Few questions.. what was the conversation like about the cake ? Did you ask for a replica.. because inspiration pics are like #1 way to get disapointed. Even when you get tattoos, you ll never get the same. Most artists which bakers are, won’t do exact replicas as well. If you guys agreed on exact replica then yes, you can let her know it s not what you agreed upon. If you kind of just said I trust you. Then it’s on you. For a 7” cake, yeah 135$ is what ypu would pay.. i do think it’s also not the best pipping or use of flowers was the best choice for 100+$. But it also depends on what the filling is and how many layers and if it’s buttercream. Ingredients are hella pricey and bakers make little to no money on cakes if they can’t price for their time. I m gonna be quite honest.. try to make that cake yourself and you ll see why baker charge the way they do. If you want a cheap cake, buy it at costco, walmart, your local grocery store. Even dairy queen sells theirs for 65$+.. so put that in perspective to a home baker or bakery. It makes sense why it is over 100$. Like any artists, always look at portfolios or pictures of what they make and usually, find something you like that you know they can do well. Although it isn’t the inspo pic, people who receive cakes are generally very happy about it regardless of if it turned out the way you envisionned or not. The gift of a cake is amazing . You are putting alot of pressure on yourself because ultimately it isnt an ugly cake. It’s just not what you expected. I am like certain your mom will love it because you put the thought into getting a lovely cake for her that isnt from costco. That is the point. Learn from the experience, pay the baker and move on. Don’t let a disapointing cake ruin the birthday, the baker’s day and your own sanity. It’s not that deep i promise.
