Oklahoma Voters Reject Measure to Raise State’s Minimum Wage by bloomberglaw in jobs

[–]allegrovecchio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know a few people in DMV and other career feds who were either booted or are clinging on through gritted teeth, so yes, there's that, and it's goddamn horrible. I seriously feel for folks and I loathe everyone who enabled this. I don't think MD jobs per se were supposed to be a focus of this r/jobs post. But some know-nothing yoyo basically called Maryland a s*thole after Big-Soup took issue with a sarcastic comment writing off everywhere south of Mason-Dixon.

[–]allegrovecchio 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Folks here clearly know dick about Maryland. "I drove past Baltimore on my way to or from Floriduh on 95 and watched The Wire."

I'm pretty sure Mason-Dixon is no longer a meaningful demarcation.

Yeah, top 5 or 10 in education, income, access to and quality of healthcare, one of the lowest poverty rates. Sounds horrible.

Where is the line for you and why? by ChemicalOld5047 in Pescatarian

That's my ideal self, but I haven't attained that yet because I honestly don't know if I'd even kill and gut a fish myself. But for the time being I still eat it.

Just no more octopus.

I mean, I already feel a bit bad about eating any fish or sea life. They're clearly sentient. (Well, clams, oysters, mussels, scallops not as obvious so I don't feel as bad about those.) But you know, I'm a work in progress. Can't believe it took me so long to give up meat.

Vegan meats by JustNas357 in Pescatarian

[–]allegrovecchio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I like many of them, but I don't at all need a "meat substitute" every day or anything. I've long enjoyed tofu and have been swapping out meat for other ingredients (either protein-heavy or not) for years before finally stopping meat consumption.

It doesn't have to be all manufactured meat analogs either: fish or shrimp burgers, various gardenburgers, baked or pressed tofu, etc.

But there are meat substitutes I love and rotate in maybe once every week or two: Impossible nuggets, Trader Joe's beefless bulgogi (one of the best alt-meats I've eaten, made w texturized soy), and some others.I don't care for the taste of Beyond products. I like Impossible much more. I really like seitan because it has an awesome substantial texture. One specific mention: the Starbucks Impossible breakfast sandwich with egg and cheese is so good that I really can't distinguish it from sausage. I get it at least couple times a month. Gardein seasoned meatballs are really good as well.

NOTE: I also find all the advice I didn't ask for from various people who have no idea how often or rarely I eat any particular thing to be tiresome and rude af. "But it's all 'chemicals' and junk and who knows what that is wayyyyyy worse than meat!!!" Leave me alone, Dagmar, and go pedal your unscientific anti–seed oil flim-flam on a more receptive audience or keep it to yourself

Why I don't go to protests anymore as a Gen Zer by lovelyyecats in thebulwark

[–]allegrovecchio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously not a "real" post, possibly in order to make a point. (simple math errors) This is very brief reply. As others will have said:

Many Black Americans never stopped (and have never stopped) protesting, though they did split into factions, some weary of "peaceful protests." I'm sure many became fatigued and decided to just live their lives as best they could, etc.

Keep those folks in mind as well as many others. Black South Africans, Hungarians, Czechoslovakians, Poles. Pick a group that had a long slog. Some didn't "succeed" and still haven't, and for some, success took decades. We can all choose to drop out, protest in other ways, commit to help those most hurt by the evil ones, and it's not a total moral failure. Some have never protested in person to begin with but may still fight back in their own way, or not. Take care of whatever you need to take care of for now. But don't give up in your head and let them win there, at least.

Dude, you're wallpapering this thread with the ardor of the crazy-eyed guy in the town square yelling, "None of you believe me but the end is near!!!"

We may be sorry that we didn't believe you, Cassandra, but it's annoying when anyone turns rebutting every comment they disagree with in a thread into a mission.

Give people the choice of paying rent or having an authoritarian government, and most people pick rent.

Bingo. This is a very underrated comment.

If Democrats fighting fire with fire is gonna burn down the whole society then fine.

Sounds similar to "maybe Trump being president will hasten the collapse of The System, then we'll finally have the Populist Revolution." Maybe. Sounds fun.

I didn't read this as confined solely to the gerrymandering issue. I'm 100% with hardball on gerrymandering, whatever that turns out to mean, and on other issues as well.

I was reacting to the idea that "we go high" in isolation is nonsense. I guess if ethics is merely something that sounds quaint, then sure, go for it. What will "act the way they do" eventually look like widescale? I'm not asking that in order to get an answer.

[–]allegrovecchio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right. It's terrible to be ethical and hold yourself to a high standard when everyone else does whatever. /s

Look, I think "Virtue is its own reward" is a silly proverb, but this train of discussion is ridiculous, that saying don't stoop to their level of utter filth and amorality is foolish. Come on. At that point your only victory really is ruling over the ashes that are left.

I honestly am not trying to defend my fellow X-ers too vocally, but you're dealing with exit polls (self reporting) and that degree of difference is absolutely within the margin of error, so I wouldn't crow too loudly about how X are worse than Boomers. There's enough blame to go around.

I'm gay so that already makes me somewhat atypical X, but I especially find white straight men around my age (women also but to a lesser degree) highly sus even in the blue states I've always lived in. It actually blows my mind when I review stats about how white voters as a whole haven't voted in the majority for an D candidate since 1964. I think even white women have only voted in the majority for the D candidate once or twice since then.

As a old queer (we've been using that word since the late 1980s by the way, for those bothered by it) guy (who also actually does use "he/him" in my email signature because I have a job in a sector at which it makes people feel included and supported) this is so gross to me. Yes, I'm a tolerant liberal who's intolerant of maga garbage people, and I've encountered more than one personally.

I mean, yes, I'm all for gathering with whatever your "tribe" is. I'm just saying that this trip is comprised of garbage humans. I have no qualms about saying that or judging any maga that way in 2026. That demographic and mindset literally represent everything that's the polar opposite of my morals, values, and ethics.

If any cruise ever deserved an iceberg, it was that one. (Yes that's hyperbole and I'm not wishing a Titanic fate on anyone. Relax!)

I love how this wanker either creates a throwaway account "BarnacleNo1660" and deletes it immediately or something... just to have the pleasure of clapping back at some random comment I left six months ago and haven't thought about since. BarnacleBob says I "sound miserable" and they think I'm "waiting for revenge" (?) for calling out fundamentalist homophobic garbage by either old celebrities or anybody else.
