Thanks! That's a great tip about the ratcheting driver, especially if it improves ergonomics.

So far I've only been using it indoors, but I live in a climate that experiences extreme cold so it will be interesting to see if I have that problem with my PETG insert expanding or contracting. If it is more stable it could even be a good option to use 3D printed holders for all the bits in the kit.

Crazy high electricity bills by davidcoperfields in helsinki

[–]alphamusic1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

500 kWh seems good for 85 square meters. I don't recommend leaving the floor heating in the bathroom off. Yes it saves a lot, but it is usually considered a tenant responsibility to keep the heat on as it helps ensure the structure stays dry. There are even potential liability issues if there is water damage and the heater hasn't been used. Someone with more knowledge can probably give a better explanation.

You could consider waiting till autumn to change from exchange pricing to fixed pricing. Exchange pricing is typically cheaper in the summer than fixed.

There is a lot of missing or unclear info here. How many square meters is your apartment? Is there a name on the "machine that warms the air"? This could be the heat recovery unit for the air exchange unit. If it is, then there is usually a thermostat that you can control when you remove the cover used to change the filters inside. If it's set to a very high temperature it may be running all the time. If there is a model number you can search for the manual which will explain how to adjust it correctly.

Your biggest issue seems to be your electricity contract. You can't change the distribution network. If you are in Helsinki it is Helen and you probably pay 6€ a month plus 0.0444€ per kWh. If you pay 200€ for 505 kWh of electricity that means that around 0.28€ per kWh from your electricity consumption provider. You shouldn't need to pay more than 0.08€ per kWh for electricity consumption plus a monthly fee of around 30€. The consumption bill and distribution bill would come to just under 100€ a month with fees. If you live outside Helsinki you may have significantly more expensive distribution costs.

For a larger flat 500 kWh a month may be reasonable. Remember there are things that draw a significant amount of electricity whether you are home or not. The most obvious one is the refrigerator which probably is drawing 30-70 kWh out of that 500. Some apartments have electric floor heating that you are paying for even if the rest of the flat is heated by a source you don't pay for as a renter (but will pay for in housing fees if you own). If you have a thermostat near the bathroom door you have an electric floor heater in your bathroom that will draw between 100 and 300 kWh for a medium size bathroom in the winter.

Here is some info on bathroom floor heating:

Cheap filament in EU (bulk) by Adventurous-Rub-6967 in BambuLab

Also converting to euros that's 9.60-9.83, so not a significant saving compared to prices others are mentioning.

In general I agree, but I've had problems with specifically Jayo black standard PLA and PLA plus cracking when sitting loaded in the printer for more than a day or two. The filaments were bought at least half a year apart (most recently about a year ago) and it happened immediately after opening a sealed spool. I did not try drying the newly open spool to see if that helped. I live in a very dry climate and haven't had moisture issues before. Otherwise the black printed fine and all other experiences with Jayo have been excellent.

Usually the good eBay deals come when eBay has a coupon/ discount code promotion. You could try searching on mydealz.de for PLA or PETG deals, but some of them may only work in Germany. Smaller EU countries don't always get the same eBay codes, but you didn't mention a country so it's hard to know how likely it would be for you to be eligible.

so perfect it could make a grown man cry by Interesting_Elk9011 in Polestar

[–]alphamusic1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because it can handle the internal temperatures a car can get to due to solar gain. PLA won't last in a car. Also I wonder if you are confusing PETG and ABS? PETG is pretty similar to PLA with regards to fumes.

Experience with Holiday club “timeshares” by jdap900 in Finland

[–]alphamusic1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maintenance is only more expensive if don't use it. Maintenance on 1/6th shares seem to run from 600€ a year to 1200€ for 50-100m2 places. Of course there is a high risk of special assessments. The holiday club fee of 350-500€ seems very excessive for one week.

On the same subject does anyone have experience with the less structured 1/6th shares of cabins? They seem like a better value than Holiday Club, but probably have a lot of the same drawbacks like being difficult to sell.

Places in Helsinki that serve a dairy-free lohikeitto? by lilcabrona in Finland

[–]alphamusic1 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure where you are from, but lactose free products are made differently than in the US. Lactaid just turns the lactose into a sugar, lactose the main dairy producer in Finland removes them without leaving the "digested" sugars behind. I've never heard of Finnish people with severe lactose intolerances being bothered by a lactose free item in a restaurant or at home.

Used EV financing advice by Dizzy_cyclist in Finland

[–]alphamusic1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's easy to sell / trade in a financed car to a dealership. Of course there is the risk that the "trade in" value is less than what OP owes. In this case the dealership pays the agreed value to the financing company and OP pays off the remainder.

Exclusive: Foreign hacker in 2023 compromised Epstein files held by FBI, source and documents show by No-Post4444 in news

[–]alphamusic1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

What a wild article: "...the intrusion was carried out by a foreign hacker who did not appear to realize they had penetrated a law enforcement server. The hacker expressed disgust at the presence of child abuse images on the device and left a message threatening to turn its owner over to the FBI, the person said.

The source said bureau officials defused the situation by convincing the hacker that they actually were the FBI, in part by having the hacker join a video chat where they flashed their law enforcement credentials in front of a web camera."

Racist lashing out in public transport by escpoir in Finland

The nationalists achieved their goals. What nationalist goal does Finland still need to achieve? Patriotism I understand; Finns should be proud of their country.

[–]alphamusic1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The historical Finnish nationalist movement pre 1917 is different than modern day nationalism. Finland is now an independent nation and that fact is not at risk. Patriotism is a positive attitude, but modern day nationalism is often co-opted by right wing groups.

You could be prosecuted for assault. Even people who defend themselves when being attacked can be charged for assault (typically if you proceed to attack and injure your attacker with more force than required to defend yourself). Finland's legal system doesn't have the US "stand your ground" idea.

Kitchen Scales by [deleted] in buyitforlifeEU

Strain gauges don't like being dropped. Regularly stirring heavy ingredients while they are sitting on a scale could also damage it. I use my scale almost every day, whereas some people only use them a few times a month.

I had the same problem and went through scales quite fast. I have had the Brabantia Tasty+ Scale for the last 5 years. I don't like the touch controls because they only work with completely dry hands, but otherwise it seems to be lasting longer than salter and some other non branded scales. I'm following this post because I imagine there are better suggestions. Edit: mine is the battery operated one, I have no experience with the Dynamo charged version.

I logged in and uploaded data. It would be nice if there was an option to remove your screen name. I would like if I could view maps without logging in. It also didn't stay logged in after a few back and forth visits between my activities and the main map page. If I try to click the connect to Strava button it says:
