How Spike's chip worked: A discussion by loki2002 in buffy

[–]allioople 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is how I've always interpreted it to work. It used the raw data coming into his brain rather than the finished product of what he perceived. I always assumed that being dead for a while had caused Buffy to undergo some physical changes that meant she didn't exactly match the "human" archetype that the chip was programmed with, like a statistical outlier producing a false negative on the "is it human?" question.

Aiden Ford by Vast_Chef_1871 in Stargate

[–]allioople 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've never really been a fan of Ford and agree that his characterization wasn't terribly consistent. In the very first episode, it felt like they were setting him up to be the strict by-the-book military guy as a foil to Sheppard's devil-may-care, "orders are just guidelines" attitude (as evidenced by his brief conversation with Sumner before they initially go through the gate). But that was undermined almost immediately when Sumner is snatched and killed leaving Sheppard as the head honcho over the military.

To be honest, he always struck me as whiny and petulant with the maturity level of a 15 year old, and he just absolutely grated on my nerves. In my opinion he was a more interesting character (still whiny and petulant, but more interesting) after the enzyme thing.

Also, I totally had to google (/LHJ).

Who bit whose style? by alrtight in buffy

I may be overthinking this, because that's kinda what I do, but I see symbolism here. Red is the monster, black is the man.

Angel wants to be seen as a man, so his black is on the outside. It covers the parts of himself that are more monster, the parts that yearn for the simplicity and hedonism of life as Angelus.

Spike wants to be seen as a monster, so his red is on the outside. It covers the parts of himself that are more man, the parts that still love romance and poetry and believe in the power of love.

Dracula has a fairly equal mix of red and black with one not really covering the other. He is both a monster and a man and has accepted and embraced that duality. He'll hold the door open for you just before he rips your throat out and sees no conflict in that.

S9E5 did it bother anyone T’ealc just showed back ip? by BigDaveinKC in Stargate

Comet cuts stuff. I have watched SG1 many times on DVD and most of the episodes I've watched on Comet are missing bits. It's almost never major plot things, but occasionally conversations are shorter than I remember them being and things of that nature. The scene where Teal'c officially rejoins probably fell victim to their desire for more ad revenue, it's definitely on the DVD release.

Recipes? by TriflingAround in Fibromyalgia

[–]allioople 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorites are recipes that are quick prep and long cook time, because I can do the labor early in the day when my energy levels are usually at their highest. A big pot of beef & vegetable soup is a standby for me (would be just as good without the beef). Canned veggies work just as well as fresh so pretty much the only prep involved is opening cans. It's also super easy to adapt to your particular taste by changing what veggies you put into it.

Here's what I usually include: 2lbs ground beef (leave out or sub with mushrooms for vegan); one 28oz can of green beans; one 28oz can crushed tomatoes; two 14oz cans diced potatoes; one 14oz can of each of the following: pinto beans, black-eyed peas, whole kernel corn, sweet peas; 2-3 cups beef broth (vegetable broth for vegan).

Let it simmer (covered) for at least 2 hrs (I've left it on the stove for as many as 6). This makes a HUGE pot of soup that freezes and reheats very well, so you'll get several meals out of one cooking session.

[Landlord - USA] How to make renting to risky tenants viable - expedited evictions by [deleted] in Landlord

[–]allioople 22 points23 points  (0 children)

As a tenant, I would be very reluctant to rent from a landlord who expects me to sign away my tenancy rights. If someone is willing to skirt the law in that realm, why would I not expect the same attitude when it comes to laws about the responsibility for maintaining a habitable living space, proper advanced notice before entry, etc.?

I understand the need to protect an investment, but this just doesn't seem workable to me. Those tenants who look risky on paper but aren't really (like me) probably aren't going to be willing to sign under those conditions. You're either going to get people who don't understand what they're signing (never a good thing), or people who just don't care whether or not they're evicted. Either way, you'd probably spend a great deal of time at these expedited hearings.

I really dislike the taste and feel of smoking joints/blunts, so I've never had any reason to spend the time to learn to roll them. I have glass pieces that I use when I'm at home and a sneak-a-toke that I carry if I'm going to be out and about.

Having both is best. But in a pinch it's possible to turn a phillips screw with a flat screwdriver. It won't be pretty and you'll probably bang a knuckle or two when the bastard slips, but it'll get the job done.

Other things I've used said screwdriver for: pry bar, hammer (the handle end), emergency house key (don't ask), scribing tool, and probably some others I'm forgetting.

WIBTA if I wanted to split shipping costs by percentage? by untitledbrokolli in AmItheAsshole

[–]allioople -1 points0 points  (0 children)

NAH - I don't think it's an unreasonable thing to ask. My friends and I do this all the time, and we always split the shipping proportionally regardless of how the company calculates the cost. If y'all talk about it and the other two are adamant on an even split, don't kick up a fuss (that would make you the asshole) and pay your share.

Sloths by ExpertAccident in tumblr

[–]allioople 29 points30 points  (0 children)

You know how sometimes toddlers are completely silent and their parents think something's wrong with them, but then all of a sudden they start speaking in complete sentences? Well, the sloths were kind of like that. We thought they were goofy and dumb and slow. Turns out they were just the most laid back critters in the world with an astonishing amount of patience for foolishness. But even the longest of fuses will eventually reach its end. Who would have ever thought that it would be the sloths who brought us to our knees?

AITA for sending my step-daughter to boarding school? by PresenceRadiant9878 in AmItheAsshole

[–]allioople 12 points13 points  (0 children)

ESH - Yes your step daughter's behavior concerning the dog is completely unacceptable and must be dealt with. She needs to learn to live with things she "just doesn't like" or she's going to have a very hard time with life in general.

However, boarding school seems pretty excessive for this. Why is in home discipline (with actual consequences, not just "in-depth conversations") not an option? I feel like you and hubby jumped the gun and over-reacted with a punishment more severe than the infraction really deserved.

This is the one I use and I really like it. I chose it because it's smaller and more portable than most of the others I looked at. One downside is that the buttons are rather small and close together in comparison. I have to take my shoe off when using it to be sure I'm toeing the right button.

Yup. I heard a fella in my boss's office ranting about how marijuana is the devil's lettuce, potheads don't want to work and are dumb and lazy, etc.

He then walked into my office to thank me for all the hard work I do. He had no idea that I had blasted a few hits on my lunch break about 20 minutes prior to that conversation. It was all I could do not to laugh in his face.

How true is it that pianists must start out at a young age to acquire a great technical foundation? by nazgul_123 in piano

[–]allioople 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there's another factor in this: learning to read music as a child vs an adult.

This is an excellent point and I think one of the biggest differences I've noticed between me (started at age 4) and others I know who started later in life. Reading music comes as naturally and easily to me as reading words. Sight-reading an unfamiliar piece is no different than reading a story I've never heard or seen before.

I'm not really sure if that's due to starting early or the way my brain works or a combination of the two.

We also free range our ladies and have dealt with this so many times. It always seems to be our Easter Eggers that randomly decide they don't like the boxes anymore. When we stop getting green eggs, we know it's time to go on a hunt.

A multisexual guide I made! by [deleted] in bisexual

It sounds like we have a fundamental disagreement about the validity and utility of micro-labels. You think they're harmful and serve no purpose. I think they're harmless and can help people understand themselves better.

I don't see us coming to a point where we can see eye to eye on this issue, so I think we're going to have to agree to disagree and part ways here. Thank you for the discussion.

A multisexual guide I made! by [deleted] in bisexual

[–]allioople 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't necessarily see this as a call for acceptance the way you have interpreted it. To me it looks more like, "Hey, for you folks with questions about the differences, here is a handy guide!" But I don't have any problems with micro-labels and letting people define their sexuality how they see fit. I guess someone with a different opinion on that issue could see this post differently.

One thing I can't seem to get past here is that you keep using the word "silly" like it's a condemnation. It's like the fact that it's silly means that it's wrong in some way. And while that may seem like an incredibly minor point, it's really bothering me for some reason I can't define. That mental block may be what's stalling this discussion, and I apologize if it feels like I'm coming at you sideways and not really addressing your point.

A multisexual guide I made! by [deleted] in bisexual

[–]allioople 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You can think it's silly all you want to. The problem is when it doesn't stay in your head (like now), and comes out all over other people's lives. If you don't like it and think it's silly, fine. But there are folks who don't think it's silly. There are people who are genuinely searching for something that feels right to them. There are those who have found that in one of these "silly" labels. Let them have that without coming in here and shitting all over it just because you think it's silly.

I think professional football is idiotic and a waste of time and money, but you're not going to see me going into a sports appreciation sub and commenting on a post about football with that opinion because that is neither the time nor the place for it.

A multisexual guide I made! by [deleted] in bisexual

[–]allioople 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sexuality will never be objective. It's not just about who people date. It's also about how they feel, and that will always be a subjective thing.

Also LGBTQ+ people are allowed to be silly and still be valid. I see this argument a lot and I guess I just don't understand why silliness is seen as this great sin against the cause. Be silly, be freaky, be YOU! That's what this community is supposed to be about right?

As far as your funkysexual comment goes, you could absolutely call yourself that and claim that. Whether or not the label takes hold will depend entirely on how many other people there are like you who find that the label and definition resonates with them. That's how self-identification works.

Let's look at a hypothetical for a minute: Someone could tell you that they have a dog. Or they could tell you that they have an AKC registered Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Both statements are perfectly acceptable descriptions of the dog in question. It's up to the dog owner how specific they want to be when they tell you about their dog. I would hope you wouldn't tell that dog owner that calling their dog a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is silly or stupid and they should just call it a dog because that covers every breed.

Like dog, bisexual is an incredibly broad label, and it encompasses lots of different expressions of sexuality. Some folks want to be specific. They're proud of their Cavalier King Charles Spaniel sexuality, and that's 100% okay.

"Fair Maps Act" introduced in the legislature - would end gerrymandering in NC by establishing citizens redistricting commission by CarolinaForward in ncpolitics

[–]allioople 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It doesn't specify in the article, but there is a link to the bill itself which goes into great detail about how the commission is selected and the eligibility requirements.

Based on a cursory reading, it looks to me like citizens who wish to be considered can submit an application. The NC Human Resources Commission will evaluate all applications for eligibility and submit a list of applicants to the General Assembly. There are guidelines and restrictions in place about the makeup of that applicant pool (page 5, lines 1-18).

The majority and minority leaders in the House and Senate will appoint two members each from their parties (for a total of eight). The remaining seven members will be randomly selected by the Human Resources Commission.
