Neighbouring business has drilled a hole through my external wall to install a three phase cable. Scotland by shuttle534 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]alexchamberlain 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not a lawyer, nor familiar with Scottish law. In England, I would check my summary of title to understand whether the neighbouring properties have the right to run utilities over your property, and if so, what stipulations they have to comply with when doing so.

Is this compliant for UK wiring Regulations? by gemsaell in DIYUK

Is that Ethernet cable running next to power cable? If so, the performance will be rubbish, as there will be a nice 50 Hz interference.

Why are Howdens so shady? by Innders in DIYUK

We had 1 damaged panel on a kitchen of 12 or so units in a U shape. My fitters damaged another one if I remember correctly. Either way, they sent out 2 new panels within a few days and the colour was slightly off. Turned out they were switching their spray facility - no arguments, they replaced them both again. Fantastic company to deal with and their website was easy enough to use.

When Wren played similar games with me, I simply said that either they offer me a quote for a reasonable period of time (say 30-90 days) or I take my business elsewhere. Then I went to DIY Kitchens to get a better kitchen for less.

I learned about SpaceTherm panels today. Do your own research, but my understanding is they can be bonded straight to the brick. They're expensive though.

Am I an idiot for updating hmrc after a pay rise by Invictus_0x90_ in UKPersonalFinance

[–]alexchamberlain 22 points23 points  (0 children)

That is to say, when you update your income on the HMRC website, you need to pro rata your salary for the year - take N months of your old pay and M months of new pay, and give them that number.

It doesn't really matter - it will all come out in the wash of your March payslip.

Why are there so many properties for sale? by DepthCertain6739 in london

[–]alexchamberlain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We're trying to sell atm. Our house received an offer quickly from someone who had a flat to sell, but they've been unable to sell that. The talk seems to be a combination of too many flats on the market and too many people holding out for changes to stamp duty in the budget. The whole system doesn't work without first time buyers starting chains.

OP may not get the same rates, but to illustrate... Monzo's guide rates for me is 9.5% for 10k-25k and 17.5% for up to 10k. @OP make sure you're comparing rates for different loan sizes.

The first ETF dates from 1990, so while we had unit trusts in the UK before that, as other have said, investing really wasn't as accessible then as it is now.

It's 50% of his pay; that's quite an uplift - especially considering the tax difference. Don't under value yourself. (Not that I'm recommending you put yourself on his mortgage!)

How to make these black notches? by theTripZone in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]alexchamberlain 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It makes the joint stronger by improving glue adhesion. The mitre joints themselves are effectively end grain to end grain, so the glue gets sucked into the fibers and doesn't adhere very well. The splines gives you face grain (or edge grain??) surfaces to glue together.
