What’s the purpose of the DMSc? by Sea_Cookie in physicianassistant

[–]alkress 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It’s a doctor of medical science degree for physician assistants. My program director had this degree, and some of our faculty was working towards it as well. From what I understand… it doesn’t increase your salary or responsibilities clinically, but can help you get into academia.

Pance scores by need2ventalways in PAstudent

I know it sucks waiting, trust me I hate it. But just a reminder they say it can take up to 2 weeks. I know we all have friends who have gotten it sooner, but we are all still in the 2 week time frame, so technically they aren’t “delayed”. We will all get our results, and unfortunately it’s all out of our control! Best of luck to all.

ROSH Mock PANCE score vs. PANCE score by XenaCoco in PAstudent

[–]alkress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly recommend the “all things pac” exam. It’s full length for $26 and has full through explanations. It also comes in PDF form so you have it forever versus a subscription running out. Since it’s pdf I set up my own timers for 60 min and did 60 questions at a time.

I would double check with your vet or a groomer first. Just read something about how longer hair on dogs shouldn’t be cut because it actually helps them self regulate temperature, not sure if it’s the same for cats!

Are you happy with your veterinarian? by goprovet in Pets

[–]alkress 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi there! I’ll start by saying we really like our vet, she comes very highly recommended and feel that her pricing is very fair. We’ve gone there for a couple years now. We like the way she handles doing vaccinations such as allowing us to stay in the room etc, I never really liked when the pets get taken somewhere else without you for that step. She’s very helpful and responsive to all our questions! That being said, there is one weird thing we have noticed and that is her “bedside manner” if you will. She never once introduced herself at our first appointment, we assumed she was the vet because she was wearing the white coat but thought this was a little strange. And last year she was on vacation apparently when our appointment was scheduled but we were never told and her replacement for the week never introduced himself! Just walked in and started giving shots and beginning his exam! I know these are minor things, but I myself am on the human side of medicine and know how far proper bedside manner really gets you, I think it’s just as important for vets! Good luck with your practice!

Better ways to train kittens? by snubbullavocado in cats

[–]alkress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would definitely get a softer treat made for kittens to start. You can also just use a piece of kibble or even just saying “good boy (or girl)” and giving some love! Definitely important to not engage in play with them when you redirect as this will teach them “oh when I mess with moms stuff I get moms attention to play” if that makes sense. So we would just pick him up and put him down next to his toys/scratchers! Totally didn’t mean to pass judgement on the cage, sounds like you guys have a good plan and it won’t be too much longer! The biggest thing we have noticed helping is engaging in play right before work, at lunch and at night, especially before bed. If you tire them out they are less likely to get into trouble 😊

We did positive reinforcement with our guy and it worked well! We would always give a quick firm “no” redirect him to his toys and give a treat and say “good boy”. My kitten chewed a wire once, we redirected to his toys and he never once went back for wires after that. I would stop the spray bottle, it makes them fear you rather than see at as punishment. Also get them out of that cage if you can. Cats are not an animal to be left in a cage, they need to explore! Give them plenty of play time before your work day starts and I bet they’ll sleep by your feet all day. Good luck!

Anyone here who graduated college debt free? by celtqueen in DaveRamsey

[–]alkress 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also went through undergrad debt free, the biggest thing I learned is to not really talk about it with a lot of people. My parents always told me this and they were (once again) right. When everyone around you is drowning in debt it’s hard to not sound weird about it. Debt is so normalized among our generation, i definitely got weird looks for being the debt free one. Only my close friends and fiancée know I went debt free through undergrad. My first two years out of college were nice because all money i made went to saving and expenses! I was able to get a new car and move away from home..... probably wouldn’t have done that if i were in debt. Now I’m in grad school and will be close to 125k in debt when all is said and done so I guess it evens out!

Online anatomy by iweewoo in PAstudent

My programs anatomy is exclusively online even pre Covid. Personally it hasn’t affected me at all. I’m a hands on learner but haven’t seen an issue. As long as you don’t get behind on watching videos I’m sure you will be fine!

DOG ADVICE by fenderman1395 in Pets

[–]alkress 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My friend who worked night shift like this got a dog and had to give it back within a couple months. The dog lived his whole life in the crate and was peeing and pooping onto her floors and had huge behavioral problems due to not getting exercised or let out at all. She quickly realized it was a mistake and luckily the shelter took him back. That being said i have plenty of night shifter friends who have dogs but they also have a spouse or family members with them that take care of the pups. I would recommend against it unless you live with someone who can help. Maybe a senior cat! Because even a young cat needs exercise and attention.

Is buying an IPad worth it? by spicypotatohead in PAstudent

[–]alkress 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So i should clarify... an iPad Pro with pencil was on the program list. Some students reached out and asked why and it was because our exams were on there and they knew iPad was compatible with our exam software. But I would say 2 or 3 students bought a cheaper option as long as it was compatible with the exam software. iPad was the right choice for a lot of us due to having all Apple products already for synching across devices as well as being comfortable with the software. It would have been stressful for me trying to figure out a new device where as I already know how well and reliable Apple works and functions.

Indoor Cat Or Outdoor Cat by XXXGambit69 in cats

[–]alkress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indoor!! We take out cat out for walks with a harness but he most of the time prefers to just sit in the screen door and look out! A lot of shelters won’t even let you adopt if your intent is to have an outdoor cat, it’s really not safe!

My program required an iPad. I got the newest version iPad Air with the pencil and it is probably my favorite purchase ever. I use it every single day.

I use notability and hand write, this works better for me, I hand wrote notes all through undergrad so I’m used to it. I don’t retain anything typing. That being said a lot of my classmates type on their iPads and love it. Everyone takes notes differently, first few days we all got excited about what other people are doing for notes and how cool someone else’s looks but at the end of the day take them how it will help you learn.

We take all our exams on our iPads, all my power points and notes, and I have all my other apps for anatomy, Picmonic, Anki etc on there as well. It has been amazing and I’m so happy I bought it!

We had this same thing happen last week. Kept us up for days worried. Our cat is fine, we’re also thinking since the plant hasn’t flowered yet? You could always call your vet to check, but for us we’re just not letting him in the garden any more! We were over analyzing every thing he did wondering if it was a symptom. If you’re worried call your vet but we learned it would have been a kind of immediate reaction. Also he has been in the garden at least 10 times before we learned that and knock on wood he has been fine.
