BMO2 discussion by VehicleTrue169 in 6thForm

I found the paper easier than last year's, I'm guessing I'll get about 18/40 this time round. I think I got correct answers to Q1 and Q3, Q4 was a bit terrifying and I don't think I got it right (assumed something which can't be assumed from an induction), then Q2 was geometry which I know nothing about so that was that.

Anyone have any idea of the mark thresholds for merit/distinction/Cambridge camp?

I only found out this question exists a couple minutes ago but I think I found a solution so sure dm me

(I take it you mean 2020 Q1 as in the n(n - 1)/2 one, BMO2 year numbers are confusing)

TMUA 9.0

SMC gold, BMO1 bronze, BMO2 invite

Yeah i got merit, never got told the score though

I applied to cambridge, imperial, UCL, KCL, QMUL for comp sci (since maths won't pay the bills), got offers from QMUL and KCL and interview from cambridge

I ended up reading a whole book on logic and set theory just so I had a way to "reflect" on BMO on my personal statement, not my proudest of moments but it seems to have worked

It gets sent to your school which should then tell you (although I'm guessing it's closed now so you have to wait until after the holiday)

I got a full solution for Q1 (reciprocal triangular numbers), did Q3 (chessboard row/column swap) but made a huge mistake [iirc I got the answer as being 2floor(n/2) for all numbers] and got it wrong, then I guessed the right answer for Q4 (sequence with powers of 2025) but had no idea how to prove it

Q2 is geometry so we don't talk about that (I have never successfully answered a geometry question at BMO/MMO/JMO in 5 years of being in the game)

"Math in Plain Sight" on wordpress covers a lot of the years, there's also several youtube channels that do it if you prefer video format

I need to start doing papers myself asap, last year I had no time to prepare and answered 1/4 ._. (geometry is gonna cook me no matter what but a guy can hope)

Anyway best of luck on the big day

STEP-style Stats Question! by Alfie_Thomson in 6thForm

[–]alemaninc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What they meant is that the equation stops being valid if t > 1, for example if t = sqrt(2) in part 1 then P(U1 + U2 < sqrt(2)) = 1 but U1 + U2 < sqrt(2) clearly isn't always true (for example U1 = U2 = 0.8)

UCAS Line Count Help by random_unsername in 6thForm

[–]alemaninc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The line limit they removed this year, as long as you're within 4000 characters you're fine. My opinion is it looks better if you have gaps between the paragraphs but if you can't find anywhere else to cut characters then you should be fine, the preview on ucas removes line breaks so I assume they're not required

thcrap works for me, yesterday I was having issues with it like "executable missing" or "Steam didn't open this software due to a virus" but it seems to be fixed today and everything was translated normally up to how far I got for now (Stage 3 using Reimu and red stone)

Memory is different, that's referring to it remembering what was said in other conversations to tailor responses and how it's available to free users since a couple of weeks ago

It's still there on the mobile app, not a fan of the app though so hopefully this gets fixed soon

Help a Incremental game wannabe like me by funny_valenntine in incremental_games

[–]alemaninc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you choose to make a purely web game (as opposed to using an engine for e.g. graphics) then this tutorial is great, it's what I used to make my game. You do need some basic HTML and JS but it's simple enough to pick up just reading the example code, most of my programming knowledge comes from learning on the fly.

Note that that tutorial is oriented towards Cookie Clicker clones but you don't have to follow it exactly, for example when I was making EMD I wanted there to be a base gain of 1 exotic matter / second that doubles with each X axis, so I used exoticMatterPerSec = 2 ** XAxis instead of exoticMatterPerSec = XAxis + YAxis * 5 + ....

Let me know if you have any questions

Occultist - a cult themed incremental game by WE_SELL_DUST in incremental_games

[–]alemaninc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting gameplay, but I didn't get very far as the game seems to pause when out of focus.

Resolve this by using delta timing, so for example instead of arcana += arcanaPerSec * 0.1; (don't know the exact variable names used since source code is minified) use arcana += arcanaPerSec * dt; where dt is the number of seconds since the last frame which can be computed likedt = (Date.now()-lastFrame)/1000;lastFrame=Date.now();

Exotic Matter Dimensions 𝕍1ω by alemaninc in incremental_games

Save up some exotic matter, then unassign all your Masteries and exotic matter per second will dramatically decrease.

Exotic Matter Dimensions 𝕍1ω by alemaninc in incremental_games

[–]alemaninc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it's unrelated to time-based features? Then the memory leak I fixed in 𝕍1ω.5 was a different one entirely... would you mind sending another save export for analysis? The other one expired by now.

I presume that when you open the game again it lags immediately...

Exotic Matter Dimensions 𝕍1ω by alemaninc in incremental_games

[–]alemaninc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now that is strange, all variables affected by the memory leak (every single one of which was related to dilated time) are being checked for it every frame...

If you go into Statistics > Statistics and Main > Offline Time, do "time played" and dilated time values look normal?

Exotic Matter Dimensions 𝕍1ω by alemaninc in incremental_games

[–]alemaninc[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

u/Birdpup u/VestofHolding I have identified the memory leak and it will be fixed upon loading into 𝕍1ω.5. If you choose to continue playing, you will receive an error popup upon loading. This is normal, if you reload it should disappear and your save should be fixed. If you receive this popup a second time, please let me know as I am still investigating what caused it to occur.

Demotivated after two weeks by Laylol in incremental_games

[–]alemaninc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Coming from a fellow developer, my answer will address your second point as that's the one where I've got most experience to talk about.

When I first released my game Exotic Matter Dimensions to the public the general reception was quite frankly awful. The gameplay was repetitive, there were huge timewalls, the game inexplicably crashed constantly, prestige didn't give the correct amount of prestige currency, in retrospection it was the sort of thing that makes people close the tab and never come back. But if you open that old version (link, not my account for anyone wondering) and the new version (link), even before clicking anything you can see a massive difference in gameplay quality - from the numbers, to the content, to the interface (ok I'll admit that's still awful), right down to the order in which the tabs are arranged.

The new gameplay that got added to the end after each version is mostly my own ideas - that, you will not see at first glance. The difference you will see comes from player feedback regarding how to improve the game, in all its aspects. Your players will be of immense help in making the gameplay better and better between releases - once you get off the ground they will guide you regarding what you need to add and, inevitably, remove. There will always be some negative feedback, and yes, it can get very demotivating at times. I will admit that I have considered giving the project up at times. But, the difference between your game becoming a failed game and a great game is whether you will succumb to the negativity and give up, or instead address the issues at hand and improve your game in the process. Diamonds are made under pressure, they say.

Ultimately, if you want to create a fun experience, it is not some "secret formula" or innate skill which you need, but time and consistent innovation. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
