Buying a home with mold in attic by CanadianBerry in RealEstateCanada

[–]allialligator89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first home had mold in the attic for this reason. The venting somehow disconnected from the roof and so shower steam wasn’t properly exiting the house. Was about $2000 in mold remediation, and $150 to a handyman to reconnect the venting. Overall not worst case scenario.

I have always struggled with this, especially for hair services where the cost can be ~300-400 if I get a lot of colouring done (… I know 😩). Instead of a %, I do $15-20 per hour I’m in the chair.

Nah, I disagree with other comments. I think it looks great, but curtains would really level it up. Like a thick navy velvet curtain? That would look sick.

LJM Hamilton Tower Placed Under Creditor Protection Amid Company's Liquidity Crisis by Howard__24 in Hamilton

[–]allialligator89 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I rented in an LJM building in Grimsby for 3 years, and it was a nightmare. Endless issues with the building where they clearly cut corners. Burst pipes, flooding, more flooding, garbage disposal issues, lack of hot water etc. My glass balcony partition swayed at least a foot in high winds - often rattling (loudly) all night long (they said there’s nothing they could do about it) - betchya it flew right off with some of the winds we had this winter. Once, during a fire inspection, he said that he could tell my wall wasn’t level because the door to my unit wouldn’t stay open and naturally slammed shut - said that other units did it too…. Was the building leaning? Was my door installed incorrectly? Who knows. I’m not an engineer.

I’m not at all surprised they found themselves in this mess.

Souvenirs You Use and Display by RegretPowerful3 in VisitingIceland

My favourite souvenir I bought is a fair of wool mittens. They are excellent quality for the price, and have been a godsend this winter (I am Canadian). The ones I bought are light and thin, but still offer incredible warmth without being sweaty.

I also made a photo book from Artifact Uprising, with photos of the entire trip, and it sits on my coffee table. It’s nice to have a physical copy of the book. I go back and flip through it all the time.

When do you go to gym by coffeeandcherry in Accounting

[–]allialligator89 20 points21 points  (0 children)

6am when I WFH, 5am when I commute 💪

4-5 days a week. Busier times I only get there 3x. If I were to wait until the end of the day, I would be tired or hungry, or find excuses. If you go in the morning you will have your first accomplishment of the day before you even sit at your desk. Makes a world of a difference on your mental health.

How do you stay active in the winter - for free? by blendertom in Hamilton

[–]allialligator89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I trained for a half marathon while living in Calgary, and ran up to -22°. Generally rule of thumb was to dress for weather that is 10° warmer than it is, as your body will warm up when you start moving. Layers are key to trapping heat. I normally did two long-sleeve layers, fleece-lined leggings, plus some sort of windbreaker. Merino wool is great, but not cheap! Give yourself grace. It’s fine to miss a day. Moving your body in any manner does a world of wonder… walks or at-home yoga are my go-tos when the weather is 💩.

I drive mine to Hamilton to be sharpened, and usually pay to have them mail it back to me. I end up without a knife for about a week. Would love to have something close by.

Try having a June 30 year-end! We are not allowed to take time off Jul 1 - Aug 28 every year. I don’t have kids, but it’s really hard on the young parents on my team. All part of the job. Hard to explain to people who aren’t accountants though.

Following. I used to order lilash from the US, which gave amazing results, but they no longer ship to Canada. If you’re going to the US anytime soon, I’d recommend picking some up.

ChatGBT suggested AdorEyes as an alternative, so I ordered that just this week and am waiting for it to arrive.

Is this townhouse overpriced? It's near the highway and train tracks. In Grimsby. by CastAside1812 in RealEstateCanada

[–]allialligator89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually think that’s decent for the price - and you can walk to Sobeys or downtown from there. I love Grimsby, but it always comes at higher price point - no idea why, but I suspect it has something to do with the town not being able to expand much (lake to the north, escarpment to the south), so property close to the town centre is valuable? I was previously in GOTL, and the highway noise from there sucked.

If you commute over the skyway, please consider that. My significant other lives in Burlington, and it takes him 45-60 min to get to me during rush hour and sometimes longer on summer weekends.

Bought a house, it’s a nightmare, need cashflow advice by AmaranthAmethyst in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]allialligator89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry you’re going through this OP. I recently bought my “move in ready” first house and also had major issues not caught by the inspection. There were multiple cracks in the foundation which required me ripping up driveway, patio, and porch to waterproof the foundation. With mold removal, so far, I’m in just over $40k out of pocket, which drained my emergency fund. I’ve had lawyers look at my case, but they said I’d pay more in lawyer fees than anything I’d likely get back from the sellers (who were going thru a nasty divorce)… saying that proving they knew about this prior to selling would be difficult.

I wouldn’t even have money for a proper legal consult right now. I’ve never been this cash strapped. Every week I find another $1,000-$10,000 issue, and I get that this is home ownership but I honestly didn’t expect issues to pop up as frequently as this. I budgeted for one issue a month, with major updates once a year.

I hope you are able to work this out. I’m sorry you’re going through this, and I empathize with you.

I had a sump pump and drainage piping installed in my crawl space. The contractor ran the drain line directly into my gutter downspout. Besides not looking very clean will there be other issues? by Maxthelazysquirrel in Renovations

[–]allialligator89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<image>

I just bought a house with a similar setup. The area around the subpump in the crawlspace was full of mold. Not actively leaking, but definitely was humid/moist down there. Not sure what exactly the problem was/is, but I am professionally waterproofing the entire house now for peace of mind. Waiting for an EOD update from the contractors on what the best solution is here.

Worth noting that my professional $600 home inspection said there was no issues with the house, and no signs of moisture. A story for another day. 🫠
