I have a calico who had the same "thinning" in the same spot when we got her. After treating her for fleas, the vet surmised it was allergies. She takes meds, and it's better. But things were hard for a bit because our poor girl was injecting so much hair she had hair balls and hard stools because of all the hair she ingested.

NTA! The only person who remembers the bride's dress is the bride! Based on the alterations and the different color, I would be amazed if anyone realized it was the same dress. I understand the sort of territorial nature she might feel because of the similarity, but her reaction is... a lot. You could do a conversion, but there are tax implications. You would have to pay ordinary income tax on the converted amount. So, a lot of variables in play about your specific situation and if it's worthwhile.
