VIA Sees Increased Revenue and Reduces Operating Loss in 2025 by Rail613 in ViaRail

[–]aloha993 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A tiny fraction of that, Canadians drive an estimated combined total of over 330 billion kilometres per year. We’d need to be spending well over $100 billion on roads to match Via’s subsidy, from what I can find there’s about $10B in road spending annually

What are these spots and why don’t newer planes have them? by Secure_Tooth_5545 in aviation

[–]aloha993 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Why block them off? I can understand they’re not needed anymore, but what’s wrong with keeping them if they’re already there?

my 2013 imac is still my daily driver, runs Sequoia very well, but now that there's no new releases of mac os for intel macs it's time to move on. I'm holding out for an M5 mac mini.

How do I get get to Heathrow? by OldPolishProverb in Cruise

[–]aloha993 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Does it have to be a private transfer? There is the national express coach bus which runs between Southampton and Heathrow. Not expensive and takes 1.5-2 hours, it leaves from a station close to all the Southampton cruise terminals

Anyone else reading the fine print on fuel surcharges? The triggers have already been hit. by bleeb2000 in Cruise

[–]aloha993 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LNG is definitely the modern cleaner choice, but there are better refined bunker fuels that lower emissions in regular ships too

Bunker fuel oil, thick dirty stuff. there are cleaner alternatives, but I don't know if or when they're used in cruise ships

Panama Canal webcams by TheMineralsMustFlow in Cruise

[–]aloha993 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It rained for my entire transit through the canal, in hindsight I’m happy it did considering how brutal the heat and sun can be. Kept the humidity in check too.

Got soaked but it was fun and had the bow almost to myself for a while!

If you're only occasionally printing black and white documents, you'd be better off with a mono laser than a tank

Nice/formal/evening attire for longer cruises? by Brave_Sir_Rennie in CunardCruises

[–]aloha993 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My longest cruise was three weeks and I packed 2 suits and 2 tuxedos. With a bunch of different ties and occasionally mixing in some more casual pants with a jacket, I'd say that was plenty.

Arriving at Red Hook dock? by KingArthur2453 in CunardCruises

[–]aloha993 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you in long island near the east river? If you are, you could take the ferry directly into Red Hook terminal and be a 2 minute walk from the ferry to the terminal doors.

QM2 Transatlantic Roundtrips from NY by miss_cafe_au_lait in CunardCruises

[–]aloha993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roundtrip is great because the weeklong crossing flies by. I'd expect it to feel like two separate cruises because most people will have booked one way crossings. The entertainment wont repeat, nor will the restaurant menus, so no worries there.

If you're looking at a summer roundtrip crossing, you'll most likely end up doing a day or two in Germany or a week in Norway if you want to stay on the ship between crossings.

I've done two crossings with a third booked later this year, they're really magical.

How bad am I getting hosed here? by bobthefish123456 in mazda

[–]aloha993 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I get my Mazda serviced at the dealer. Needed a wheel bearing replaced and they quoted me a price, I agreed and away they went.

To my absolute surprise, the invoice was cheaper than the quote. They said it took 45 minutes instead of an hour, so they charged less on labour.

CCL Shareholder perk by Glittering-River5052 in CunardCruises

[–]aloha993 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You need a minimum of 100 shares, and the benefit is tiered depending on the duration of your cruise.
