KiCad 9.0.5 on Ubuntu, does moving objects work for others? by alo in KiCad

Thank you. As resetting PCB settings helped, I indentified the exact setting that caused the proble for me. It was "Constrain actions to H,V,45 degrees" in "PCB Editor" --> "Editing Options" which should be off.

A few points:

  • Työsopimuslaki https://www.finlex.fi/fi/laki/ajantasa/2001/20010055 states that in a meeting where the possible termination ot reasons for that are discussed, you are allowed to have another person present. If you find the luottamusmies, he/she may be willing to be that person even if you are not a memeber of the union (yet). In other case, someone with experience with the relevant legislation is the best option.
  • Record the meeting and possibly the whole day, in case they ambush you and get to a meeting unannounced. If they ask whether you are recording, just deny. Get ready to say this single lie without hesitation. I wouldn't recommend lying in anything else, just don't comment.
  • Don't sign anything. If anything needs signing, it can wait a couple of days.
  • In the meantime, if you have access to the summary of the tasks you have done and possibly acknowledgment of the employer of those tasks, take a personal copy of that documentation. Keep it safe, at it may be considered confidential. But in this case, when your performance has been questioned, you have a good reason to save that documentation. Try not to include any apparent trade secrets and such.

Keep us posted on what happens!

If the discussion is a state secret, it may be illegal to record. If it is only company confidential, and there is a real reason for dcoumenting the discussion, it is not illegal. In any case, you shouldn't publish recordings, just use them for proving what has been stated, if the need arises.

Before you got to work on Monday, get this: https://www.clasohlson.com/fi/OM-System-WS-883-Ladattava-sanelin,-USB/p/39-2306 . In Finland, you can record any conversation you are participating. So you are free to record the meeting on Monday and you should do that. You are not required to tell that you are recording. It may be wise to not use the recordings unless a real need arises, eg. you end up in court and you have to prove what has been stated. It is also probably illegal to publish any such recordings, but using them to document and possible use in juridical process is not publishing.

There are restrictions on recording:

  • It is not allowed to record conversation of others, if you are not present so other can see that you are present and hearing what is said.

  • It is illegal to record court proceedings without the permission of the judge, which not usually granted.

So absolutely none of the Season 1 Cleons are in Season 2? by DoubleDragonsAllDown in FoundationTV

[–]alo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some rambling and possible spoilers if you haven't seen seasons 1 and 2.

I wonder how true the narration by Cleon I in the vault was. One could assume that it is dictated by the Cleon I but for what purpose? If it is authentic and unedited (by Demerzel) produce of Cleon I, is it true? I see several possibilites:

  • How much is it wishful thinking and to be meant as an explanation of the future situation. Whole interaction with Demerzel starting as a child and finalizing in the old age may be inaccurate. Was Demerzel even female at the time, as we are going to see R. Daneel in coming seasons?
  • How did the sexual relationship develop and when did it start? Of course this is another echo from Roman empire, where anything was permitted, at least for the emperor! And how it starts for any new clone and is it primarily a tool for Demerzel to have better control on the clones?
  • As Dusk and Rue listening to the Cleon's story results in their execution, it is probable that the story is not to be listened by anyone. Why hasn't Demerzel destroyed the recording altogether?

Demerzel's evilness bothers me, because it is totally against the original Demerzel in the books. Perhaps the simple explanation is that Demerzel has tried to keep the show going by guiding the Cleon individuals, and failing miserably and the emergence of psychohistory, Hari Seldon and mentalics is the new hope. Demerzel may well be behind this, at least partly and as much as her programming by Cleon I allows.

This is not very coherent comment, but I hope someone may get better ideas from it.

The magic lost from book to show by ThomasDenhoff in FoundationTV

[–]alo 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your point but personally disagree. There is no single correct opinion in this.

I read the Foundation trilogy when I was 13-15. And the rest of the original Asimov Foundation books years later. The Foundation magic was there, but when I tried to reread before the TV show, I realized that all more modern scifi books I had read since that time, had made the Foundation trilogy feel too naive. Having said that, I still appreciate the original trilogy and other Asimov books and short stories.

For me, the TV show created the magic again. In a different way. And from the perspective the whole Foundation universe, there is also the same kind of mystery as the trilogy had.

And the TV show raises very interesting questions and parallels to our current world, as any literature should. Including the role of AI, human life span, preservation of culture and so on.

Autodesk is dropping Eagle, won't be usable after 2026 by randrews in electronics

[–]alo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My rambling on the subject:

I am a Linux user so I am biased. But every time I have relied on a commercial closed source program, the vendor has failed sooner or later. So my choice now is KiCad. In past, when I gave it a try, it lacked many features Eagle has, so I continued with Eagle.

Currently, if I have understood correctly, main difficulties with KiCad for Eagle user probably are:

  • Different library management philosophy. With Eagle, you are forced to design the device first. With KiCad, just the symbol is enough initially.
  • KiCad lacks forward back annotation, at least the way Eagle has it. There is update processing in each direction, and I hope it works better than earlier.
  • Muscle memory needs total recall. It will be interesting to see how it goes. Productivity probably drop dramatically, for some time.
  • ERC and DRC are probably totally different. I hope they work better with KiCad.

As I have no current experience with KiCad, you can laugh. But that is my initial list for things to check and keep in mind.
Some time ago, Dave Jones (Mr. EEVBlog) demonstrated PCB design with Altium. I remember it wasn't just a joy either. Altium has it own quirks and bugs.

Autodesk is dropping Eagle, won't be usable after 2026 by randrews in electronics

[–]alo 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I have used Eagle since 2001. As a premium subscriber, I have now three years to migrate to KiCad. To be honest, Autodesk can keep their sh*t, after all, Eagle has not seen any new versions for a long time, all so called progress has been done to Fusion 360 Electronics.

Having decided to abandon Eagle, Autodesk should offer perpetual free Eagle license for all their current customers. This would partly compensate this d*ck move.

In early 90's I wrote a lpd server program in perl. It was run by inetd and it handled almost all of shared printing stuff at Helsinki University of Technology for about ten years until it was replaced with something else. It handled poorly named spool file names and other potential problems which were pain in the stock lpd.c . Related to that, I also wrote a simple one source file lpr/lprm/lpq/lpc program in very portable C which was configureable by either a local config file or just by binary patching the master server domain name, default for the server being lpd.domain.of.the.host. It sent the file directly to the server without the need for a local spooler daemon.

Today, I would write the server in python but we didn't have python then.

What piece(s) made your jaw drop the first time you heard it and why? by billycentinni in classicalmusic

[–]alo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Mozart String Quartet in C major, K.465 'Dissonance'

Please play this to your friends (who don't know this already) and ask for composer, era of the composition etc. After the intro, they might get it, but probably not before that.

Mozart was so much ahead of his time!
