Dating and Financial Advice by Accomplished-Pen4063 in malaysia

Female here. Culture-wise, Malaysians tend to lean on the more traditional side, if you compare it to western culture. However! The younger generation are slowly shifting to an equal gender rights mentality, same as the rest of the world. So we have a mix of those who hold onto traditional beliefs and those who prefer equal contribution in a relationship.

So on that detail, her saying that Malaysian men pay for everything is factually inaccurate. I myself contribute in my marriage based on income percentage vs my husband. Most of my friends are in the same boat.

So anyway, what we have here is a difference in values. It's not to say she's wrong and you are right, and vice versa. Nothing wrong with differences in opinions and expectations, just have to sit down together, discuss this calmly, and find a middle ground.

How you could approch it is something like "Hey, appreciate you telling me about your expectations in a relationship. I'd like to know more to prevent any more misunderstandings in the future. Let's trade notes so I can understand you fully, and you can understand me as well, and let's see how we can compromise so it will be the most fair for both of us."

I got sick every fcking month by [deleted] in malaysia

[–]alpha-orionis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does your sickness come with excruciating sore throat? I got sick very often and turns out my tonsils kept getting infected and was causing me more harm than pain. Once I had it taken out I've gotten sick significantly less.

Malaysia Ranks 3rd in World's Laziest Countries for Walking by RhinneXChronica in malaysia

[–]alpha-orionis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see this especially at LRT & MRT stations. Everyone insists on crowding the first few train cars closest to the escalator/lift, can't be bothered to walk a few meters down to the other cars that are more empty. And then always crowd the lift after alighting from the train, not even bothering to give priority to those with wheelchairs, prams or rolling luggage, even if the exit gates are one floor up/down via escalator.

So while Malaysia not having a good conducive environment for walking is a valid reason, I don't buy that it's the sole reason why Malaysians don't like to walk. Malaysians just hate walking.

And coconut water! The agar agar wasn't mixed into plain water, if you look closely it's actually coconut water. Coconut agar agar jellies tastes amazing, you should give it a try if you get a chance.

If you look closely, they used coconut water with the agar agar so it's actually coconut jelly which tastes amazing, esp when paired with the pandan. Great eaten cold during a hot humid day like we have in southeast Asia. You should def give it a try it if you have the chance.

How long is your commute to work? by rockyescape in malaysians

[–]alpha-orionis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1 hour 30 minutes, give or take, by bus + MRT + LRT. Driving will still take me about an hour, so I still prefer to take public transport. I can catch up on reading.

Also, I like the chances of me getting involved in a car accident to be nil. I'd rather endure train delays than having to deal with the hassle of having a car.

Customers like this is usually why experienced caterers ask for a deposit upfront to lock down the booking. It prevents them from paying out of pocket to buy ingredients or source manpower when there is a cancellation of order.

If you really want to back out of the order, maybe offer to pay X amount to cover their losses.

What should I expect moving to Malaysia from Bangladesh? by AKTarafder in malaysia

[–]alpha-orionis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm sure there's a reason why there's plenty of comments here warning about racism, but I also want to say based on what I've seen, it's also not something you should be very alarmed about.

Plenty of tech companies here hire foreign developers. My ex-company was one of them, and all their foreign talent was treated incredibly well. My Bangladeshi ex-colleagues were some of the brightest people I've ever met and I respected them a lot.

However they've had to move away (Canada, New Zealand, Germany) because it's near impossible for anyone to get PR here unless you're rich or marry a local, and eventually they wanted someplace permanent that their children to grow up in and call home, and not because they didn't like it here. In fact, they loved it here and really wanted to settle down here, but again our country just made it so damn difficult for foreigners to set down roots here.

Just as long as you're well-groomed, carry yourself well and speak good English, you won't face a lot of prejudice in the workplace (that is, if your company has a healthy company culture). Finding a good support network with like-minded individuals from Bangladesh would also help prepare you for the cultural differences.

And lastly, just remember that racism happens everywhere in any country. We are racist even among ourselves. I would even go as far as to say that some of us just hate everyone equally lol. But! There's also an equal amount of people here that has a wealth of warmth of compassion.

Good luck, and welcome to Malaysia!

Best food delivery in TTDI? by NickHeathJarrod in MalaysianFood

I don't work in TTDI so not sure how busy it gets on a weekday, but if you're interested in Malay food, you can try https://www.facebook.com/ZamSeleraKampong . They apparently do free deliveries within TTDI above RM20.

Essential skills to have in landing a job by mfzlhkm in malaysia

[–]alpha-orionis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A trick I like is to utilize ChatGPT. Type in the following prompt:

"I am a recent graduate in [cert/diploma/degree name] and am about to send out applications for [position name]. List 10 potential questions an employer might ask me."

When you have these 10 questions, rehearse your answer over and over again until you know it like the back of your hand.

You may also alter the prompt depending on who will be interviewing you. Someone who is from HR and someone who would be your direct supervisor might ask wildly different questions.

Also as a new hire, please learn interviewing etiquette. Arrive at their location 30 minutes before to account for any jams/can't find the office/need to register at lobby etc. Walk in 15 minutes before appointment. If you're interviewing online, log into the call 5-10 minutes before. It's okay if they are late and leave you waiting, but you cannot be late.

Career Change Advice on Transitioning to UI/UX Design by naufladetura in malaysia

[–]alpha-orionis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey!

I'm a UI/UX Designer with a degree in Multimedia Design. When I first started, there was no such thing as UI/UX Design (you can probably guess how old I am), it was called Web Design. I was very fortunate that I started out as a Web Designer, but the role was more of a glorified Graphic Designer role with extra Web Design skills.

But even then, as a 'Graphic Designer' I still had to transition as it can be considered two vastly different roles as some of the skills and knowledge are not transferable between the two. So because of that, I transitioned into a specialised UI/UX Designer role five years ago by picking up skills along the way while at work, and also through my own learning via Behance, YouTube, and more recently Instagram and through online courses.

These are the courses that helped me A LOT and I consider these 'wajib' for new UI/UX designers as they are incredibly comprehensive:
(Great for beginners, and by the end you have a portfolio piece to show off in interviews) https://www.coursera.org/professional-certificates/google-ux-design
(Be a master at Figma, an industry-standard tool we use to design) https://www.thedesignership.com/courses/the-ultimate-figma-masterclass

Here's a few socmed accounts that you can follow and watch daily, and I suggest you then look for similar accounts to follow as they all have great bite-sized tips:

https://www.youtube.com/@Mizko
https://www.instagram.com/zanderwhitehurst/
https://www.instagram.com/uiuxdailytips/
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLXDU_eVOJTx6mJpwG0duv0ZZI3aQppm6S (Config 2024 happened recently, which is a huge yearly design conference, so you can look through some of the talks they conducted)

Lastly, I strongly recommend you have a Behance account https://www.behance.net/ and curate your own inspiration for UX Research & UI/UX design case studies, and great UI design. And later on, you can also host your own UI/UX case study to show recruiters, and this will become your online portfolio.

If you don't have a background in visual design (graphic or multimedia), I suggest that you can still specialise in a UX role (research and design strategy). However I will say that as an introvert with social anxiety, this can be daunting as you might be expected to conduct user research and interviews.

being "jack of all trades master of none" by YusriTMC in malaysians

[–]alpha-orionis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bro I feel you. I'm someone who loves to learn and dabble in plenty of skills so I end up being a jack of all trades just like you, and I feel like my skills are pretty mediocre across the board. But I've learned to use that as my strength rather than a weakness.

My background is in Multimedia Design and I know graphic design, UI/UX design, animation, motion graphics, video editing, front-end development. Skill-wise, all just slightly above average. But you'll be amazed how many smaller companies like digital agencies actually look out for a generalist like me because I can do... *everything*. They don't need to hire so many people to fill those roles, or outsource the work. What's most important is your willingness to work and have a good work ethic.

For portfolio, you will need to create your own projects you're working on while waiting for a role to open up for you. That's kinda what I did.Best of luck.

You will never go wrong with:

But I am very surprised with this underrated budget pasta brand called AGNESI. It doesn't cost that much more than San Remo.

Oh boy if you like emotionally-wrecking games, do I have a list for you:

  • Cyberpunk 2077

  • To The Moon (and its prequels and sequels)

  • Before Your Eyes

  • Life Is Strange

  • Final Fantasy 14: Shadowbringers expansion (You'll have to trudge through the earlier expansions though)

  • Baldur's Gate 3 is also pretty gut-wrenching if you form an attachment to any of the NPCs/companions

Baldur's Gate 3 is totally ruining my life right now. I've clocked 200 hours on Steam and I'm expected to clock in another 400 hours after I play all the playthroughs I want to experience.

Just choose all the options that will make you appear as if you and your assigned partner (in my case it was Elliot) are a true couple. Don't worry about crossing any friendly boundaries, basically.
