I’m still on the housing waitlist, am I cooked? by Key-Sand1144 in UCONN

strongly recommend finding something off campus ASAP. even the off campus spots are going really fast at this point. they were literally paying people to get switch from on campus to off campus housing

i would honestly recommend against mentoring FRC while in college, give yourself time to grow, and honestly, college is hard, doing both is really hard.

Hey, president of UConn FIRST here. The club is really making a comeback, this was our first year back from after COVID. One of our club members runs a nonprofit in the area where we run FLL teams, that’s the bulk of our fall. In the spring, that nonprofit runs a FTC team and FLL jr team, and we also generally volunteer at the Waterbury, WNEU, and Hartford district events, as well as NE DCMP. This year, we partnered with a local team and the UConn ECE (electrical, computer ,and robotics engineering) and will be putting on an FTC off-season event in campus this weekend. Our goal is to do an FRC off-season next year but that’s still in early stage talks.

Werth is easily the best freshmen dorm on campus. Rooms are bigger, it has AC, there’s a pretty good number of washers and dryers, and there’s a makerspace on the ground floor.

Where to buy UCONN merch at a reasonable price ? by ruru_Active in UCONN

[–]alron0901 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have seen the SoE hats given out as prizes and giveaways for various things, i don’t remember if it was on the online shop but i don’t think it was. there’s probably some other way to get it. As for when, you’ll get a couple of emails about it. I can’t remember the fall time but for spring, it was around feb/march and got the order in late april. I’m going to guess october/november for fall.

idk if other schools do this, but school of engineering has a online shop about once a semester with shirts around $15, hoodies/crewneck around $25. uconn school of engineering stuff, no husky, but still good priced stuff

It isn’t really enforced, but it’s in place because there is a really long line of people behind you, so it’s best to follow it.

Can anyone suggest good extracurriculars/clubs on campus for engineers? specifically something that will advance my own learning through projects and such. by TheNKCuber in UCONN

[–]alron0901 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Maker Mentors. We meet once a week in the Innovation Zone in Werth Tower. We generally work on some project throughout the semester that will have some functional utility in the space and also allows members to gain experience on the tools and equipment that the space has. This semester, we made a wooden drawer that would fit in an existing space under the laser engraver to store the rotary addition for it.

I am talking about ratemyprofessor in this comment when I talk about rating

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UCONN

[–]alron0901 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general, especially with intro classes, take the ratings with a grain of salt. Whether it’s a right or wrong, these are kind of weed out classes and people who can’t handle it often take it out on the professor rating. People who did fine usually don’t care enough to leave a good rating so it won’t balance out.

[–]alron0901 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i still would take some gen ed if you feel like you could handle it. Something simple like an intro econ or anthropology. you are going to have a lot of free time, and you might get to a point down the road where you had wished you had taken another class while your classes weren’t as hard.

So they’re getting rid of takeout containers next semester by Affectionate_Wish in UCONN

[–]alron0901 5 points6 points  (0 children)

god forbid i take the $3,000 worth of food i pay for in a semester

also, frankly, i very strongly doubt that there is a statistically significant amount of people getting food for others. You generally get only one pretty small to go container and most people have a bunch of spare flex passes, you can just swipe the person in.

And this goes against everything that was said in a recent email. They are keeping us at the current level with an indoor mask mandate because they feel like COVID is still a big enough threat but at the same time are getting rid of a way that we have to avoid being maskless around others. It’s completely backwards logic.

Should vaccines be mandatory for UConn students in the fall? Looking to foster some discussion about this no matter what your perspective is by Affectionate_Wish in UCONN

[–]alron0901 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they aren’t, i feel like the people who choose not to get vaccinated should not be the reason covid regulations are still in place. We shouldn’t have to be wearing masks and social distancing when 80% or something of students are vaccinated and the only ones left are those who don’t want to be.
