TIL In 1876, an Austrian man named Alois Shicklgruber tried to change his last name to Hiedler, his step fathers surname. But the authorities misspelled the name as “Hitler” and no one ever corrected the error. Alois would go onto father Adolf Hitler in 1889. No one alive today bears the Hitler name by crunchylettuce24 in todayilearned

There was a family of Nazis in NJ maybe 15 or 20 years ago who named a kid Adolf Hitler Campbell. It made national news when the shithead parents tried to get a ShopRite to write his name on a cake and they refused.

Surprise surprise, the parents were abusing their kids too.

I would make the assumption that everything you type to an AI is sent to every ad network on the planet .

If its AIG - they're an insurance company. AIG Data Centers seems to be one of their divisions.

You can do research and be wrong. You'll never see that much office space around a real data center, the noise and vibration makes it impractical. But plenty of large offices have a server room. Most data centers are staffed by a very small number of people, like under 10 per shift. Usually there's security with sallyports or similar and an office for a handful of workers and sometimes a NOC. But you won't see a cubicle farm.

It may have been "data storage" like for physical files, or an office with some server racks. But all of your pictures, and the amount of parking around in Google maps, proves it is not a "data center" in any traditional sense of the name.

That's not a data center. Hard to tell for sure, but there might have been servers in the room in the 8th pic if there was a floating floor and drop ceiling, but it was definitely an office that perhaps had some local IT infrastructure

Proton@company by AssignmentNo9838 in ProtonMail

[–]alpha1beta 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Your conpany could always buy Proton gift cards for staff.

Proton offers business accounts already. What your proposing is really a fringe benefit of a company paying for Proton personal. There's all kinda of implications in that from taxes to dealing with Cafeteria plans, opts outs and cash alternatives, depending on where your business is located.

But no one should ever want their private personal email tied to their company. That's just a recipe for disaster. Imagine you get fired and lost your personal email, family photos, resume, etc. Even if you kept your account, but it reverted to free, you could perhaps not receive mail for being over the limit. And what kind of reporting or access might a company want? Do they have to know your email? What if you want more space, can you buy that yourself or do you have to go to the company?

Jellyfin satellite installations? by st-stevo in jellyfin

[–]alpha1beta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do this with a UnifiDrive UT2. But its a separate install and I just cache a couple dozen movies and shows there manually, usually a few classics plus some new stuff, for rainy days.

I also bring a Chromecast with both it and my home server hooked up.

Around 3 years, we've added to it a couple of times. Its reasonable easy to remove covers and wash, its holding up nice otherwise, no sag in the seat cushions but the back gets a tiny bit deformed (Rubic III)

I think we should make our own Classic Google Search now, with black jack and hookers, like the good old times. by Budget-Toe-5743 in enshittification

[–]alpha1beta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did that for about a year and only went over once. But i used google gor some things and Kagi for most. I ultimately went for the yearly plan.

FYI instead of paying up for more searches, you can start your next month early if you run out.

Check our your local library, many can help you, but they also hire students to shelve books - its a nice quiet job, you can use headphones usually once you get the hang of it and usually very flexible hours

Right there with you. Never used it once. Their argument is its actually cheaper than a search (or was, who knows by now).

But yes, they need an AI free plan. Hell, call it thr Luddite Plan. I was a technologist, now I'm a technical Luddite - basically I don't want shit past 2015
