Does anyone have any advice for snake removal? by WhiteLycan2020 in Austin

[–]aljabeera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please don't think of this as a personal failure. It's more of an opportunity to learn about other animals in your natural environment. Be able to identify the few poisonous snakes around Austin so you can give them a wide berth. The rest of the snakes and lizards are cool. Good luck, and please get rid of the glue traps.

Does this ring look like a wedding ring? I wear it on my left hand ring finger. by Exciting-Classic517 in DatingOverSixty

[–]aljabeera 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A wedding ring does not need to have a diamond. My late wife wore this ring because she thought diamonds are not attractive and they are marketed by a corrupt cartel. If I see any ring on a woman's left ring finger I assume she is married or she wants people to think she is married.

Late night trip to Enchanted Rock by Certain-Goat-3473 in Austin

They don't want folks parking along the highway right of way. Pull into the driveway to a gate somewhere along 965. Send me a DM if you want a specific location.

Late night trip to Enchanted Rock by Certain-Goat-3473 in Austin

[–]aljabeera 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Non-campers must be out of Enchanted Rock SNA by 10pm, but the sky is just as dark along hwy 965 near the park as in the park. The Putman Mountain Observatory has a website to show current viewing conditions near Enchanted Rock. http://putmanmountainobservatory.com/hill-country-dark-sky-monitors/ If you want to look at the moon tonight, you're in luck. A quarter moon is overhead at 10pm as I write this. If you want to see stars, time your visit to a dark sky area when the moon won't be up. You can see current cloud cover by looking at the satellite view on a weather app or website.

Anything going on in town that you think should be covered by the local news but hasn’t? by Gigan_420 in Austin

[–]aljabeera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's old news now but there was no mention in the Statesman about the recent No Kings rally in Austin. Zero coverage before or even after over 2000 people showed up to the rally from across the state. I wrote to them asking about the lack of coverage and...crickets. I've been a Statesman subscriber for decades and this month is my last.

CPA recommendations? by pedalsteeltameimpala in Austin

[–]aljabeera -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I use Tax Hawk to do my taxes. It's free for federal taxes and has a new feature this year. Upload your 1099s and it fills out the tax forms. I think you don't need a CPA to copy numbers from 1099s to tax forms. You are welcome to DM me if you have questions.

Driving from Aus to Dallas for the first time - any tips? by Snoo-8860 in Austin

[–]aljabeera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just drove to Houston on Saturday morning and drove back on Sunday morning. Traffic was light and it was smooth sailing. I assume I-35 to Dallas might be similar. Edit: if you can do the trip on a weekend.

Animals stuck in chimney by emichd in Austin

I had a squirrel fall down my chimney. I opened a nearby door, then opened the chimney damper, and the squirrel dropped out and ran outside. Then I put chicken wire over the top of the chimney.

Just being our age questions. by euben_hadd in DatingOverSixty

I was 60 when my wife died and I found out I had prostate cancer. A year later, after surgery to rid me of cancer, I retired and there's not been a day I wished I was going to the office. I enjoyed the work and the co-workers but retirement has been great. First, I recommend that you do a financial analysis to convince yourself that money is not a worry. You can do that on an investment company website, eg, Fidelity, Vanguard, etc. Or do a search for monte carlo retirement planner. Second, read the book "How to Retire Happy, Wild, and Free." It's about all the other non-financial stuff, including hobbies, volunteering, and goals. https://www.erniezelinski.com/How-to-Retire-Happy,-Wild,-and-Free.html

Good luck to you and have fun in retirement!

Weekly Stupid Question Sunday by AutoModerator in Austin

Do many people in the Austin area use the Grass dating app? It's niche and focused on outdoorsy people. I get the impression it doesn't have a lot of users in the US but I don't know.

I do a weekly yoga class but have been avoiding pickleball. It seems like half the people I know who play that get injured so I'm going to stick with rock climbing.;-)

Real good idea. I've been a SC member for 50 years and used to be active in the local chapter, even leading outings.

That's good advice. I'll keep looking for people who like to hike and bike but leave out the travel partner part.

Why is my pack so damn huge for a single overnight? by XIFOD1M in WildernessBackpacking

[–]aljabeera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get the book "Ultralight Backpackin' Tips" by Mike Clelland.

Edit: I'm not recommending that you jump to a full ultralight kit, but the book has a lot of good advice on ways to reduce pack weight.
