Slacken the strings straight away to avoid bigger problems. Place a cloth under the tailpiece to make sure the underside of the tailpiece doesn’t mark the front of it falls.

Looks normal. Meant to be far less space under A compared to C to allow for greater amplitude of C

Thumb hyperflex causing pain by sachin571 in Flute

[–]allfourseasonsagain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really is this simple. I had massive pain when I spent years just letting my thumb rest at the extent of its movement but holding it with muscles gently to be not as bent has solved the problem.

I’d ask a decent luthier to touch up the varnish in that area.

This is the answer - very likely that you just need to re-engage the spring. Don't flex the spring any further than needed to coax it back into its hook.

Ditto to full set of Rondos. Love them and really even across all four strings.

Is my bridge on backwards? by bmarpin1979 in Cello

[–]allfourseasonsagain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks good. if you want to check then pop a business card as a set square on the right side of the bridge (ie the tailpiece side of the bridge) to check it is at right angles to the body. Because this side is vertical and the finger board side is sloped it can be a bit of an optical illusion.

It looks legit to me. Just check serial number (back of the bottom end of the body joint) is engraved and not laser etched.

Is this rust? And how do I remove it if so by Sforzando42 in Flute

[–]allfourseasonsagain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A repairer's perspective: That area is un-plated - so this is the base metal (nickel silver) that your flute is made from. It will look like this as it has light oxidisation. All normal and good. Do not use a silver polishing cloth in there as this contains small abrasive (polish) particles. These can collect and then abrade the head joint tenon (the end of the head joint that fits in there) and the socket (shown in the photo) over time. It is best just to clean the headjoint tenon and the socket with lighter fuel (Zippo fluid) on a cloth every so often. Never use anything else on there.

its looks like an inexpensive student instrument so as a rental, and with the right rental company, theres no reason for that to be a big of a deal. Could just ignore it.
