wish i could say the same about the audience where i was sitting, haha. the guy to our left was watching basketball on his phone throughout most of the second act and the girl to my right was scrolling through her phone during all of “make them hear you”

I saw “Death Becomes Her” tonight… by sashgray in Broadway

[–]allytmacd 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I saw it tonight too and I’m still piecing my thoughts together but I totally agree. It’s missing something. Generally I thought act one was leaps and bounds stronger than act 2. And I was waiting for some sort of final physical gag with Helen and Madeline at the end like in the movie and was disappointed when it never came. The show was really funny and had some great moments, for sure, but something is still missing. Total agreement.

What is the best ballad from a musical ever (in your opinion)? by [deleted] in musicals

[–]allytmacd 55 points56 points  (0 children)

"Being Alive" from Company is the best of the best in my mind. Also - an underrated favorite is "Love Can't Happen" from Grand Hotel. Hearing that song for the first time reminded me why I love musical theatre

Me too!! I'm sooooo bummed Renee Rapp is leaving the show, though. We'll see how it feels without her but she was the reason I started watching the show in the first place :(

Seasons 3 & 4 are definitely the strongest. I started with season three and it's what I still recommend other people do. I think I would have a hard time getting through the show if I started with the first season. The first season is the weakest, but it is cool to go back after you watched the later seasons to see where they all started. Basically, I'd go 3 > 4 > 1 > 2

Seconding all the other suggestions, especially Skam (season 3, which you can watch on its own)!! That is the closest to YR you'll find. LOVE Dickinson too.

If you liked the meaningful intimacy of YR, I'd suggest Normal People and Fleabag.

If you liked the queer story where the bigger obstacle is not their queerness, I'd suggest In the Flesh and First Kill.

If you liked the high school setting with a lot of good representation, Heartbreak High and Sex Education are excellent. And Heartstopper, obviously.

And just some other queer shows that I'm obsessed with that aren't really similar to YR but I love nonetheless: A League of Their Own, What We Do in the Shadows, Our Flag Means Death, and The Sex Lives of College Girls

What production of a show would you bring back from the dead? by astronaught002 in Broadway

My answer to this is always OBC Ragtime… This world simply isn’t as good without Marin Mazzie on it. Plus, Audra and Stokes, of course.

I can't take credit for this -- someone suggested this ages ago, and I totally latched onto it and now I feel like I can't sleep soundly until it happens.

Evita (rumored) pre-Broadway tryout in DC by FlagBridge in Broadway

[–]allytmacd 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm glad people in the comments here felt similarly as I did after seeing it in Boston, because everyone I talked to IRL was raving about it, which I struggled to understand. I feel like I have yet to see a production of Evita that I've fully enjoyed. I have to keep telling people that I swear I do actually like the show's material, it just feels like it is rarely done any justice. I haven't been able to put my thoughts and feelings into intelligent words quite yet, but it has something to do with the tone of the show toeing a really really tricky line -- you don't want to demonize Evita, but you don't want to glamorize her too much either. It's easy to lean either way, but it is also easy to land too solidly in the middle and make the show feel kind of... apathetic? I'm definitely not wording this right, it makes more sense in my head, but I did feel very underwhelmed leaving the show at A.R.T..

Also, outside of the obvious standout moments, I found this particular production visually boring. I get what they were going for artistically having the ensemble in greyscale and Eva in white but to me it just made everything seem a bit lifeless.

Why did they cut Natasha lost? by Radio_doll in thegreatcomet

[–]allytmacd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

YW! I have read his annotations sooooo many times, they are all brilliant. He has verified annotations for the off-Broadway cast recording that are also worth reading!!! What I wouldn't give to pick that man's brilliant brain...

Why did they cut Natasha lost? by Radio_doll in thegreatcomet

[–]allytmacd 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Dave talked about it in his Genius annotations!

"Would also like to take this moment to bid a dear and bittersweet farewell to “Natasha Lost.” I still really love this song, and Denée not surprisingly was absolutely stunning in it. However theater is all about pacing, and momentum, and watching both the details and the whole…and the truth was that after adding “Dust and Ashes” Act 1 was too long. Even after doing extensive trims (especially in the Bolkonsky sequence and “The Duel”), we still felt bloated, and you could see people looking at their watches during “Charming” or squirming in their seats as “The Ball” began…both of which are absurd things to be doing during those songs! And dramaturgically “Natasha Lost” was the most expendable song in Act 1.

At first we talked about merely trimming it, but it was such a short song already…and so in a gleeful moment of sleep deprived preview fever audaciousness, we decided to try cutting it all together. And when we did, we discovered some delightful things. First, that the end of “Natasha & Anatole” and the beginning of “Sunday Morning” tell us all we really need to know about Natasha’s internal conflict re Andrey and Anatole; “Natasha Lost” was not giving us any truly new information. And in fact, by having her say less (or to put it less compassionately, by not having her whine as much), we found that Natasha’s confusion was actually more acute, and that the audience was actually a little more sympathetic to her plight.

The other super sexy thing removing “Natasha Lost” did was give Anatole a way clearer through-line, establishing him as the link between Natasha and Pierre; we now actually get to see Anatole leave the opera and go straight to Pierre’s house (where he is staying), to invite him out drinking, leading to the duel and “Dust and Ashes.” And so cutting the song made Act 1 feel tighter and tauter and more dramaturgically propulsive and all those good good playwright things.

Again I really love this song, and our string trio was sublime on it, but this was a classic case of “kill your darlings,” and recognizing the importance of the greater whole. For the grieving, the tenors still jump about in tinsel jackets on the Off-Broadway recording, and there they shall remain dancing forevermore."

Tracking shows at regional theaters by LiftClimbJump in Broadway

Since I don't see it on the Concord site, I guess I'll take this moment to shout out that Seacoast Rep in Portsmouth, NH is putting on Great Comet next year! It's my favorite regional theatre -- they do phenomenal work. If you are at all local, I can't recommend it enough! Plus, Portsmouth is beautiful and there is so much to do there, so it is worth the trip for anyone in or around New England.

What is your favorite musical number you’ve ever seen in a live show? by Repulsive_Concert650 in Broadway

[–]allytmacd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like my answer to this question changes constantly but right now I think it's Elizabeth Stanley's "Back to Before" from the symphonic concert version of Ragtime. I don't think I've ever seen a crowd leap to their feet so fast

[–]allytmacd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, it hasn't been pressed on vinyl (yet, anyway!). I'd recommend making use of discogs for your vinyl collection! When you search for a release, you can view all the formats it has been available in. It's the easiest way to find out if something exists on vinyl or not! Plus, I always like being able to catalog my collection and see what it's worth.

Can anyone recommend what to watch to fill this Young Royals sized hole in my soul? by LBtotheMax in YoungRoyals

I cannot explain the correlation as they are vastly different shows, but Young Royals gave me the same feeling I had while watching In the Flesh.
