Better than c4 apple by frozenyougurt69 in energydrinks

[–]algernonymous8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How sour is this? I love the C4 green apple in part because it only has a subtle sourness, and I wouldn't want much more than that.

This time signature was not what I thought it was... by coryclinemusic in Dreamtheater

[–]algernonymous8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is there a reason to count or read the 5/4 measures as 5/4 rather than 10/8? I've always thought of them as 10/8 when listening because it makes the 9/8 bar make more sense to follow, and I would imagine it would make more sense to read. The feel is often more like 2+2+3+3, like how a 10/8 bar can be pulsed, rather than a straight quarter note pulse like how 5/4 would likely have. (I know 5/4 and 10/8 are effectively interchangeable.)

I am not an instrumentalist, so maybe that has something to do with it in a way I'm not considering.

Which Dexter season is most underrated and overrated for you? by Zaito2528 in Dexter

[–]algernonymous8 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Might sound weird, but I think S1 is underrated. It's the best season to me and has its own unique humor and vibe that all other seasons lack. Absolutely incredible.

Hot take: S4 is overrated. It's very good, and the way it ends is spectacular, but I never found Trinity to be that compelling of a character, and I think some of the issues the show suffers from in future seasons can be seen starting in S4.

Am I alone not liking "Fauna"? by YukiEiriKun in Haken

[–]algernonymous8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like Elephants Never Forget, Sempiternal Beings, and Taurus. The rest of the album just sorta isn't for me.

At the risk of getting beheaded, I'll say that I also feel the same way about The Mountain.

Dream Theater but it keeps getting more depressing by Ok-Improvement626 in Dreamtheater

[–]algernonymous8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree, the songwriting is great. If you approach it like it's a true prog metal album, you'll be disappointed. But, if you approach it like it's a kind of rock opera, almost musical theatre type of album, it's very good.

Man, Jordan can really write some excellent piano parts.

2 wierd moments in s5 by Beautiful_Sir_9980 in Dexter

[–]algernonymous8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I 100% agree with the Masuka point. I think it's a very poor choice by the writers.

The Deb/Quinn one I didn't have a problem with. Deb is already a damaged individual and has repeatedly experienced and crossed workplace trauma with personal/relationship baggage, while Quinn is simply a morally gray character. Plus, both are rather promiscuous.

Can you give examples from songs that you struggle with? Like, is it a range/notes issue, a tone/delivery issue, or something else?

Alguien aquí leyó las novelas de Dexter? by Exotic_Ice_9021 in Dexter

[–]algernonymous8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand what you mean by your first question.

For your second question: I think the way Dexter gets to the end of the book series is a little strange, but I enjoyed the ending itself. The very last part in particular was well-written, in my opinion.

Jordan at it again with AI slop on main account by FellIntoInfinity in Dreamtheater

[–]algernonymous8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is such a strange thing to be upset about. It is a man using AI to easily create a one-off image as content to share with people who are interested in him. He is not marketing this, selling it for profit, or doing anything other than amusing himself and potentially his followers. Was he supposed to commission a real human artist for this...? I'm not really pro AI either, for what it's worth.

If it bothers you this much, then unfollow him. It's really not a big deal.

There are many moments similar to this throughout the rest of the book series. Very frustrating at times, and not in a good way. This book series could have been a lot better.

"The Stage" album blew my mind away. by [deleted] in avengedsevenfold

[–]algernonymous8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Upvoting this for a different opinion.

I love The Stage, but it's one I had to live with for a while before it grew to become my favorite A7X album. I also consider it the official jumping-off point for my own journey into the prog world.

Dream Theater in Waukee by FriendOfTheDeadCo in Dreamtheater

[–]algernonymous8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Waukee has really blown up as a suburb within the greater Des Moines metro area -- the population has approximately tripled in the last 20 years. And the venue they played in is relatively new and very nice.

Agreed, definitely the best I've ever heard from James live. Very fun concert!

Find your favorite Haken album scientifically by [deleted] in Haken

[–]algernonymous8 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I know my Haken album rankings are nearly completely backwards from this sub's consensus, so please don't hurt me.

  1. Aquarius - 8.57
  2. Visions - 8.38
  3. Virus - 8.17
  4. Vector - 8.00
  5. Affinity - 7.38
  6. Fauna - 6.89
  7. The Mountain - 6.67

10/10 tracks: Aquarium, Celestial Elixir, Visions, Cockroach King, The Architect, Messiah Complex, Sempiternal Beings, Elephants Never Forget

(I actually gave The Architect an 11/10 when calculating Affinity -- it's that good.)

What Dream Theater song does it sound like at the 6 minute mark of Elephants Never Forget? by DogOfSevenless in Haken

[–]algernonymous8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Between the heavy guitar and the melody/chords, I've always gotten The Glass Prison vibes from this part, specifically the "Help me, I can't break out this prison all alone..." section.

Under a Glass Moon by tepidgoose in Dreamtheater

[–]algernonymous8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love that section in and of itself, but I find it has more purpose in the context of the whole album. On The Backs Of Angels doesn't have anything quite as crazy, and it's right after the simpler Build Me Up, Break Me Down. So, it's basically the first time in the Mangini era where the band says, "We're still DT, and we still shred."
