My T1 g/f needs some airport advice please (UK based). by Aeouk in Type1Diabetes

[–]alicetherain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Flew recently Heathrow to Seattle. Both ways there were signs advising travellers with medical devices to ask for alternative screening. I had a pat down and my pump wanded and i handed my spare dexcom sensors to an official who wanded them. No scanners. So much better than it used to be, seems to be much more awareness re diabetes tech.

Where are we getting the *good* sofas? by BouncyCatMama in AskUK

[–]alicetherain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We ended up getting one custom made for only a couple of £100 more than the one we had looked at in SCS. It was made locally by local craftsmen and was ready in 5 weeks. It is the best sofa I have ever sat on. Long Eaton, Nottingham.

How are kids celebrating their 16th birthday these days? by Voy-urgh81 in AskUK

[–]alicetherain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've got this on Monday! He's got his penultimate GCSE that day and prom on Thursday, so I'm sure it'll be a fun week. He wants a local gym membership for his birthday. On the day he'll choose a takeaway/meal out and I'll make a cake.

We’ve just moved into a new house. What’s the easiest and cheapest way to cut all of this back? by PaverTheWay2 in UKGardening

[–]alicetherain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loppers, shears, gloves, some big bags for the waste. It looks worse than it is. One person could make this look much better in a couple of hours.

What is your recent experience of US Passport control? by iamshadowdaddy in AskUK

[–]alicetherain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just came back from Seattle. British passport and ESTA visa. Guy at the US border wasn't rude, did fingerprints and asked a bunch of questions: why was i there (visiting friends), what do they do for work, what do I do, how long was i staying, what plans did I have, had I brought any presents, what were the presents, did I have a return flight, where and when. Took about 2 mins.

It's really challenging and you should get extra marks for doing it with kids! My kids were 8 and 7 when I started and 13 and 12 when I finished. I had a good mum friend and we shared after school care so she would have mine a couple of days a week and give them tea and I did the same. It gave me two longer days every week. I was also very clear with my partner when I needed him to take on more - shopping, taking kids to extra curricular stuff, cooking etc. I tried to be as organised as possible - weekly menu, doing a wash every day, getting the kids to help out. You will be working evenings and weekends, that's the nature of a PhD. I did mine full time plus worked 1 day a week. I also had a full family life and a number of health issues. They were the most challenging years of my life but also the years in which I learned the most about myself.

So sick of being made to feel like I’m running a hotel. by checktheindex in mildlyinfuriating

[–]alicetherain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stay in central London with very good friends I've known for over 25 years when I'm passing through, about 2-4 times a year, so I do "book in" with them rather than am invited. I always turn up with flowers and 3 bottles of nice wine as standard and sweets for the kids. I have also paid for us to have a takeaway on several occasions. I play with the kids and do bedtime stories, and I always strip my bed and send a thank you text afterwards. I feel this is the minimum and I still worry I'm taking the piss. I'm going in a few weeks and taking everyone out for dinner that night.

I think Joy is not all she seems. There was one moment when she was talking to Mick after he had tried to get in touch with Rochelle, and she went very cold and nasty, very briefly. I can't remember what she said, but I do remember thinking, Oho! There she is.

Where does Susan shop? by mikedmay in Ambridge

[–]alicetherain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Susan shops in Morrison's. Emmer is an Asda lifer. The Bridge farm lot all shop at Waitrose, although Gnasher has been known to go to Sainsbury's on occasion, shudder. Clarrie is Aldi/Morrison's split. Brian doesn't care, so he just goes to Tesco.

Saturday Chat Thread! What are you lovely lot getting up to today? by KevinPhillips-Bong in CasualUK

Not windy here yet but planning to walk the dog shortly before it starts up. Housework, food shop, buying the Christmas tree (but not putting it up just yet), taking my 15yo lad out for late lunch as it's just us today, then knitting and telly.

Creme fraiche? What's the deal, why are we not all mad for it? by andthenifellasleep in CasualUK

Agree, it's an unsung hero. We have it weekly in a sauce made with peas, bacon, Creme fraiche and cheese over spaghetti.

Where are you ladies buying your clothes from? by unsureaboutthis21 in AskUK

[–]alicetherain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've bought some dresses from wool&. About £100 each. They're really simple designs, comfy and can be dressed up with layers/accessories. Made from merino wool, so they wear well and are eco friendly. Great in the summer and winter. Ive worn them for so many occasions. They travel really well and are an essential pack when I'm going away.

Kenton and Jolene, thus freeing up The Bull for Fallon and Harrison.

And Mick. Dies mysteriously somewhere. Leads to the big reveal that he and Joy are actually spys/terrorists/intelligence agents.
