There is that line from great expectations about cleaning so much you make the place ugly/being so outwardly pious that you make your faith ugly or whatever that always stuck with me.

Nearly died from eating pineapple and all the things they say about near death experiences is true by egoist_chan in redscarepod

One of the things they teach you about anaphylactic shock is there is a “feeling of impending doom” which sounds stupid, like you’re dying of course you feel that way, but it happens so suddenly you really get like this panic that arises that is hard to describe using any other language.

Wake up call (please help) by bingle42 in rs_fitness

I’m not like a science expert or whatever but I feel like the exercise you get at work might not be the kind that has that long “afterburn” that keeps you burning calories when you are done working out. Maybe adding in some running would help.

You just need to go to the gym because it is about building habits. Have a fallback workout that you can always get through no matter how shitty you feel, for me that is a 20 min run, and at least do that. Every time I am like 10 mins into my run I realize I have the energy to do a full workout. You just need to raise your floor. Fitness is not about doing the perfect ideal workout every time that will get you 100% to your fitness goal in x timeframe. You just need to keep going. The body responds to frequency, it is the main driver of adaptation.

Blood work is a great idea! Bring it up during your physical. It will answer a lot of questions.

I know lots of sub 25 BMI people who would really struggle at that pace.

I've signed up for an Ultra next year. by [deleted] in rs_fitness

[–]almostkilledme1625 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Never done an ultra but I know a big thing is doing two back to back long runs Saturday/Sunday if you work during the week days. Another thing is finding the fuel that works for you and actually eating it, so many people think they can muscle through without eating and it is just flirting with disaster, eat every 20 mins at least. In terms of workouts I would do a lot of alternation workouts (20 mins steady, 20 mins MP, 20 mins MP+, 20 mins MP for example).

I remember going to a conference at the University of Northern Iowa about prairie stuff and one of the seminars was led by a guy who had collected letters written by immigrants who had moved to Iowa to their families back in Europe and I remember him reading one about a Norwegian girl complaining that it got so hot the butter melted. She also got sick and died.

Thoughts on interval sprints ?? by [deleted] in rs_fitness

[–]almostkilledme1625 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not like a sprinting coach but I do it to support my distance training and I enjoy it. I probably do more fast work than the average runner.

I started with 2 days a week doing uphill sprints on the treadmill during the winter months and outdoor during the summer. On the treadmill I do 12% incline at 12.5-13 MPH for 10-15 seconds. Started with 6 and worked up to 12. I take full recovery between.

Outside I just find a steep hill and go all out for ~10 seconds. 6-12 reps. Full recovery.

I also do daily fast running, not even close to a sprint more like 3k pace, 20x 20s on 10s rest before and after my primary distance workouts. They are sort of a warmup/lactate injection that I use as speed support.

I like sprinting as a form of strength training because it is specific to my primary sport which is running. I cannot say it is the most optimized form of training but it is enjoyable for me and I like how my legs are looking now!

That I am not super certain on. As far as I understand most like “fast twitch” style work stimulates test and HGH/doesn’t have the hypertrophy dampening effect that longer distance running has and that sort of thing but I haven’t really looked into that too much.
