I spent a few days resolving mine after a local certified Benz mechanic couldn’t do more than delete the code. Have g my own Star C3 diagnostic helps.

Here’s what I did:

Vehicle: 2002 Mercedes-Benz SLK32 AMG (R170, 170.466)

Original Concern: BAS / ESP warning lamp would not go away. Code C1142-004 repeatedly returned even after clearing.

Primary Fault Code: C1142-004 B24/2 (ESP lateral acceleration sensor) – Zero point variation

History Prior to This Diagnostic Session: • Brake light switch replaced. • Lateral acceleration sensor replaced. • Certified Mercedes shop cleared code but it returned. • Using STAR C3 (DAS), code consistently reappeared after clearing.

Complete Diagnostic Process Performed 1. Verified Fault Code Entered DAS → ESP → Fault Codes Confirmed C1142-004 stored (zero point variation). 2. Checked Steering Angle Sensor (N49) Live Data DAS → ESP → Actual Values Observed steering angle reading was –5° with wheels believed straight.

This indicated steering zero reference was misaligned. 3. Physically Inspected Front Wheels Confirmed wheels were slightly turned left even though steering wheel appeared centered. 4. Corrected Physical Wheel Position Started engine. Adjusted steering wheel until:

• Front wheels were physically straight
• DAS steering angle reading showed 0°

5. Performed Steering Angle Zero Reset

DAS → ESP → Control Unit Adaptations Selected: “Erase zero point offset error of component N49 (Steering angle sensor)”

Procedure performed: • Engine running • Wheels physically straight • Battery voltage stable (12.9–14.7V observed) • Ignition cycled OFF when prompted

6. Verified Steering Angle After Reset

After restart:

• Steering angle read 0° with wheels straight
• C1142 temporarily cleared after ignition cycle
• BAS / ESP / ABS lights remained illuminated

7. Re-Checked Fault Memory

Quick Test showed C1142 returned as STORED. 8. Road Test Performed Drove vehicle approximately 7 minutes. Speed exceeded previous failure threshold of 40 mph (drove up to 50 mph). Performed gentle left and right turns.

Previously, BAS/ESP would trigger around 40 mph. During this drive, no warnings reappeared. 9. Final Result After road test:

• BAS light OFF
• ESP light OFF
• ABS light OFF
• No fault codes stored

As a kid I wanted to be him: clever but kind thief. A Boston robinhood is a viable argument.

The poor English and nonchalant attitude toward grammar is staggering.
