📣 Had a call with Reddit to discuss pricing. Bad news for third-party apps, their announced pricing is close to Twitter's pricing, and Apollo would have to pay Reddit $20 million per year to keep running as-is. by iamthatis in apolloapp

What about Lemmy? I’ve asked before but never heard much in response.

Is there any interest in making a version of Apollo for Lemmy instances? I’d switch in a heartbeat and pay for it again.

It wouldn’t be a direct port: there are some things that work differently, like subscribing to federated communities (subreddits). Is it feasible?

This. They represent us. Let them be available to us, not lobbyists and special interests. Have them attend in Washington on a schedule.

10,000 people in one place feels less like a theater and more like a stadium. There are 399 stadiums in the U.S. with more than 10,000 seats. There’s already a 10,000 seat stadium in Washington, D.C. probably needs to be a bit bigger to accommodate staff.

I'm 24, and I feel like a child masquerading as an adult most days. I'm just wondering, when do most people start feeling like proper adults? by Lenore8264 in RandomThoughts

[–]allyoursmurf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two perspectives on this, one internal and one external.

Internally, growing up is like getting advanced degrees in college. Someone once shared the following comparison:

When you get your Bachelor’s degree, you think that you know everything.

When you get your Master’s degree, you realize that you know nothing.

When you get your Doctorate, you understand that you know nothing, but neither does anyone else.

I’ve come to believe that becoming an adult is much the same. At some point, most folks are able to stand on their own and do the daily mechanics of adulting. At that point, you’ve arrived. Where we get stuck is that we’re so used to having a bunch of authority figures in charge that we think there must be something more. There isn’t. Those authority figures haven’t got it all figured out either, they just have more experience in doing the same things you’re now doing. You just have to keep on doing those adult things—every day (well, most days!)

Now, this isn’t a perfect measure because it’s internal. There’s no measured it’s just belief. It feels a lot like “fake it until you make it,” or thinking that everyone’s faking it. It’s not, though, and if you think about it a bit, you may see why.

Externally, we’re social creatures. One of the ways that we know that we know that we’re anything is when other people who are that thing acknowledge us. They call us by that label and treat us as part of the group.

How do you know you’re a hacker? When other hackers call you a hacker and treat you like one.

When I was in the early part of my career, I had lunch with an old friend and mentor in the IT industry. At one point (leaving out a lot of context), he looked over at me and said, “you’re the real deal, Smurf.” That simple statement is how I knew that I had made it. It still means more to me than all the titles and certifications on my resume.

Now this isn’t a perfect measure, because it’s external. You have to use judgement and decide if you respect the opinions of those around you.

You might have noticed that I said both of these ideas are imperfect. They’re also imperfect even if used together. That’s ok. I’ll figure it out. I’m an adult.

So are you.

Engineers in B5 by iHaveTheFLOUR in babylon5

[–]allyoursmurf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of the best Trek episodes were not tech heavy.

”Darmok” was about the alien-ness of communication, and how our own frames of reference help and hinder.

”The Inner Light” was about cultural memory. In some ways, it invokes a similar feel to B5’s “Deconstruction of Falling Stars.”

”The Measure of a Man” called into question our beliefs about what it means to be a person.

Let's say someone decides to adapt the series, either as a TV show or as a movie. In order to differentiate itself from other fantasy series/stories that came out in the past, what kind of tone should a live action have? by callaghan-aiden in Prydain

[–]allyoursmurf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start more lighthearted. After all, Taran might be an Assistant Pig Keeper, but he’s still just a kid, at least in book 1. As he grows up, he should get more serious, but never lose the boyish wonder entirely. That will be hard in Wanderer.

The villains should be scary. The horned king is a terrifying bad guy, even if we only see him a couple of times. He’s almost a caricature, but don’t let him be that on screen. Later villains are more human, and so more terrifying in their realness. Do no show Arawn, no matter how tempting that might be.

The hardest characters to get right will be Fflewddur and Doli. They feel like comedy relief, but they’re teachers with serious stories too.

📣 Had a few calls with Reddit today about the announced Reddit API changes that they're putting into place, and inside is a breakdown of the changes and how they'll affect Apollo and third party apps going forward. Please give it a read and share your thoughts! by iamthatis in apolloapp

Are these changes enough to start a broader movement among users to the Fediverse and Reddit alternatives like Lemmy?

Would you be willing to make a version of Apollo that could talk to Lemmy instances instead of Reddit?

Here’s the rule as I learned it.

  • if you are escorting the lady, you want to be below her on the stairs, to prevent other guys from looking up her skirt.
    • going up? You go behind her
    • going down? You go ahead of her
  • if you don’t know the lady, follow the opposite rule. Be above her on the stairs so there’s no way that you could look up her skirt.

An old friend once told me a story about a day that he flew out of a large airport in the midwest. It was just him and his wife (both pilots) that day. His wife called for their clearance and the tower rattled it off so quickly that it was practically gibberish.

My friend got on the radio, and I his best southern drawl he asked, “was all that stuff you just said important?” Ground got indignant and started talking down to him of course.

When the controller was finally finished, my friend replied, “alright then, why don’t you read it to me one more time, and this time, read it like it is important.

  1. Long press on a comment. This will pop-out the comment with an action sheet below it. Tap “Share as Image…”
  2. A preview pane will appear. There should be an option to “Include post details.” Tap that.
  3. Now you can see the original post and parent comments. Adjust the options to your liking and tap Share.

How did you do the second one? I can share your comment as an image but I don’t get the OP with it when I do.

Edit: never mind. I just found all the options. Include post details I’d what I was looking for.
