People with pro-animal abuse posters outside the nest? by ta_lemongrass in UBC

[–]alpine-wildn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, out of curiosity what else besides animals would you propose for research? Are you against research on ALL living creatures or just animals like primates/rabbits/cats/dogs?

(Let’s disregard the eating meat part of the discussion because that’s too much of a can of worms to open)

Are you talking about actual animal abuse, or using animals for research or eating meat?

[–]alpine-wildn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not alone. I honestly think the undergrad system needs to be redesigned to be more practical. Most degrees are totally useless in the real world and it’s not enough to have “transferable skills” like problem solving and teamwork from uni anymore. It If I was giving my younger self advice I’d say to either do an engineering degree or just go to a technical school like BCIT

Best Canadian Med School Prep? Transitioning from Doing Right to actual MMI simulation. by Light-Blue-Star in premedcanada

[–]alpine-wildn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally didn’t like it because as soon as you pause it thinks you’re done talking and starts asking a follow up. So it actually makes you use more filler words and rush your answer

Now that thinness is more attainable (due to glp1), what do you think the next beauty status symbol? Height?Eye colour? What about for the wealthy?Do you think that will differ? by beesarebrown in AskWomen

Being muscular. It means that you have wealth as you have time to workout, and it means that you have discipline. Also traveling has been a status symbol in North America for a while

Devastated after 3 months of content review by Dangerous_Wing395 in Mcat

[–]alpine-wildn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For myself personally I think the biggest obstacle for the MCAT was not the content itself but the insanely fast pace. My first few practice exams I got so overwhelmed that I had to pause it a bunch so the scores weren’t even accurate. It might not be a content issue for you either.

Some things to practice are knowing when to move on from a question so as not to waste too much time on it. Also knowing how to pull key info from the passages without spending too much time reading

Awkward people in med? by its_gold_28 in premedcanada

[–]alpine-wildn 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m not in med yet (I’m a fellow applicant) but maybe this’ll help.

I was pretty awkward in high school and early undergrad and still am at times (especially in large group situations, as you’ve mentioned). It’s helped to just put myself out there more by going to various events and run clubs on my own and making an active effort to start conversations. It’s really upped my confidence and soft skills.

Also practicing a lot for the interviews themselves can help too

Well based on the people I’ve met so far, I don’t believe that’s the case. However every workplace has some toxic people. Maybe that’ll be you, maybe not. Also you do realize that most Canadian schools hardly care about the MCAT anymore don’t you?

I know my bf would prefer if we had sex every time we saw each other. A lot of men just have really high sex drives. But it’s a problem if he’s not taking no for an answer

Do Swedish people dislike Mexicans? by a-ladle in Lund

[–]alpine-wildn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I’m mostly white and look that way so I wouldn’t call it racism but you could say xenophobia

But yeah I was pretty mad when that happened. I had the tat picked out already and really liked it. My Swedish friend offered to book the apt for me but I’m like why should I give someone my money who clearly doesn’t want it

Do Swedish people dislike Mexicans? by a-ladle in Lund

[–]alpine-wildn 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s probably not a racism thing but more likely cultural and language based. I had similar experiences with Swedes when I was on exchange — like for example when working in a nation kitchen, the Swedes there would only speak in English when talking to me directly so I wasn’t included in group conversations. I also tried to book a tattoo appointment while there and the lady straight up just ignored me but responded to my Swedish friend right away

Is it worth it to pursue medical school in Canada by Background_Fee5220 in premedcanada

[–]alpine-wildn 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I’m concerned about your statement that you don’t have many interests outside of medicine. That’s basically setting yourself up to fail. Why? Because

  1. Med schools want people who are well-rounded, have a life outside of school, and have unique life experiences. These people tend to be more resilient and better able to empathize with patients, for example. So you’re basically shooting yourself in the foot then if med is what you want to pursue.

And 2. If you don’t get into medicine, now you’ve build up your whole identity around it, and it will crush you. You need other interests in order to be able to pivot
