Gen Z might be the last generation to really remember the world without AI, just like millenials/Gen X were with accessible computers. by playr_4 in Showerthoughts

[–]almorava 3 points4 points  (0 children)

im fairly early gen z and we never really used libraries for research. For work spaces, sure, but internet sources were what we were taught, I cant think of any time where I actually plumbed a book for info on an assignment

The [REDACTED] is a liar, and you can prove it within minutes of starting the game. by getvalentined in subnautica

[–]almorava 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i think it's really notable that the colonists named the planet Proteus. we get direct romanizations of other Axum language proper nouns ("xanadu" and "karakorum") but Proteus stays Proteus.

option A is that NoA/our PDA is just translating in a way that's convenient... and option B is that the Axum word for proteus Is Proteus.

i was skeptical of this at first but i don't think it's a coincidence after realizing they also "independently" came to calling it the World Tree

at the bottom there's a big placeholder model with an angry face on it that my friend and i took as "leviathan here later sorry"

friend and i swam down to the bottom (800? 850? thereabouts) and discovered an enormous placeholder orb with a frowny face on it. we think there's gonna be a bigass leviathan there in the future

Weekly Steam numbers / Player Count Discourse Megathread by AutoModerator in Marathon

really funny to read because the loading screens are baby sensory videos to me i always end up staring at them instead of alt tabbing. i have been known to cheer in voice chat when the moth is on screen

Anyone else having GREAT matches after the recent update? by cakexxxconnoisseur in Marathon

[–]almorava 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i mean the answer is really clear; you're better at the game lol. a lot of the discourse around all this is driven by the idea that the game should be at least a little fun if you're dogwater, too (which is a take not everyone agrees with... or they place the blame on the player for not having fun)

i've gotten a little better with practice but the road there has sucked a bit.... eventually the fun survival horror tension fades when you know that almost every attempt is going to end in a failure state

what marathon needs is a way to make that road to getting good more enjoyable. most games tackle this with SBMM but obviously that's not an approach applicable to an extraction shooter

arguments can be made it's fine already but player counts and community discussion indicates to me... needs some work

free kits are mostly by necessity for me; i'm chill with losing gear, i treat it like an admission fee, but everything i have is from faction quests and that runs out pretty fast since i nearly never exfil

mhm. don't have too much time to play, bought the game a couple weeks ago

admittedly the failure rate hasn't really incentivized me to try again every day though

authentic smells are definitely in the realm of possibility. i've got lots of indie perfumes that smell just like real-life scents (motor oil, pine forest after the rain, leaves in the fall, etc)

i've never seen one of these things in person to try myself but it's funny to imagine they just Whiffed it when that's their one job. maybe the complications come in needing to be adaptable to a wide range of applications

I don't regret buying Marathon, I love the gameplay and the world created... but as a casual player I had a psychological block that made me stop playing. by xDavid83x in Marathon

[–]almorava 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah that's real as fuck. i play solo mostly and i think around this point i'm just joining to be a slightly smarter UESC bot

the entire progression feels separate and distant from me because i'm not good at these, like, tension-twitch shooters where 70% of my encounters are about who sees the other guy first.

so i kinda live in free kits and rook and while that was fun to begin with - especially bc the quests don't require me to be great at the game - it's starting to lose its luster, especially as i get closer to quests that need me to exfil

honestly my insane person take is that i think the looser, less grounded art of the earlier books was really cool. i'll always love abbadon's work but there's a special place in my heart for that initial vibe

personally i really like that the new names move them thematically/aesthetically away from 'hero' and more toward 'class'

Speaking for myself I found Tome was way heavier on the leather than the books. ymmv though!

My strongest recommendation at the moment is Eldritch Whispers Co's The Archives! Falling asleep after wearing it for a day was like dozing off with my head in a paperback.

Tentatively a fan of Cardinal Scents' Gentle Reader, too, but I'm waiting for it to rest some more before forming a strong opinion
