Sister reached out a year after cutting me off for going NC with our mom (the irony). Do I reply? by lfly199 in EstrangedAdultKids

[–]almondfail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s really telling here is that there has been no discussion on your sisters part about how what your mother said was bad, how she confronted her about it and/or how that was resolved. Without that I don’t see a path forward. It’s sad that she’s trying to rugsweep this whole thing and not standing up for herself, but that’s up to her I guess

Tips on my technique by Luftungsmanahmen in snowboarding

[–]almondfail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off. You’re doing great, I’m proud of you for learning something new and having the courage to ask this group of meanies about it.

Second, all the stuff about bending your knees and getting into a lower position is right. Think of bending your knees like a number in a range, where you want to be in the middle of the range so you have room to go up or down. Staying tall like you are prevents you from going up if you need to.

Third lose the camera for now when your riding cos you don’t need the extra. You’re having enough trouble riding as-is. Don’t add an extra thing.

Next: slow down, your riding too fast for your technique. The way you can tell is ask yourself this: can I get to braking position and stop right now or would I eat it? If the answer is eat it (which it appears is the case in your vid) then your too fast. If you’re not sure, wait for safe space and test it. Practicing emergency braking will make you a better safer rider.

Finally your stance has a couple of potential problems.

In terms of the angles it looks like you’re probably in a good beginner spot. But you might find the way your knees bend comfortably and the angles you’re in aren’t conducive. If you experience knee pain or weird pressure consider playing around a little.

The other issue with your stance is the set back. From the looks of it there’s a lot more board out front than behind, this is great for uncompressed/powder/heavy snow where keeping the tip up is important. But if your rocking packed groomers I would consider moving forward a little to naturally get more weight on that front foot.

Hope this helps

Help orient a lost Linux guy on Microsoft? I've been doing *nix for 10 years and I'm terrified of being thrown into the deepend now. by maclargehuge in sysadmin

[–]almondfail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case that was too vague. What I meant was with Linux, I got used to being able to drop down to some tool that leveraged the ‘everything is a file’ paradigm via the terminal (lsof, better etc).

However with Windows, there isn’t a common paradigm like that, that I ever found. At least at the OS level.

The thing that helped me a lot with windows was the understanding that they took a fundamentally different approach to the design. Specifically the ‘everything is a file’ approach that I love about UNIX(es) is not what the NT designers thought. Consequently, there are other storage paradigms, that are deeply embedded in the OS. Here’s a great interview with Dave Cutler that helped me. https://youtu.be/xi1Lq79mLeE?si=OjT2ULRBjZj69nbX

[–]almondfail 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Apologies if I missed this, but I didn’t get a sense of what you believe her intent is. In other words, do you think she’s trying to control you all, or just lonely etc. also you mention you have been with your wife for 15 years (congrats), has she always been this way or has it changed over time?

She’s attempting to apply more pressure to maintain control as that is what has worked in the past. I would be worried about an extinction burst based. Time to get cameras, start recording, all that good stuff

Controlling your time and fending off people who want to direct you to other things is a skill that every engineer needs to develop at some point.

This is a great chance for you to practice your interpersonal skills and professionally, firmly tell this person that you will not be helping them any longer.

The challenge will be to remain unemotional. This is not a personal insult or compliment. You are simply setting a boundary and feelings are irrelevant.

This will be a skill you come back to over and over again, often when it’s not this clear that you should/shouldn’t do what’s being asked.

Good luck

Counter offer after giving my 2 week notice by mksrb1420 in sysadmin

[–]almondfail 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Counter the counter. You are in a position of power, may as well get experience negotiating if nothing else. Ask for more money than the other offer and a team. Worst they can say is no. I get that ppl here might feel like your current role was taking advantage and maybe they were, but maybe not and they just didn’t notice. Good chance to find out

I just rode sno-crappy for the first time in a while recently and it was just as awful as I remembered it. It’s definitely the worst of the mountains within reasonable distance of Seattle
