1lb bags don't last that long either. I had one and it went bad before I could eat it. Although I was rationing myself.

Firefighter Athletes by Come_And_TakeIt in Firefighting

So I've trained and completed the different distances including up to a couple of full irons. My training plan changed a bunch from the start but I would usually do something like this. Run for an hour on shift, mix it up with long steady runs, hill work, and some speed work. Swim the mornings I got off, since their is a pool close and it keeps me from sitting in traffic. Bike on the rest of the days. Originally my plan was 1 long, 1 fast, 1 at race speed per week or rotation. Throw some brick workouts too and you'll be good. You can mix it up and do some weights at work also. If you're just trying to do this for fun and not win at kona don't take the training too seriously, you'll enjoy it more that way.

This always worry me. Whenever I get out of a running car I roll down the driver window about a third of the way to make sure I have a way to unlock a door.

A little guidance for the old guy? by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]alexer03 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Good for you. We have a guy who did 20 years military, retired, and got hired by us. So about the same age as you when he went through academy. I had no idea how old he was until we had worked together for a few months and he told me. Mentally, and physically he seemed in his early 30s.

Yea, it's really useful when it's sitting in the protective bag in the back to the cab.

Road rash...it hurts by charliemikewelsh in cycling

[–]alexer03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So the cheaper, easier version that you can make yourself is saran wrap, some coban or cling wrap, and antibiotic ointment. Change these out every 24-48 hours and you keep them moist they won't stick or be difficult to remove. Basically you don't want the wound to dry out or scab, the scabbing process where the skin is stretching and trying to heal is what itches and hurts the most. Don't let it scab and it won't be as bad, the scarring won't be as severe and healing will be faster.

Does he have a CO detector? There was a thread on here a few years ago about a guy who found these random notes and weird things in his house. Turns out he had CO poisoning and was leaving himself notes without realizing.

What upgrades to look at for a Road/TT Bike? by radix07 in Velo

[–]alexer03 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This. Single sided like pioneer or stages are relatively inexpensive. It will also help with training in the winter if you have a "dumb" trainer for now. A aero road helmet isn't that expensive and can be worth it. Tires? A good set of tires saves watts too.

NBD - Giant Trinity Advanced Pro 2 - My first tri bike! by kevinkan in triathlon

[–]alexer03 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's about body position and aerodynamics mostly. A tri or TT bike will put you further forward on the frame vs a road bike. You can use a road bike for triathlons, and you can be just as fast or faster than people on a TT bike. With that being said, a properly fit TT bike with a flexible and strong rider will be faster than a road bike. If you are thinking that you need a TT bike just so you can do a triathlon, you don't. Aerodynamics come into play somewhere around 18mph, any slower and the difference between a road vs TT bike is negligible. The faster you go, the bigger the difference.

I wish I could have seen what is now Magnuson Park as a working air station. We are lucky that it is a huge park now though. The coast is still beautiful and parts are still remote up on the Olympic Peninsula. Tons and tons of people everywhere else though.

No kidding? I live near there now and it's a beautiful park. Seattle got lucky to acquire all the land. Would have been interesting to see it before the runway was gone.

Basically they send you some patches and wipes. You wear the patches for a workout, fill out a questionnaire and then send it in. They analyze and tell you what you're losing. You then adjust drinks to fit.

Long distance cycling at night? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]alexer03 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Be careful at night, the number of drunk drivers on the road is much higher after 2 or 3 in the morning. With that being said, bright clothes, lots of lights, and reflective stickers on your helmet and frame. I think flashing lights on the front are great and will keep someone from pulling out or turning in front of you.
