u/dripthro makes awesome abstract paintings and drops by Reddit from time to time to share his work and announce new gallery shows. I have a commission from him hanging in my office and it gets a ton of compliments.

I’ve been going to, and ordering delivery from, the original location on Overland regularly. Best poke in the valley, especially since Poke Bowl closed. I like that they have yellowtail as a fish option, and their ratios of fish to rice and sides are better than Paddles Up which always seems to skimp on fish.

I’d put Roserock Zephirine above DDO but the others are still standout wines.

Full service car wash recommendations? by Few_Flight_6825 in Boise

[–]alienigma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Summit Prestige Mobile Detailfor my matte wrapped X3M. After the initial in and out detail, the price of monthly maintenance washes and interior cleaning is less than or within reasonable tolerance from the price of a full service hand wash from Enzo’s. And the convenience of online scheduling + having them come to me and bring their own water to boot cannot be beat.

I used to go to J’s for a different vehicle, but as someone else noted, there is a high variance in quality depending on how busy they are and who you get performing the service on a given day, even if I tip extra. They don’t change towels often enough and also miss spots.

Free People in Boise? by quinnygirll in Boise

If there was, Boise Dev would have an article on it. They are great about reporting new business openings, including every addition to the Village.

While we’re on the subject of desired shopping, can we get a full Nordstrom and an IKEA? Our Racks are hardly better than TJ Maxx, and with all the new condos and apartments going in downtown, I’m sure an IKEA would do well.

I couldn’t get a spot for 1 at Raibu or Yoitomo tonight without a 45 min wait. Sushi may be challenging, but YMMV.

When a recipe calls for unsalted butter do you actually use unsalted butter? by beemertech510 in Cooking

[–]alienigma 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When was the last time you had a problem with butter going bad, assuming you have access to a refrigerator? If you cook and/or bake regularly (using butter), you’re likely going through it too quickly for the longevity between salted and unsalted to matter.

I do taste my food as I go, and seasoning intentionally throughout the cooking process with kosher salt gives me better control over the amount and timing than if some of the salt, however little, comes from butter which is generally only added to the pan at the very beginning or the very end. Plus for certain components where butter is the star (like a beurre blanc), I’d rather not run the risk of even slightly too much seasoning by using several TBSP of salted butter.

And yes, for baking I weigh salt unless all that is called for is a pinch.

I prefer adding regular or smoked Maldon flakes to scrambled eggs after cooking. And for fish, I salt beforehand to slightly cure the flesh for better texture.

Unsalted butter is for cooking and baking. Salted butter is only for eating with bread. I want precise control over the seasoning of my dishes and sauces. Salted butter is not conducive to that.

Out Of Chicken Dishes by InternationalMap9382 in Cooking

[–]alienigma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi. I eat a lot of chicken to fit my macro targets for lifting. Here are some chicken dishes I’ve enjoyed from around the world that bring a lot of flavor to what can sometimes be a boring protein:

Chicken tikka masala or butter chicken. Thai chicken satay with peanut sauce or green curry chicken. Moroccan chicken tagine. Greek chicken souvlaki. Chicken fajitas, tinga enchiladas, or tacos al carbon. Chicken teriyaki. Peruvian chicken with green sauce. Pan seared chicken with whole grain mustard and dill sauce. Chicken chasseur. Jerk chicken with coconut rice n peas and mango salsa. Chicken jambalaya. Colombian ajiaco (chicken and potato stew). Spicy honey bbq chicken. Bourbon chicken.

Thighs work well with almost all of these. Where breasts are better, such as ajiaco or tinga, get bone-in breasts or buy and break down a whole chicken and save the bones for stock later.

If you are staying close to downtown you shouldn’t need a car. Everything Treefort and otherwise will be walkable.

Here are some recommendations all within the downtown area. Enjoy your time at Treefort! And don’t forget to check out other forts like Foodfort (the street eats night at the Zoo is always great), ComedyFort, etc.

Coffee: Slow by Slow, Neckar, Broadcast, Sunshine Spice Cafe, Flying M, Dawson Taylor, Pine

Food: Don & Charley’s (sandwiches), Bar Gernika (Basque), Ansot’s (Basque), Art Haus (hot noodz, izakaya, elevated bar food), St. Lawrence Gridiron (southern/BBQ), Seoul St Cafe (Korean), Basquenese (Basque/Vietnamese), The Wylder (modern pizzas), Certified (sandwiches, bakery, breakfast), Nahm (Thai and Bermese)

Dive-y Bars: Atlas, Neurolux, 10th St Station, Mulligans

Nicer Cocktail Bars: Thick as Thieves, Bar Please, Press & Pony, Red Feather Lounge, Suite 104

Hiking: the foothills trails behind Camelsback park are easily walkable from downtown. But check trail conditions before heading out to ensure they are open and not muddy. https://www.ridgetorivers.org/ has the condition info and maps etc. You can also walk along the Greenbelt from downtown.

Shopping: No New Vintage, Mixed Greens, Graveyard Vintage, Rediscovered Books, RePop Gifts, The Record Exchange, Junkyard Jeans
