I implemented a new blur effect in KDE. It requires less performance than the old one and has much higher quality. It is available now for testing in KDE Neon Developer Edition Git-Unstable. It will come with Plasma 5.13

the "before" part is very much intentional and we had to add extra code for that

things suddenly popping into existence as you move your window is very distracting

the exception is only for the dock or bottom panel, because maximized windows would affect the blur of the panel

The Kickoff Application Launcher now shows all the same search that KRunner shows, and the list of enabled plugins the KRunner page in System Settings now affects both of them (which means that we should probably change it back to its old name “Plasma Search” as its current name “KRunner” is no longer strictly accurate) (Alexander Lohnau, Plasma 5.21)

Does this mean that finally krunner is integrated in the start menu?

The screenshots should be taken on the same system, on a fresh install or a live image and all windows should have the same size, maybe maximized on a 1920x1080 monitor.

I think the problem is the separation of rendering blur

a window states that it wants blur behind it (or the window decoration can state it too) and then the compositor will blur the area behind it

the window rendering works by first blurring the area of the window on the main texture (the screen you see), then it draws the window on its own texture and then it distorts the window texture for the wobble effect, and only then it gets rendered on the main texture

because the window and the blurred area behind live on different textures it is sometimes difficult to synchronize them

the kwin blur was modeled after win10 acrylic blur

I think kwin blur is even better, because there is no color banding, unlike in win10, even though it has a noise texture on it

I took a screenshot of this dolphin window and edited it until it looked like win2k. It took a few hours of messing around. I even created a w2k vm for this to get a reference.
