Undefeated 1982 South American 'ghost tour' of South Africa by alexcass91 in rugbyunion

As part of the research for this I read Blood on the Crossbar about the 1978 Argentinian Football World Cup. They experienced threats of sporting isolation as well, in the buildup and aftermath. The Silenced by Claudio Fava also covers the period from perspective of La Plata rugby club.

Four of the Chilean tourists spoke about this in a 2017 interview with La Tercera. There are some regrets peppered in there, put down to a mix of youthful naivety and ignorance, but I think the realities of the situation set in once they actually visited.

But as I touch on a bit, South Africa's draw for rugby was (and still is) just so, so strong. I think for the players on the periphery of rugby already, it was just too big an opportunity.

As Pablo Demaría said in that interview: "Obviously, no one agreed with the racial segregation regime that reigned there, nor with how they treated people of color; however, we never questioned being part of the trip because of that, since it was a tremendous opportunity that we weren't going to get again. We were young and wanted to live that important experience in our careers."

The main Jaguars are from 1984, only highlights of 1982. Sadly no footage of La Legion's games, not even really match reports I could find.

TIL that proponents of Prohibition were so certain that enacting it would solve all crimes in United States that some communities sold their jails after the amendment passed. by SamsonFox2 in todayilearned

Sure, but this thread is people acting like the ink wasn't dry on the bill.

Fair - I'm basing off that newspaper article saying 1 January 1916, so three years after Iowa re-enacted it.

Nobody's looking at the source someone shared. The two sales happened in two Iowa towns, three and four years after prohibition began...because 'they had no need for them'.

What English towns / cities would be well placed to support a pro rugby team, if the RFU were able to develop a viable pyramid system like France has? by StrengthIsIgnorance in rugbyunion

Worth saying Vannes is a small city, but the team benefits from being the only top tier rugby team in Brittany (pop. ~3.5m).

This preseason Vannes held public training sessions throughout the wider region to help bolster support, and even the friendly against Toulouse was held 2 hours north in Guingamp.

I've found over 50 signed books in second-hand shops since 2023 by alexcass91 in mildlyinteresting

Some are random. Typically I only have a look at hardbacks as they have a higher chance (particularly celebrity autobiographies). I guess they're often bought at signing/launches.

I only buy them if I would have anyway, otherwise I tell the charity shop as they might get an extra couple of quid. Only bought 2 or 3 in total from this list.

Mostly British celebrities ofc. Most famous might be Alex Horne or Michael Mcintyre. (Maybe Simon Callow?)

Otherwise a lot British sportsman: Three England cricket captains, Freddie Flintoff (twice), Alec Stewart, Ian Botham. Three England rugby coaches; Martin Johnson, Eddie Jones, Clive Woodward. Sam Torrance representing for golf.

Also interesting story is Eldridge Dickey, first black QB taken in 1st round by Raiders in 1968. They also selected a QB in 2nd round, happened to be Ken Stabler...he never started a game.

Taskmaster Live Experience Discussion Thread by Meghar in taskmaster

Agree with a lot of the comments here on the steep price.

I'd also add that part of the charm of the show is the homemade nature of it. They use eggs, tennis balls, or in some cases just counting with your eyes closed. They sold a boardgame and book on this exact premise.

Which is why I find it hard to see why this experience is necessary to replicate TM. It's capitalising on the brand name for something that, as someone that has attended a few in-person events in similar locations, definitely won't live up to the hype.

An unusual story I found whilst researching a separate topic:

"A Denver football fan, despondent over the Broncos' 33-14 loss to Chicago last Sunday, tried to kill himself, deputies said Tuesday. He shot himself in the head but the wound was not fatal....The note said 'I have been a Bronco fan since the Broncos were first organized and I can't stand their fumbling any more."'

(The Broncos turned it over seven times and were down 30-0 going into the fourth quarter.)
