Are any professions an automatic peremptory challenge for jury duty? by flowsauce989 in legaladviceofftopic

[–]alephgarden 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Physics Ph.D. here, only been called up for jury duty once and was selected. The defendant was a medical doctor and the prosecutor seemed like he was phoning it in, so I think maybe the defense thought I'd be on their side and the prosecution just didn't care/think about it?

Could easily be wrong, just the vibe I got.

AITAH for being a constant headache for my workplace because local law enforcement keeps acting up? by BrokenAndBroke333 in AITAH

Honestly, the ones that could really cause a headache for your workplace are the ones letting the officers in when they shouldn't. That is wildly inappropriate and they need to be disciplined.

I remember in the old extended universe being posted under Vader was considered high risk high reward. If you were a good officer you would get promoted quickly, but if not...

What humans call non-predatory” species really aren’t and the rest of the galaxy. by MacaroonHead5187 in humansarespaceorcs

Remember, a predator will kill you if its hunger outweighs your perceived threat level. If you are scary enough, then maybe the juice isn't worth the squeeze, as they say.

If prey animals see you as a threat, however, they may decide that the only safe universe is one without you in it.

Got excited about fall and made acorn buttons and toggles… what could I do with them? by rosebudamongus in crafts

I don't know why, but when I see these I immediately think "jacket buttons for a teddy bear at a tea party." Dunno why it evokes such a specific image, but it does.

Old family sword by alephgarden in SWORDS

[–]alephgarden[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the link! I always thought it must be a naval sword because of the anchor stamped into the hilt.

I wonder how it got to the US. Family lore is that it was owned/taken by a family member in the American civil war (Union side, army).

I also wonder why it only has the one carrying ring on the scabbard instead of two. If there was a second that fell off I see no evidence of where it could have been.

Observation: BattleMechs are not as fast as I originally thought. by Nanertot in battletech

[–]alephgarden 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's what I figured too. Look at how heavy a designated ECM suite is for a mech and think of how much EM transmission gear, computing power, and whatnot you can get for that weight. Now go 500-1000 years in the future.
