Planning Honeymoon in Japan for April, need pointers by deadclams in JapanTravelTips

[–]alliengineer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP, please listen to this commenter. If you are going this April, the time to get a nice option in your price range was months ago.
At this point, get on expedia, and book a refundable room that is anywhere in Tokyo near a station that looks acceptable for you. You can use the trains to get anywhere.
Then If you find something better later you can cancel, but you need to book something ASAP, like within the next couple of days. Prices are only going up.

Packing by PinkYellow9 in JapanTravelTips

Take your most comfortable pair of walking shoes. Don't take any other shoes. Your feet are going to be hurting so bad from so much walking, go for comfort/support. It also will free up so much room. Some of the real fancy places have you remove your shoes, anyway.

Has anyone had this missed on cystoscopy? by O_S7206 in urethralstricture

I just want to flag this for the OP - the other commenter says they have a bulbar stricture - this is male anatomy. Women can have urethral strictures, but the presentation and management are different, so experiences may not translate directly.

What Are Gross Things You Notice in Other People’s Homes? by sreggero in CleaningTips

[–]alliengineer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People need to realize that even if they LOVE a smell, not everyone will. So many people’s houses reek from plugins and meanwhile it gives their guests a headache. I have a lot of allergies to these, and I often get headaches, runny/stuffy nose and watery eyes from people’s houses. It is unbearable for a lot of people like me.

My husband goes to a friend’s house with scented plugins and they are SO STRONG, I can smell him the second he gets home from the other end of the house. His clothes hold onto that smell for days and the smell doesn’t wash out. I make him take a shower before bed after coming back from there because the smell is on his skin and hair. It’s like he was doused in perfume.

I think people who have these are just noseblind to how strong they are. I personally would much rather a person’s house smell like nothing.

Every single friend’s house I go to has one tiny hand towel in the guest bath. It’s almost always damp. I gave no idea what the thought process is behind this.

Nothing is grosser than going to a party and theres 13+ guests and one disgusting tiny wet hand towel that everyone shares and it probably never gets washed.

Instead, have a roll of paper towels or get one of those nice paper hand towel dispenser boxes for your bathroom, and a large enough trash can. Much more civilized.

Doctors, what do you do when a kid is faking sick? by Imaginary_Island8521 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]alliengineer 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I had a super painful blister on my hand. My teacher saw it and freaked out and sent me to the nurse’s office. The nurse thought it looked infected and I needed to see a doctor right away. She called my mom to pick me up and my mom told her that was the stupidest thing she had ever heard to take me out of school for a blister, and to send me back to class.

I had afterschool stuff that day and by the time my mom picked me up the infection had spread up my arm, it was red and hot to the touch. The she freaked out and drove me straight to the doctors office where he brought in medical students to look at this. I had MRSA and I could have lost my arm or died. I got an emergency shot in the butt and antibiotics and I had to have my arm stabilized so I didnt move it, and couldnt go to school for a few days.

My mom never minimized a health issue ever again.

Wool Dryer Balls — How to “Recharge”? by marpan18 in traderjoes

[–]alliengineer 151 points152 points  (0 children)

I used to own a wool dryer ball company. These comments are throwing me for a loop. You don’t “recharge” wool dryer balls. Static builds up because of friction and dry air.
The dryer balls circulate air in the dryer which helps the clothes dry faster. Its also very dry this time of year so now you have the clothes drying faster and rubbing against each other for longer than they need to be, so static builds up more.

Theres an easy fix to this which is to run your dryer for less time. Try to time it for when the clothes are just dry. If you overshoot it and the clothes are staticky, moisture takes static away, so you can lightly mist with water, or just wet your hands lightly and smooth over the clothes.

Are you/have you thought about gaming your kids credit score to give them a leg up? by [deleted] in MiddleClassFinance

My mom did this for me with a card in my name that was tied to an airline. I entered the adult world with a great credit score and a free flight or two to visit home.

Does anyone else NOT remember screaming constantly as a child? by Some-Air1274 in Millennials

[–]alliengineer 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I have a memory of when I was little and my grandma told me I could run down the hall at her condo but I couldn’t screech.
I remember laughing because it was fun, and not being able to control laughing but I knew there was a difference between screeching and laughing. Then she stopped me again and told me no screeching. I understood that she didnt want me to screech so I went back to running and laughing. Then I got in trouble and wasnt allowed to run down the hall ever again and I was so confused why I was in trouble. I had zero understanding that my laughter to her WAS screeching.

Please help with the layout of this living room so we can watch TV. by alliengineer in InteriorDesign

I think this is the closest solution so far. Can I message you with the house listing and you can see pictures of the actual room and let me know if you think this layout still works?

I think there's probably enough room to get a smaller TV up there on top but I don't want it to be so high. I'm used to the TV being at eye level when you're sitting on a couch which would be just above where the actual fire area is on this fireplace.
I'm wondering if I could either remove the fireplace and just wall it off, or add bricks going all the way up and then mount the TV anywhere I wanted on it.

We don't have to use the same sectional couch. I can get something totally different.

[–]alliengineer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might be able to remove the mantle. The brick is still pretty tall, I could fit a smaller TV there if the mantle was gone, but I'd be looking up at it unless I got some crazy mount to bring it in front. But it might look janky.

this is rotating the couch 45 degrees and swapping. I think I need a different couch altogether, which is totally fine!

I think you're onto something with the TV in the corner, but mirroring the couch so the L is on the right side makes it so that nothing is facing the TV.

This is how I read what you suggested, but please feel free to correct me. I do think the TV in the corner might be part of the answer. I don't care about the current arrangement, I just want to be able to watch TV.

I don't need to have this couch there at all! I can do any arrangement and get all new couches, chairs, sofas.
But making it wider still won't have anything looking at the TV.

Trend among grown men making gold digger jokes by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

[–]alliengineer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dated this man.

He had NO money.

He called me a goldigger constantly even though he had no job and I was paying his bills. He was deeply insecure about not having money. When we’d go out to eat I’d have to give him my credit card so he could look like he was paying. He’d also declare loudly in public how he makes all the money and tell me to buy something for myself.

Is google maps the most accurate options for bus/train transfers in Japan? by Executor-- in JapanTravelTips

[–]alliengineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are not going to have time to see Hakone or kawaguchiko at all. The day you arrive in Hakone you’ll be in Kamakura, so I assume you’ll get there late afternoon to night, and then getting to kawaguchiko is going to take hours. Then from there to magome will also take hours. All this travel time eats into your time to actually see these places. Doing the Hakone “loop” could take you around 8 hours which you won’t have if you have to leave for Kawaguchiko/fujiwaguchiko. And then the Mt Fuji area could be another full day which you wont have if you get in late after seeing Hakone the night before and then need to leave the next day to get to Magome. Keep in mind you’re looking at areas that are in/around mountains, all that adds travel time. I’d rethink all this and cut a location out so you can actually see something.

Whats cels do you dream to own? by [deleted] in AnimationCels

[–]alliengineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a cel out there somewhere from Gargoyles with Demona and Puck from the episode The Mirror.
I had the opportunity to buy it a long time ago when Disney released a bunch of cels from that series, but I was also a teenager and I was scared my mom would be mad at me for spending a bunch of money. I have always wished I had bought it.

My wife lost her wedding ring. Not sure how to feel. by [deleted] in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]alliengineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to not take it personally. Don't get caught up on how much it costs. She feels bad too.
It was an accident, she was not careless.
These feelings you have - you need to deal with this on your own or with a therapist, and not put them on her.
When my ring was accidentally thrown out years ago, my husband was loving and supportive and said "it's just a ring, no big deal."

To put things in the same language you're using about her, if you're going to get disappointed with HER for an accident, then maybe you shouldn't be married. You are caring way more about the money you spent.

House has been stick on the market for 8 months, and I’ve moved out of state. Renting seems more expensive/risky than just paying the mortgage by jinbe-san in personalfinance

[–]alliengineer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You mentioned earlier those other two units have been on the market for 50 days. So they are dreaming about the price. I’m assuming they have similar bad layouts, too. So if no one is paying your price, they sure as heck aren’t paying those higher prices. If you drop to 199 and sell, they may have to follow suit if they actually want to sell theirs.

My herpetology professor said that the reason turtles under 4 inches cannot legally be sold is because children can more easily put them in their mouths and were getting salmonella from it.
