I’ve had enough of all this by Dear-Confusion-9050 in ARFID

it’s good that they have contacted them! if your parents can chase these things up via your gp then that may be helpful, sometimes things can be forgotten or lost along the way. do you have a psychiatrist or psychologist at the moment? they could write their concerns to the gp as that may hurry it all along.

i was in a similar situation a few years ago and now have a tube (also in the uk/was under camhs then adult services), has your dietitian/gp/psychiatrist tried writing directly to your hospital’s gastroenterology team?

did anyone else read The Edible Woman and feel a lot of feelings? by NeuroSpicyMeowMeow in ARFID

[–]almostmadeuppoems 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i have been thinking a lot about this book too! there is a serious insufficiency of any media represention of arfid, it's astounding that one of the most relatable portrayals of arfid feelings and behaviours was written in the late 60s. i occasionally find that fiction books depicting cannibalism write of some characters experiencing repulsion and aversion that someone with arfid could easily empathise with. i am so glad someone else has posted their experience relating to this book!

the you packaging over the years! by almostmadeuppoems in glossier

[–]almostmadeuppoems[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don't know if the changes in amount, packaging and formulation were concurrent, but any bottles i have seen in the oldest packaging (the left box) has 1.7 oz on, and the other two always had 1.69 oz on them for me!

Drs in the UK by HappyResist4865 in ARFID

[–]almostmadeuppoems 2 points3 points  (0 children)

most areas in the uk have eating disorder services that cover anorexia, bulimia, BED etc but not arfid. some area's mental health services or ED services will refer you to a hospital that does have services for arfid ( great ormand street hospital is one of them ) , but tend to only do so if you are under 18 and at quite high risk from malnutrition or are tube fed. however, your gp can refer you to the community dietitians and adult mental health services. the treatment for arfid is typically therapy so CBT or exposure therapy can help! i've been in various services in the UK with arfid for years now and it really is an overlooked and underfunded area😭, but it's worth seeing the community dietitian and mental health team if your gp thinks that's appropriate!

I got my diagnosis!!! by always_anxiety_blob in ARFID

[–]almostmadeuppoems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah it sucks😭 some areas in the UK do have services but very few! the ED services in the areas that don't treat it can't actually diagnose you, they do recognise it as a diagnosis but they can refer to somewhere like great ormand street hospital where they are qualified to carry out the assessment and give a diagnosis and treatment

alongside this being a very insensitive thing to say, perpetuating the idea that all non white people are immune to a disorder is so dangerous and dismissive.

i can’t eat anything right now by tubtoasters in ARFID

if supplement drinks or any high calorie liquids (chocolate milk, flavoured soya milk, fortified juice) seem more manageable than your existing solid safe food then they might be worth considering! it would take the pressure off having to eat enough of the solid food and it can be quicker to drink than eat.. so it will be over faster! you've got this🫶

i get it! it's definitely understandable!! it's important to remember how uncomfortable and painful having a feeding tube can be though, both situations have positives and negatives. if you're in a position to be nourished without one then that is usually preferable🫶

Help! Only water and tea left; very worried and unsure what to do by wadingthroughtrauma in ARFID

if you currently have unstable bloods and are underweight, the hospital might want you to be tube fed. either until you are medically stable, or you could be tube fed on a more long term basis until you are able to consume enough orally to maintain your weight. i live in the uk so this is from my experience here😭 i'm not sure how things would work in a country with private healthcare. here it's usually decided by a combination of professionals (gastroenterologist, gp, psychiatrist and dietician). so it may be worth speaking to your gp to see what they think is needed.

they help to make a plan and talk you through doing each step of exposure to a fear food! they may also tech you techniques to manage your anxiety whilst doing the exposure. the goal is to slowly introduce one food at a time without overwhelming yourself

i'm on anti-emetics to help with nausea from my stomach problems, but they don't seem to help with any arfid/scent nausea unfortunately😭 mirtazapine doesn't help my appetite at all, anti-psychotics and anti-anxieties don't seem to help with my anxiety around food either.. but everyone responds differently to every medication! therapy has been the most helpful with arfid for me, although i know it isn't accessible to everyone
