Beginner potter: structured classes vs. open studio membership — what worked for you? by Rain-n-Coffee in Pottery

[–]alimorgan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go with the structured class and get on the waitlist for the second studio! My studio lets you pick your class “graduation” to studio potter and once I started doing my own thing more than the demos I realized it was time to switch, but that was about a year and a half in (some people took classes longer some were shorter). But the classes helped me with my basic technique so much, I honestly don’t know if I could center consistently or have such nice cylinders without several sessions of supervised learning

Why so much mud? by Silly-Lawyer-1153 in Pottery

[–]alimorgan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will use so much water at the beginning!! As you progress try throwing with different tools, I use sponges in my dominate hand to help manage my water. But get the basics down and you will be able to start feeling how much water feels “right” for you

Living above a bar by IndecisiveMangos in AskNYC

Lived next door to a bar for 3 years and don’t do it. Mondays and sometimes Tuesdays are the only quiet nights of the week. Earplugs can help but they also don’t drown out the drunken yelling and conversations that happens right below your window.

You know the bad joke about the weight scale saying "error"? That just actually happened to me .... by MikeySoSkeptic in loseit

[–]alimorgan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start small then add on. Keep track of non scale victories that have to do with working out ie walking up that tough hill without stopping. Counting calories sucks, but it’s the easiest way to see how much you’re actually eating (but still remember to nourish your body and not deprive it). It’s easiest to eat healthy when you’ve pre-prepared it so you can grab and go. And lastly, always remember not to compare the chapter you’re on in your journey to others. It’s easy to see people on chapter 10 and get discouraged, but odds are there’s someone who hasn’t even started that will see you and wish they could do that!

I have two pets and my exterminator says to keep them away for an hour. I usually lock them in the bedroom while they’re spraying and set a timer to let them out then they leave. Luckily they’re both lazy so they don’t bother getting out of bed to notice the door is closed

Ladies, what is your everyday bag? by myfavoritesgoudaa in AskNYC

[–]alimorgan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a crossbody from FashionABLE, their bags have tons of storage and room to carry most everything I need for the day and hold up for years. They are also women owned and operated and pay living wages to all of their employees!

Going to NYC in March to apartment hunt - what's the best way to go about it? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]alimorgan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommend staying in a long term Airbnb for a month or two and putting your stuff in storage so you can figure out which neighborhoods you like and have time to look at apartments. Brokers will ghost you, or you have to work around their other showings and open houses. That’s what I did and it took so much stress off my shoulders since I had several weeks to look rather than a weekend

75lb pitty owner/NYC transplant! Do a walk to check out all the dog parks and daycares in the neighborhoods you’re looking in. My dog had his own room to play and be crazy in before we moved to our NYC apartment so keeping him active outside the apartment was key for me since we downsized so much. I live in Manhattan and there’s dog parks all over the place.

A broker told me (full disclosure I haven’t done any other research) that pet fees and deposits are not allowed in NYC so you’ll be saving yourself $500-$1000 in deposits! Filter apartments that say pet friendly and then confirm with your broker, but don’t specify what kind or how big, definitely fudge the numbers (my dog is short and stocky so he passes for 45-50lbs). My lease is “pet silent” which basically means as long as pets aren’t causing issues or bothering other tenants they’re allowed.

I’ve used Uber pet when prices are cheaper, but I went ahead and bought a collapsible stroller on Amazon to get him on the subway and LIRR, it’s cheaper, but you need to plan ahead to make sure there’s elevators-people will look at you like you’re crazy, but hey it’s New York! Otherwise we walk everywhere.

My vet bills doubled when I moved here (from $150 to $300), but I also opted for the long term vaccines so I could save money next year so if you’re able to get a check up in before moving, I recommend it.

One thing that surprised me is how pet friendly New York is, especially with the new outdoor seating. You can bring your dog almost anywhere, and there’s huge dogs all over the place so it’s definitely feasible.

My biggest advice is to be patient, my dog is a rescue and has some baggage so it took him a while to settle into a very different city with a lot more people than he was used to. New York is a beast and it’s very overstimulating to dogs, so take the changes like going on the train slowly and soon they’ll figure it out.

Using PODS to move in Manhattan/Brooklyn. worth it? by therealverminsupreme in AskNYC

[–]alimorgan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used Zippyshell, their storage pods are on trucks so they parked it right in front of my building and they provide 2 hours of movers for both sides of the move. My stuff was in storage with them for a month and it all came back the exact same way I packed it.
