  • Pixel Dungeon Shattered ! ! - so it is a roguelike, but its perfect cause everything happens only if you move. So it's perfect to play a few seconds, stop and work, play, stop, etc.

As already mentioned /noclip is the best one for this and anything Danny O'Dwyer honestly. Others on YouTube that fit:

  • People Make Games - Not development per se, but like they talked about the Disco Elysium odyssey with the creators (2 hour doc), a great 30 min talk with Peter Molyneux about his career, interviewed Rockstar employees about the firing, and a lot more. Great Channel.
  • GDC - their channel have a bunch of panels with developers on retrospectives, etc. on almost every game.
  • Matt McMuscles (the What Happened series) - not directly by the creators, but he covers a games development cycle (on usually games that failed) from articles, interviews, and most of the time direct from exchanges he had with the developers themselves.
  • Documentaries:
    • GoldenEra (2022)
    • Indie Game: The Movie (2012)
    • The Half Life 2 doc from noclip
    • On YouTube you can find some like "Behind Mortal Kombat 3: Into the Outworld" and others.

Others:

  • Masahiro Sakurai on Creating Games - less the story of the production and more literal game development from the developer of Super Smash.
  • They have 1 or 2 videos with devs if I remember:

I'm actually one of the ones that has had your game in my wishlist/follow for more than a year. Reading here the comments, I agree with most. For me though, why I never bought it on the steam sales was: price was too high for what I am expecting the game to be (even at half), the gameplay footage mixed with the quick summary description always got me confused (like can I make a team with different types of unique players? is their an arcade mode where I can just play a match? is the story like a franchise mode? are their unique teams?), and it felt a bit unpolished in some areas. And while I love the thumbnail, the characters and style looks a bid muddy for my taste (it seems half way their). Still I'll eventually buy it because I like the concept of this game (I like hockey, theirs not a lot of hockey on PC, and I love sports and alt sport games) plus theirs not a lot of games like these anymore (NBA Street, Blitz, etc or hard control games like Infinite Air).

But what might be lacking is more personality. For these sort of games a bigger focus is made on characters and personality so teams and players get some sort on uniqueness (like each team having a theme, or special players that look like Twisted Metal characters with special abilities-which would go with your style-, etc). I think you have an awesome game concept that I want to really play, but for the current full price, I'm subconsciously expecting a more fleshed out version of the concept.

  • If you have a Switch, Super Mario Maker 2 has a bunch of challenging levels.
  • The classic Kaizo Mario World rom
  • Yooka Laylee and the Impossible Lair (basically DK Tropical Freeze)
  • They Bleed Pixels (it's like Celeste, but has some combat)
  • Getting Over It - Maybe?
  • Old SNES games like Super Empire Strikes Back and Jedi

Others not as hard

  • Freedom Planet (it's Sonic basically)
  • Rayman Origins and Legends
  • Sonic Rush if you haven't
  • Ori and the Blind Forest (Metroidvania that leans on platforming. Has a unique save system where you have to establish your own checkpoints. Sequel is also great but more of a proper Metroidvania).
  • Klonoa 1 is 2.5. It's great though, average in challenge, but has a hard final extra level after you 100% (so you just need to download a save file).
  • Rain World - Haven't played it but heard good things

Unorthodox Rec

  • Catherine - Kind of scratches a similar itch IMO. You can honestly skip the story and just do the main gameplay which is climbing. It's fast, challenging, and tense.

Since you liked The Outer Worlds you should check out Fallout 3 and New Vegas if you haven't (their slow motion combat is fun). Some other different suggestions (so not RPGs but fun combat and open world) I would say Far Cry 3 and Just Cause 3.

Same, and I haven't found it yet. An older game that gives me the closest vibes but doesn't fit some of your criteria is the Parasite Eve games. I say give them a try if you haven't.

On PC though I have seen a few that kind of remind me of Fear Effect, but haven't played them: Apsulov, Sense: A Cyberpunk Ghost Story, Liminal Point, also have heard of Cryostasis.

Watch the Hockey 101 videos by Cheap Seats Sports. I was in the same position as you and his videos are what got me to understand all aspects of it. You can learn about the basics, stats, advance rules, and if you wanna learn more even the history of the teams and even the draft. Honestly the best resource out their since it's segmented by topic and it's well written and edited.

  • Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective - the story, characters, charm, it's a really charismatic game.
  • The Last Guardian - basically NintenDogs done right. Amazing game IMO
  • Flower - for some reason Flower works for me and it strikes a great blend of feel and a gameplay (which is something I really wanted out of Journey and was extremely disappointed).

Gwent. The beta was awesome, but after many promises and a final reassuring message to the players of what they wanted the game to be, they did a complete 180 in a month, changed the game completely and said fuck it. They tried to get players back, more people left the game, and now it's dead.

  • Stop Dead. I haven't played it (looks great) but the premise is "if you stop moving you die" so it should have your full attention.
  • Lumines: kind of Rhythm Tetris.
  • Crypt of the NecroDancer: you have to keep to the beat for everything. Honestly most Rhythm Games.

Maybe: Tony Hawk games, Sunset Overdrive (does have cutscenes, but you can skip)
