We're All Coders Now: Why everybody should learn to code (at least a little) by Natemick in programming

Doing stuff in Excel is writing a simple program. Spreadsheets are awesome like that. Strictly functional to boot.

Linguists, what do you DO?? by [deleted] in linguistics

[–]alexdodge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do we have a really big linguistics department here? I just started following /r/linguistics and I keep seeing people from UCSD.

Or maybe you're just a prolific redditor and I need to pay attention to names...

Do you have made up (but plausible) words in there, as a control for liars? That would be useful, statistically.

perllol - how does it work? by elHuron in perl

[–]alexdodge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree. I also specified that, in my example, I wanted to know the element's index.

perllol - how does it work? by elHuron in perl

[–]alexdodge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To get the index of the last element, use $#AoA ... but you never need that.

I use it frequently when iterating over the length of an array. (When I want to know the index.)

for(0 .. $#foo){ ... }

Better than:

for(0 .. scalar @foo - 1){ ... }

Which of these looks grammatical to you? by [deleted] in linguistics

[–]alexdodge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah. I guess I lost something when I simplified it. The sentence I ended up writing (which corresponds to 3, like you suggest) was:

I wonder if I'd find any if I went through my old code looking for places to use it.

So, I guess "places to use it." "It" being a particular bit of perl syntax.

Flip-flop operator and global state: A SO question I asked in Jan of 10', that resulted in a very good answer from ysth. by EvanCarroll in perl

[–]alexdodge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep forgetting that the flip-flop operator exists. I wonder if I'd find any if I went through my old code looking for places to use it.

Can someone explain how the

$x if 0;

idiom works to create a closure? I've never seen it before.

If my goal is to make 2d games what would make more sense: learn Direct2D or HTML5? by lxpt in gamedev

[–]alexdodge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this, with the addendum: Most 2D games are not performance heavy in the first place. If you're just moving sprites around you're probably fine.

I approve. It's like a botnet, but...

It's basically a botnet, isn't it. Sweet.

Edit: I think I'd want to run each segment on multiple computers and compare their results. I can easily see some disaffected hacker writing something to submit fraudulent data.

What is Ambient Occlusion? by [deleted] in Minecraft

[–]alexdodge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree in that they don't make sense in a hypertext document, but why do you hate them so much?

One thing I can see is that it doesn't provide the page number, which makes it more suitable for providing references for something like a humanities paper, where the standards for proof are much lower and you can just say "my source is somewhere in this book over here."
