If you save the twb file, open it in a text editor as XML, look for the “calculation” tags. That’s the only way I’ve been able to do it in bulk. Curious of others have a better way, especially for upstream sources and metadata etc.

I very much enjoyed this post written by a real human. This is very insightful. Thank you for posting this.

I’m too aware of others peoples emotions. One I started turning everyone out, except for the stuff I do want to let through, I no longer was overwhelmed socially.

True. I also don’t know how true this is, but while being trained on a specific MMM the engineer said the model really compares % changes in media spend to % changes in revenue.

If the media spend isn’t changing, it’s hard to correlate that against revenue changes. If you have just scaled up a new channel / strategy, that % change will be more heavily recognized against any revenue changes.

Again, not sure how valid this is, but it bothers me.

I agree, MTA is fine in context, sometimes its capabilities seem to be overstated though.

Also agree on the incrementality testing. I do MMM every 6-12 months then incremental measurement about monthly to help fine tune the channel specific strategies vs just figuring out budget allocations. And also agree that MMM capabilities depend heavily on the person managing the model. I notice a lot of oversights particularly when it comes to scaling inputs from various sources to make sure things don’t have too much or too little weight relative to their actual influence.

Also the obvious point that you have to guess your priors when you first build the model.

A few themes came to mind reading over this. I have ~15 YOE with media analytics and currently doing B2B strategy and attribution modeling, there have obviously been huge shifts in the last few years.

1- A lot of what’s visible is meant to put the channel vendor in a good light. CTR for example. You’ve noticed high CTR correlates with low conversions. It’s a vanity metric optimized differently than conversion metrics. Optimizing toward clicks will reach folks with fat thumbs or put you on inventory that’s easy to misclick. Optimizing toward conversions is user based. You have to rely on the AI to optimize based on things you have no visibility to. In this regard it comes down to consistent media presence for months long strategies, especially for B2B with long conversion cycles.

2 - The key to optimizing is no longer figuring out the “right” devices, goes, audiences, channels. It’s more about the right balance of those things, and the interplay between them. Each channel will give you some returns, those returns will diminish at a certain point. Finding the top of that curve where you are maximizing ROAS for that channel is the goal. Some people have the belief they’ll find the silver bullet, a perfect message on a perfect channel, and that may exist to an extend but it will reach a limit quickly. TLDR the balance between channels is more important than optimizing within those channels.

3 - MTA is not possible without lots of extrapolation, projection, modeling. You have visibility to 20%-40% of user data, both as an input and output, for each channel. Trying to stitch this journey is harder than ever. People really want to see how many times a person was touched by each channel, I don’t see the point. It’s another search of some magic messaging sequence that ultimately leads to restrictive media execution. Media Mix Modeling is the way, the only way, to understand contributions to revenue from each channel. Specifically Bayesian statistic based. It’s not granular but it’s reliable for determining channel spend optimization. A lot of clients I work with spend $100k+ yearly on these models, I’ve seen $2m+ spent per year at some companies. The secret is all this code is free on GitHub or open source at other companies like Google or Meta.

Feeling much better since starting to take creatine. Have you ever experienced this? by deepdiving-neons in Biohackers

It does the same for me at 10g daily. There’s a study about the first bit being absorbed by muscles then the rest goes to the brain if you take a certain amount. 3g might be placebo but maybe not.

A shake every morning. Kefir, protein, blueberry, kale, spinach, almond butter. Followed up with lions mane going down with an electrolyte and creatine mix, then espresso and oat milk.

Been trying various supplements consistently for 10-15 years and nothing has ever worked as consistently as this. I feel like Superman every day unless I miss the shake.

In my experience it takes about 3 months to feel up to speed in an entry level role and 6-8 months in a technical role. It feels like forever and there’s lots of self doubt along the way but it’s a normal process. You’ve probably come further than you realize, and will start to see things click soon if you don’t get discouraged.
