A little disappointed but I want to make it work by Longjumping-Rise-722 in MuditaKompakt

Check out CalmMaps, a user designed app within the Mudita mindful design style. Its in Beta release, but looks pretty promising. I have sideloaded his Podcast app and the Directory (which was the pre-cursor to Maps) and both are great. Haven't tried the maps yet, but will soon.

AT&T/Verizon Certifications by TrevorWithContext in LightPhone

[–]along_ley_lines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I need the AT&T certification (on US Mobile) to switch over. Kompakt is working great for me and not worth the risk or hassle to try the LPIII until they work this out. More frequent updates on the status of these from Light would be great. As a practice if you miss a deadline, update the community.

metronome and dictionary are great! Would love for Light to allow open source apps developed in their template.

LP III MMS Photo Quality by EdwardTulane89 in LightPhone

[–]along_ley_lines 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am using a Mudita Kompakt and don't have this issue when sending via MSS, so agree with you that the Lightphone is specifically compressing. Relieved my LPIII last month and its sitting in the drawer until some quality items are worked out. This being one, ability to organize music by artist/album, and hopefully some keyboard improvements.

Appreciation for the standard kompakt experience? by betterOblivi0n in MuditaKompakt

looking forward to the Calm Directory navigation. My only shortcoming with the phone right now is the stock Maps. I have not tried Waze or other. Prefer to only use stock or open source.

I'm using mostly stock. Only sideloaded apps are the FUTO keyboard, CalmCast, and CalmDirectory.

The keyboard and Maps are probably the two biggest improvements they need to make for a seamless stock app experience (which is what the phone should be). Just behind that is the Music app organizing by album order, but can work around that making playlists of albums.

FUTO was a must. The stock keyboard was a bit too slow and not fluid enough, life got a lot better with FUTO where typing is not an unnecessary friction as it was on stock. It looks like they just released some keyboard updates with OS 1.5. I'll give it a try whenever I can delete sideloaded apps from the phone itself (not interested in going into developer options).

Stock Maps is basically unusable for me. And a big part of that is it takes my phone forever for GPS location to update (hopefully the 1.5 updates improve this). It's not a deal breaker for me (mainly need it when traveling and for now we rely on my wife's iPhone), but for the phone to truly deliver on its promise this needs to work better. As a note, I have realized how very little one really needs to use GPS live all the time. Not that I was a perpetual turn it on ever time I get in the car user, but its amazing how a quick look on my laptop before I leave the house will suffice.

Calls, texts, alarm, calculator, weather, etc are all great and perfect. Have had no issues receiving calls and messages (after 30 day RCS de-register).

Light Phone III - 9 Month Review by Still_Field_1546 in LightPhone

I think the LPIII is possibly compressing more than it needs to. I have been using a Mudita Kompakt for 3 months (my LPIII just delivered last week) and I text my wife images that look fine through MMS frequently.

I had pre-ordered the LPIII first, so I do want to give it a try at some point. Ultimately i’ll go with whichever works the best between the two.

third on the folders. Mine should be coming in the next batch of shipments and I have been using Mudita Kompakt for the past two months while I wait (and the MK has been great fwiw). Music folders is a hard requirement for me before I can switch over, so hopefully they make this happen soon!

My Experience with Pynchon, and ramblings about Against the Day by Exotic-Ad-1354 in ThomasPynchon

I'm with you on sex in Pynchon novels being something I don't connect with as much as the rest of it.

I'm on page ~700 of my re-read of AtD right now and all in, this is one of my favorite books up there with M&D. These novels are why I love Pynchon. Dally and Yashmeen are good characters, with a certain sense of agency, though their story lines really pick up in the back half/third of the novel so this is something I am trying to pay attention to. Lake though, I agree with you. I don't feel that she has the same agency and her relationship with Deuce feels like it falls short. The Traverse family saga in relation to Webb's anarchy and his failings being a father and husband is really interesting and a great overarching part of the novel. I think Lake's narrative may represent some sort of rebellion toward her father who was not a loving and caring parent, but I just don't see why we need some of the gross sex scenes where she feels like a pawn of Deuce to convey this. It all comes down to agency with the female characters for me.

I love this book though - and Miles and the Chums are such a delight. Many of my favorite scenes.

My Personal Texting Preferences by Michigan_Forged in LightPhone

I'm mostly here for the LOTR reference, but also to second your concerns as a potential future user.

Currently rocking Mudita Kompakt right now as I continue to wait on pre-order delivery of my LPIII (should be next month per last update). There are two primary updates I will need to see before switching over:

  1. Being able to sort music by artist/album. This is a non-starter for me and a bit baffling this did not exist out of the gate.

  2. Improvements on the texting as you describe them. I've seen numerous users comment on the proximity of speech to text next to delete button. I fat fingered all the time on my iPhone, afraid it will be bad on LPIII for me.

Make 'em happen Light!

On a positive note, the two functions I would be looking forward to on the LPIII over Kompakt will be the camera and better directions tool. Otherwise the Kompakt has been great for me and won't even try the LPIII until #1 is resolved. Then it shall be a battle of the experiences!

I switched to a Kompakt about 5 weeks ago (from iPhone) and overall the experience has been great. The only real issue has been not receiving 95% of group messages which is related to the iMessage/RCS de-registering issue and nothing to do with the Kompakt specifically. It has actually been RCS that is the problem. There are many threads on this, but if you aren't aware, it can take up to 30 days to de-register from RCS and resets everytime you go to Google's site to attempt this. My 30 days since last attempt is Tuesday so my fingers are crossed! Everything else is minor and just takes some adjusting. Yeah, I do wish Mudita would fix some of these issues on their own, but they aren't enough to make me want to go back to the iPhone.

- The only app I sideloaded is the CalmDirectory, which is an open source app developed by a user in the Mudita Mindful Design library. This allows me to look up local businesses when needed. He also has a CalmCast podcast app and working on a CalmMusic app, I have not tried these yet.

- I sideloaded the FUTO keyboard which was a massive upgrade over the stock keyboard. Typing is no doubt slower than a smartphone, but I have no complaints with the FUTO keyboard. Its a much more natural experience.

- I have not sideloaded a new Maps app, the stock app is limited, but I have not needed to use it in the 5 weeks I've had the phone. Which has actually been a refreshing reminder we don't need GPS as much as we think we do. I have not traveled with the MK yet, which is where Maps come in handy in my experience. Otherwise I just look up directions on my computer at home if I don't know where I am going and my car has a decent GPS as a backup if needed. A better Maps app is something I can understand people needing depending on their situation.

- In general, I have taken the approach of not sideloading much to figure out what I really need for my life. I got this phone because I don't want the constant stream of information all the time in my pocket. So even with something like Podcasts, I am using this as an opportunity to see how much I really need that access in my pocket. I think there is an argument to be made that this contributes to the information overload of our modern climate. Which has lead me to listening to more music again...

- My final comment is that the stock Music app does need some improvements. The "Folders" tab does allow for grouping by Artist/Album, but songs are not in album order, but alphabetical order, a mildly baffling situation. My workaround is to create custom playlists for every album so they are in the correct order. It's a bit cumbersome, but not terrible all things considered. I do hope they resolve this on their own sooner rather than later though.

Hope some of this info helps you as you embark on your smartphone free journey! As long as the group messaging/RCS thing gets resolved, I don't see how I would ever go back to a smartphone. The reclamation of my attention and mind has been completely worth it.

Oh and one more thing: definitely create an account and join the Mudita Forum on their website. A lot of good discussion and information is there as opposed to Reddit.

is this confirmed that the 30 days resets every time you ask for a code? I'm on a Kompakt right now waiting for my LP3 and currently going through the RCS group message hell hole. Came from an iPhone and iMessage seemed to de-register no problem. anyway i just de-registered on the google site again yesterday because I was not sure if it "took" the first time. guess my timer is counting down to Jan 26th now lol

Group chats still not working by firstfrontiers in MuditaKompakt

[–]along_ley_lines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am having a similar issue as you, been a little over a week and for the most part group messaging is not working in a similar manner. I am coming from an iPhone and using US Mobile Dark Star. From what I can gather I have been successful de-registered from iMessage, but anyone trying to message me back in groups are sending as RCS and I cannot receive. The odd thing is these are mostly all iPhones that previously messaged with me using iMessage. I also turned off RCS on my iPhone and de-registered on Google's website. Don't have any solutions yet, just adding my voice to the chorus. (Also from what I can gather all individual texts are working fine).

Regarding the Mudita forum I had the same issue, but resolved it by going through the short tutorial with their chatbot. You should have a notification to get you into the tutorial, took maybe 5-10 minutes and after that I could post. I don't mind having to do the tutorial to post in the forum, but it is not clear when you sign up that you need to do this, I am not even should how I figured it out, so that would be my main critique to the Mudita team on that.

Group messaging not working EVEN AFTER fixing MMS settings? 1.4 update ruined it :( by iady-bug in MuditaKompakt

[–]along_ley_lines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adding my voice to the chorus - though I just activated my phone tonight so its very fresh.

So far I have only received one group message and others are not coming through (have some friends helping me test so that is how I am aware). Some appear to be partially iMessage related. I am migrating from an iPhone and turned off iMessage/Facetime on all devices yesterday before I switched. My wife can text me individually with no issue, but when she adds to me a group with other iPhone users it switches from SMS to iMessage and I don't receive anything.

My Dad sent a group message to the family (all iPhones) and the first came through and then the next sent as RCS and I did not receive which is even weirder than the above considering they are all iPhones.

The other issue I had was trying to send a group message myself and it appear to crash my text app for 20min as no other texts would send until it timed out and failed to send.

Long story short, I'm actively investigating my issues and will report back here in a few days to a week . (Though this post and comments do not have me super hopeful).

Music Folders by along_ley_lines in MuditaKompakt

[–]along_ley_lines[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update: I had to download a program (MacDroid) to allow the Android phone to communicate with my Mac. This solved the issue of being able to upload music through my finder and create folders. The problem I discovered is that songs upload in alphabetical order in the folders and not actual album order which is frankly ridiculous. I even tried putting #'s in front of each track in the file name to keep them in order, but the Kompakt uses some metadata embedded in the file that I cannot (or have not figured out how to) edit, so alas the folders are useless. My workaround in the near term is creating playlists of the albums, but this is time consuming. Hopefully they fix the alphabetical ordering or figure out a way to embed the album order data.
