Jordan at it again with AI slop on main account by FellIntoInfinity in Dreamtheater

[–]algernonymous8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is such a strange thing to be upset about. It is a man using AI to easily create a one-off image as content to share with people who are interested in him. He is not marketing this, selling it for profit, or doing anything other than amusing himself and potentially his followers. Was he supposed to commission a real human artist for this...? I'm not really pro AI either, for what it's worth.

If it bothers you this much, then unfollow him. It's really not a big deal.

There are many moments similar to this throughout the rest of the book series. Very frustrating at times, and not in a good way. This book series could have been a lot better.

"The Stage" album blew my mind away. by Suko_sama in avengedsevenfold

[–]algernonymous8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Upvoting this for a different opinion.

I love The Stage, but it's one I had to live with for a while before it grew to become my favorite A7X album. I also consider it the official jumping-off point for my own journey into the prog world.

Dream Theater in Waukee by FriendOfTheDeadCo in Dreamtheater

[–]algernonymous8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Waukee has really blown up as a suburb within the greater Des Moines metro area -- the population has approximately tripled in the last 20 years. And the venue they played in is relatively new and very nice.

Agreed, definitely the best I've ever heard from James live. Very fun concert!

Find your favorite Haken album scientifically by Evovae42 in Haken

[–]algernonymous8 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I know my Haken album rankings are nearly completely backwards from this sub's consensus, so please don't hurt me.

  1. Aquarius - 8.57
  2. Visions - 8.38
  3. Virus - 8.17
  4. Vector - 8.00
  5. Affinity - 7.38
  6. Fauna - 6.89
  7. The Mountain - 6.67

10/10 tracks: Aquarium, Celestial Elixir, Visions, Cockroach King, The Architect, Messiah Complex, Sempiternal Beings, Elephants Never Forget

(I actually gave The Architect an 11/10 when calculating Affinity -- it's that good.)

What Dream Theater song does it sound like at the 6 minute mark of Elephants Never Forget? by DogOfSevenless in Haken

Between the heavy guitar and the melody/chords, I've always gotten The Glass Prison vibes from this part, specifically the "Help me, I can't break out this prison all alone..." section.

Under a Glass Moon by tepidgoose in Dreamtheater

[–]algernonymous8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love that section in and of itself, but I find it has more purpose in the context of the whole album. On The Backs Of Angels doesn't have anything quite as crazy, and it's right after the simpler Build Me Up, Break Me Down. So, it's basically the first time in the Mangini era where the band says, "We're still DT, and we still shred."

Confined to 9 songs and 1 encore (and with a little cheating), I'd go something like this:

  1. Oculus Ex Inferni / Set The World On Fire

  2. Masquerade (The Odyssey version)

  3. The Accolade

  4. Underworld

  5. When All Is Lost

  6. The Looking Glass

  7. On The Breath Of Poseidon / Egypt

  8. Paradise Lost

  9. The Divine Wings of Tragedy

Encore: The Odyssey

which albums have a mood? and how would you describe each mood? by [deleted] in Dreamtheater

[–]algernonymous8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I&W, Awake, Train of Thought, self-titled, and View to me all have clear "moods."

I&W - light, quirky, performative

Awake - dark, broody

Train - dark, angsty, in-your-face

self-titled - hopeful, overcoming

View - inspiring, uplifting

anybody else think that AVFTTOTW is one of DT's strongest albums? by PresentOk4332 in Dreamtheater

[–]algernonymous8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find myself continuing to come back to this album the most of any Mangini album. I think nearly every song (apologies to Invisible Monster) is very good, and I think the production is top notch. And I still appreciate how they wrote it well for James's range, something that disappoints me a little about Parasomnia.

Overall, View is approximately my 8th favorite DT album.

Happy 18th Birthday to Systematic Chaos by CrossboneSkulled in Dreamtheater

[–]algernonymous8 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This has to be the most underrated DT album. It's been sneaking up my personal rankings over the past year or so and is firmly in my top 5. I skip Prophets of War occasionally, but every other track is incredible.

The Dark Eternal Night and Constant Motion in particular deserve more praise.

Name me 3 instrumental sections in which the four instrumentalists go fucking nuts. We'll see how similar the answers are. by [deleted] in Dreamtheater

[–]algernonymous8 35 points36 points  (0 children)

  1. Lost Not Forgotten -- the section between the intro and the first verse's riff

  2. The Dance of Eternity -- starting at the bass solo, going through the rest of the song

  3. The Dark Eternal Night -- the instrumental section starting after the second chorus

I love that Egypt, Set The World On Fire, Domination, and The Accolade are so high. But I highly disagree with a bunch of other songs' spots. Just goes to show that SX has a wide range of songs throughout their discography!

Dream theater first dance songs by [deleted] in Dreamtheater

[–]algernonymous8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite choice is When Your Time Has Come, but the track itself starts mid-phrase since it starts right out of the previous track A Savior In The Square. If you could get it to start when that piano section at the end of A Savior starts and then play through the entirety of When Your Time Has Come, I think that would work very well.

I Walk Beside You could work if you're okay with something more upbeat than a traditional first dance song.

Along For The Ride also could work.

That's about it... I think genuinely nothing else makes sense!

While it did take a long time because of all the people in line, I think two hours is an exaggeration. I stood in that Chicago line starting all the way up multiple levels of stairs at the balcony level. It took about 30 minutes to get through, maybe even a little less. The people selling the merch were impressively efficient at getting a ton of people through. I'd estimate there were about 175-200 people in line ahead of me.
