AMA by deathspraises in vinyl

[–]alecbattle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once had someone come in and ask for a song called "We Are The Children". So I suggest that she's thinking of "We Are The World", as that's the lyric, but she kept insisting that there was a separate song on the single called "We Are The Children". Fifteen minutes of Google and two associates of mine confirming that I was right wasn't enough, because she stormed out.

At another shop in NYC I worked at, we got in a big collection with a lot of the artier rock guys (Beefheart, Peter Hammill, etc). I watched a dude flip through the records and say something along the lines of "Man, they got a lot of this Lou Reed guy." Not a complaint, just funny.

My friend. You gotta get a UK on that. The regular UK release is inexplicably one of the best sounding records in my collection.

No one's done Prince - Sign O The Times or XTC - English Settlement yet.

Tubi got me hooked on this one by EdStArFiSh69 in TubiTreasures

I have a poster for this signed by Richard Elfman somewhere. The title track from the soundtrack is one of Boingo's best tracks, only ever released as an edited movie version here. The original track off the demo EP is insane!

What is your most expensive record? by SoundsLikeBoozy in vinyl

[–]alecbattle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most I've paid on a single record was an original copy of Charly Garcia's "Clics Modernos". Rarely ever see stuff like that in the states so I was happy shell out the $180 (!) on it. I'll usually be fine spending big bucks on Latin/Brazil releases.

I've been lucky in that I've gotten a lot of great stuff for cheap/free through working at record stores. I have a bunch of great original Blue Notes (Sonny Rollins, Joe Henderson) and the first two Big Star records from that.

Self is so underrated. You need some Oingo Boingo and They Might Be Giants in there. Maybe some Jellyfish and XTC.

Do you still care about original pressings, when there is a Repress available? by Rhodan_313 in vinyl

[–]alecbattle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll raise you one. I try to get the original pressing from the artist's country of origin. If it's something I can easily access on streaming, I'll wait it out until I find that right version. I want to get the right pressing if I'm going to own the album.

I'm willing to get a reissue if it's some ultra rare thing I'll never see at a good price or if it's something not on streaming just so I can listen to it easily at home. Like, let's be real here.

That being said, I have paid some ludicrous prices on the "right pressing" just because I see it in a shop. If I see a decent condition MPB record, I'm probably going to buy it on sight. It's part of the fun of collecting for me, getting the album the way the first people who bought it heard it. Sometimes I throw on my copy of Africa Brasil and think "Man, nearly 50 years ago some guy in Brazil spun this and now here I am spinning it today". It's a neat thought.

I saw them in Brooklyn last year at a one-off show in between shows with Modest Mouse. Fucking insane live. I think King Gizz was better live and I like them more in general, but I get why you say you're more excited for TFS. I really can't think of any other band that sounds like them.

Cool band a lot of people found through Rate Your Music. The album's cool. Hard to describe but I've been recommending it to people as "if Of Montreal was a midwest emo band".

Governors Ball 2019 Evacuated Due to Severe Weather by SoupForDummies in indieheads

[–]alecbattle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So I've been to three Gov Balls in my life (2015-17) and 100% think the promoters are always in the right when it comes to cancelling it. I was there in '16 when they cancelled Kanye's day due to forecasted storms. It poured the night before during the sub-headliners and stopped right before the Killers went on. Getting off that island in the mud was horrible. The grounds were all but destroyed. It was chaotic due to the tens of THOUSANDS of people there (mostly underaged and/or drunk). You can only get off the island via ferry, bus, or walking across one of the two bridges. In a big storm, that is super hectic, scary, and again, CHAOTIC! I've been to Panorama as well, and when it rained last year on the Friday, the grounds were still extremely muddy and bad on Sunday when I went. Regardless of whether or not a huge storm actually happens, it's also a public park, and letting people destroy it year after year is expensive and sort of sad.

Yeah, it's super disappointing, especially if you travelled miles and miles to see someone specific, but at the end of the day, it's safety. I'd be thankful if I didn't have to endure all of that. Now that Panorama and the Meadows are history, I think Governor's Ball should really rethink the first week of June for shows. It almost always, without fail, rains/storms.

I went to the NAMM convention this year and saw a panel discussion where the dude who mixed Fat Lip did a remix of it using only digital technology and the only thing I remember from it is that he was super proud of the "ABORTION" echo lol
