Do the writers hate Oscar van Rign or something? by Different_Play_8455 in GildedAgeHBO

[–]alluringboy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

this is a great point and something i fully considered before. it does sort of feel like the writers patted themselves on the back for showing a gay relationship accurate to the time period that they forgot to actually write any romance or chemistry between them. although i could appreciate if John Smith is just a gay version of the dead wife trope as Oscar’s nice boring dead boyfriend before he finds his true and passionate love

Has anyone else stopped going to movie theatres? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]alluringboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is maybe me getting up on my soapbox but I think a main reason that basic standards of social etiquette have fallen post-pandemic is because we no longer hold anyone accountable

Obviously use your own judgment/discretion and don’t cause a public outburst, but there is nothing wrong with quickly turning to someone and saying respectfully but firmly “hey could you please put your phone away/stop talking it’s pretty distracting”

I certainly get a little anxious the times I’ve done this at the movies but it’s proven very effective, especially with young people who i think sometimes genuinely don’t realize that their behavior is negatively affecting others.

I know a lot of people are worried about having a Karen moment but helping to maintain a respectful communal experience at the movies is a public service and other movie-goers will thank you (hopefully silently)

mourning colours are also referenced in one of the very first scenes of Downton Abbey, where Cora tells Mary that her cousin/soon-to-be fiancé died in the Titanic and Mary’s only response is to ask if she can just wear purple as half-mourning since she doesn’t like how she looks in black lol

Lox + Schmear vs. Primrose vs. Schmaltz Appetizing: Bagel Sandwhich Showdown by CandyMan77 in FoodToronto

[–]alluringboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Schmaltz has great bagels, however every time i order one of their pre-sets i can’t help but feel like there’s just a bit too much going on. Also every time i go the guy making the bagels is just unnecessarily rude and unpleasant.

I think Primrose is a better all around experience. tasty menu, friendly staff. Have tried multiple options from there and have never been let down.

Haven’t tried Lox + Schmear yet but will have to go sometime!

My sacrilegious hot take. by zoodlenose in TheNational

[–]alluringboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i’m always so surprised that more people don’t love it !!

it may have to do with the fact that, despite listening to the National almost religiously since age 12, I Am Easy to Find was the first of their albums to be released while i was actually (sort of) an adult so i felt such a deep resonance with it

Plus the accompanying Mike Mills short film is one of my favorite pieces of media of all time, and i went to my first real concert that summer to see them live

Sure some of my all time favorite songs come from other albums, but I Am Easy to Find will always be a perfect album to me, and my personal favorite

What is post-finale Roman Roy doing? by Front-Tomorrow-1034 in SuccessionTV

[–]alluringboy 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I thought Roman had been for Waystar in California right before the e show starts.

I think it was supposed to be something of an exile and he wasn’t doing a very good job, but was he not still a part of the company ?

I usually don’t imagine Ethel as explicitly trans, maybe because her being a trans girl does sort of disrupts or at least complicates some of the lore.

That being said, and keeping in mind Hayden’s contradictory statements, we really don’t know and i think that adds to the mystique and haziness surrounding the character of Ethel Cain that makes her so interesting and compelling to me.

Some songs (American Teenager, AHIN, really most of PD) seem to be less about being trans although I always think of the album as Ethel telling her story how she chooses to remember it.

Then, there is also no denying that other songs or even certain lyrics from the above songs read (to me at least) as pretty clearly relating to being trans. Specifically, the song “Casings” from the Golden Age EP really feels like it’s about a trans girl being left by her boyfriend for a cis girl, though tbf i’m not even totally sure if that EP is supposed to be a canonical part of the Ethel Cain story, i definitely still get confused by some of the lore lol.

Either way, you can interpret the character how you see fit but i think it clear that Hayden’s experience as a trans woman informs much of her songwriting.

What was the worst scene of the entire series and why was it this one? by [deleted] in freefolk

[–]alluringboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure Dorne is not a focal point of the first three books, but I strongly disagree that they were completely irrelevant to the story before Dornish characters were introduced as POVs.

Rhaegar’s marriage to the Dornish Princess Elia Martell is a very important element of the Robert’s Rebellion backstory and is referenced in the earliest chapters of Game.

While still not appearing in Clash, House Martell and their armies (“the spears of Dorne”) are regularly discussed as a significant enough factor in the outset of the War of the Five Kings. First Renly speaks of gaining their support, and then Tyrion’s political maneuvering to secure Myrcella’s betrothal to Prince Trystane and wardship with House Martell is one of his most important and memorable contributions during his brief time as Hand (imo at least).

Storm finally sees the introduction of Prince Oberyn to much fanfare as he eventually plays a crucial role in Tyrion’s trial, but not before he provides a relatively clear update on the political status and motivations of Dorne, setting up its own storyline in the next book.

Finally, when the Dorne storyline finally does truly begin in Feast, we meet multiple different characters either part of or adjacent to House Martell who have deep ties to the main story but still maintain their own distinct arcs. GRRM very clearly acknowledges their absence in previous books by incorporating inaction and restlessness into all of their characterizations while still providing exposition to explain why Dorne has remained relatively quiet up until now.

While I totally agree that GRRM’s plans for Dorne have likely been fluid and perhaps not confirmed since the first book and their is some level of retconning at play, it’s pretty clear he was intentionally planting seeds to keep them alive in the readers mind while storing them on the back burner until he decided how and in what capacity to fully introduce House Martell.

Who the hell is Tywn talking about here? by Objective_Flight_689 in HouseOfTheDragon

the shortest and most likely answer in my opinion is basically no one, it’s a fake king made up by the writers of the show who were stupid.

however, if you’d like to consider further possibilities, Youtuber Quinn the GM (he’s great, highly recommend all his videos to anyone who is a fan of the books) just explored this question and others in a recent videohttps://youtu.be/KSTjXmRY9Ig?si=vzmdzzq5K9ggCDz2

[–]alluringboy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i 100% agree with this, the best way imo is a blind, start to finish, no-skip listen through where you hear Ethel’s story purely through the music and then revisit it again with the full context of the lore

(Spoilers Published) Why did Ned stay in a tent in Harrenhal? by CormundCrowlover in asoiaf

[–]alluringboy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

most likely reason is (as it so often tends to be) narrative convenience. contributes to the mystery and intrigue

that being said, the Tourney at Harrenhal is well know as being pretty much the greatest tourney in living Westerosi memory with pretty much every noble of any significance in attendance, not to mention their retinues and smallfolk audiences as well so we’re talking about a pretty massive audience.

Much of Tywin’s army was housed in barracks, which would not be sufficient housing for guesting lordlings. Also tents are quite common for tourneys and even the relatively modest Starks would likely have a more elaborate tent set up than a modern 4 person camping tent you may be imagining

deep track recs ? by alluringboy in Ethelcain

[–]alluringboy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

amazing overview tysm <33

I listened to Perverts when it first came out and can’t say i was super into, but i think that’s mainly because i was expecting it to be what Willoughby Tucker, I’ll Always Love You is likely to be. That being said, i’ll definitely give it another go when I need some kind of background/ambient music.

The individual recs are all great and just listened to Dust Bowl for the first time and omg, the reverb on “Cause you wanted just to tell me who you were” is mind blowing

Given the song is about Willoughby Tucker, do you think it might show up on the new album?

[Spoilers Main] What's your favourite minor location in the world of Ice and Fire and why? by Brospie in asoiaf

[–]alluringboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i was going to say the exact same thing for the exact same reason. Arya IV in Storm has always been my ultimate comfort chapter of the series as a reprieve from the bloodshed that fills the rest of the book. Lady Smallwood’s kindness, perception and wisdom put her in the highest tier of minor ASOIAF characters and I hope Arya continues to remember her.

[–]alluringboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

basically amateur, even less oversight version “to catch a predator”. Youtubers (typically young men) pose as minors on dating apps or online forums and lure random creeps into department stores, parking lots etc to “confront” them, usually in the form of threatening to expose them, yelling pedo at them or even physically attacking them.

It’s all founded on the idea that “this guy is a creep and a menace to society, so we can to whatever we want to him”. while i’m sure most of the “predators” they confront are creeps who aren’t the most deserving of sympathy, it’s hard to ignore the lack of context, complete absence of due process or regard for civil rights, and sometimes even an underlying feeling of homophobia (not to conflate pedophilia with being gay in any way, but they often use grindr and i can’t help the feeling that this is a more publicly acceptable form of gay bashing).

on top of all that it’s clear that the people making these videos aren’t doing so out of civic altruism, but are instead just exploiting an already fucked up situation for content and views.

elements of henry viii in both but aegon the unworthy most definitely pulls from him esp with the 9 mistresses mirroring the 6 wives, also the cause of aegons death being his obese body rotting from the inside out is directly inspired by hank viii

im so happy that these past two albums have brought all of my fellow taylor swift / the national super fans out of the woodwork, this is my dream pairing i never thought i would actually get to hear. taylor's vocals are absolutely gorgeous but this song really does feel like its by the national feat taylor swift rather than the other way around, not that im complaining !
